Succotash Shut-In Epi213: Doin' It Down Under w/Jason McNamara

Hey there - it's your every-other-weekly host Marc Hershon here with Epi213 of Succotash Shut-In: The Soundcast Stimulus Package. But I am not manning this installment alone — I'm joined by a longtime friend of the show, Jason "Jabs" McNamara, all the way from Canberra, Australia! And this isn't the first time we're done this but it has been a LONG time — Jabs last co-hosted Succotash with me back in Epi40: Down Underin' with Jabs, in November of 2011, the very first year of the show.

Jabs used to be the ringmaster of a three-headed dog of a soundcast called The Dhead Factor (we talk about that in this episode), a show which has been on a VERY long hiatus. He also produced a comedy narrative soundcast from 2013, a limited series called Boganwood (which you can still catch over on Stitcher.) We also talk more about Boganwood during this episode if you want to find out more.

An avid runner, he's got a great wife and three kids in Canberra, the capital of Australia, where he holds down a day job working at a hospital. We're in farily regular communication so I thought I'd see if he wanted to grab several clips of some Aussie soundcasts and jump on the show to present them with me. Not only did we do it up in audio but, since we were on Zoom, we captured the "magic" (if one could call it that) and — for the first time ever — we will be simulsoundcasting an episode of Succotash! In audio form in all the usual places AND on YouTube!

The shows that Jabs picked out for us to feature clips from this episode include I Don't Know About That, Tony Martin's Sizzletown, The Betoota Weekly News Bulletin, and Unravel True Crime: Snowball. The last one isn't a comedy soundcast clip per se, it's the trailer for a bizarre true crime show that's so bonkers as to be very entertaining. This installment of the show is brought to you by Flying Jodhpurs from Henderson's Pants.

CLIPS

I Don't Know About That
If you've been wondering where Australian-born, American-transplanted, comedian Jim Jeffries has been since his Comedy Central commentary show shut down last year, this is it. He brings his special brand of non-knowledge to I Don't Know About That, where he's challenged by staffers Kelly Blackheart, Forrest Shaw, and Jack Hackett to figure out the ins and outs of various topics, only to then have a real loive authority on those topics come on to set him straight.

Aussie comedian Tony Martin is a longtime stable in his native land. Now he's plunged into the world of soundcasts with Sizzletown. Replete with offensive tweets, the frustration of COVID-19 lockdown, and rampant conspiracy theories, Tony is joined by folks like Niles Nyquist, Shane [REDACTED], Simon Haight, and The Pikelet Man — all calling in from their own bunkers.

Season 4 of Unravel, a true crime show from ABC in Australia. This is the trailer for a wild show that actually involves the show's host, Ollie Wards, because his brother gets conned by an American woman from California who bulks the family out of  giant sums of money.

I love the name of this soundcast so much! Hosted by Cadet Wendell Hussey, along with Errol and Clancy, The Betoota Weekly News Bulletin is a showcase of some of "the biggest stories" from The Betoota Advocate, Australia's oldest newspaper. (Jabs tells us that Betoota is actually a ghost town.)

I can't thank Jabs enough for co-hosting this episode with me — especially because we had to record it twice due to my Zoom ineptitude. Will his show, The Dhead Factor return? who's to say? Enjoy him here with me and hope for more.

Co-host Tyson Saner will be on hand with Episode 214 next week. (If you missed it, you can catch his episode 212 from last week here, where he features clips from Sincast, 16oz Cinema, and The Neighborhood Listen.

If you get a chance to get up to Apple Podcasts to rate and review our little soundcast in a favorable manner, you'll be our bestest friend. Or just give us a little word-of-mouth, which we call passing the Succotash.

Succotash Shut-In Epi211: Three Clips n' a Bonus Cut

Howdy hi there, friends and neighbors! As the man says, I am Marc Hershon, host of this episode of Succotash Shut-In, the Comedy Soundcast Stimulus Package. What does that mean? It means we’re bringing you clips from a variety of comedy soundcasts from around the web. Most new ones but sometimes old ones. Sometimes we’ll bring you interviews with soundcasters or comedians. Sometime we bring you special presentations of one sort of another.

When I say we bring you I’m not using the royal “we” there, no sir. I switch off hosting this dog-n-pony show with Tyson Saner just so we can crank these puppies out with maximum efficiency on a weekly bases/ Did you catch his most recent installment, Epi210? It’s a dandy, featuring clips from The Korey Epps Show, EXPcast : a video game podcast, and Wild Ride! with Steve-O. You can still get it from with our homesite, at SuccotashShow.com, as well as any of the many outlets that carry this show: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Play, PodBay, the Laughable app, and more.

But this week, for this show, I not only have a trio of clips, one of each from these fine and practically brand new programs: The Nateland Podcast, Literally with Rob Lowe, and Listen! Listen! Listen!, but I also have a trailer or a promo from a fun new show that starts at the end of this week PLUS a special comedy cut from comedian and friend of the show Dan St. Paul called COVID19 Baseball with Harry Caray.

In order to make sure we can bring you all of this fine entertainment, this episode is brought to you by our phony sponsors: Henderson’s Pants and Trumpoetry.com. We would like some actual advertisers so if you have something to seel or know someone with something to sell, won’t someone please write me at marc@succotashshow.com? I’ll tell you what’s what and you’ll see that buying a spot on this little powerhouse of a soundcast will surely bring in the people.

CLIPS

The Nateland Podcast

Soundcasting has claimed another comedian. Last week marked the launch of The Nateland Podcast, hosted by popular Nashville-based comic Nate Bargatze, who you may know from his standup, particularly from his Netflix special The Tennessee Kid. With comedy clubs currently being spotty at best as a place for comedians to hang their hats, Nate decided to get back into soundcasting – he was part of a show called It Could Be Better back in 2011 – and this time he has fellow Nashvillians Brian Bates and Aaron Weber with him. Our clip is from the debut episode, and has the guys talking about the best way to watch the Star Wars saga.

Listen! Listen! Listen!

I’m not sure who Curtis Elton is. There’s a Curtis Elton who is a piano-playing wunderkind from England but I don’t think the host of Listen! Listen! Listen! is him. THIS Curtis Elton talks at a breakneck speed for some very short episodes and, as the detail on Apply Podcasts puts it, there is no theme, and no useful information. But every episode is different so why not check it out? The shows are SO short that I’m not clipping Episode 26, the Independence Day Special…I’m playing the entire three minute run of the episode for you. Better strap in…

Literally! with Rob Lowe

You know the coronavirus is making everybody loopy after all this time when celebrities like Rob Lowe have decided that hosting his show has to be better than doing nothing other than huffing your own carbon dioxide in your breathing mask. It turns out that hes a pretty engaging host! Who knew?! Plus who better to reach out to A-list star friends from the jump. In his first episode, which just dropped a couple of weeks ago, Rob Zooms it up with Chris Pratt. You know – the guy who went from being a chunky dimwit on Parks & Rec to being a ripped dimwit as Starlord in Guardians of the Galaxy? In this clip they get into movies they thought were good without having seen them, bad sax solos, and bringing a powerful yes/no game.

COVID19 Baseball with Harry Carey

Normally I would have a fourth soundcast clip to pop in here but, instead, I got aspecial treat from a friend, comedian Dan St. Paul, who is based out of San Francisco. We’ve known each other since the beginning of time, I think, and when he sent me a bit that he’d been working on in HIS lockdown time, I asked if I could share it with you. For years, a staple in Dan’s act was a hilarious baseball announcer piece, The First Baseball Game Ever Played, based on the legendary Chicago Cubs announcer Harry Carey. Well, he’s updated the concept now, in a piece called “COVID19 Baseball with Harry Carey”.

That’s Dan St. Paul, who you can follow on social media @DanStPaul – that’s just “ST” for “Saint”, and on his homesite at http://DanStPaul.com

And that is going to do it for Epi211 of Succotash Shut-In. Tyson Saner is back with you next week in this very same feed, with Succotash Episode 212 and some fun new clips. Thanks for stopping by, hanging out, and being real. At least I assume you’re being real. If you’re not, please don’t bust the illusion. Speaking of busting illusions, I must come clean with you and let you know that when I am recording this show in the privacy of Studio M, my Mazda 3X, I am not wearing a mask. But the rest of the time, when I’m oout and about, I am masked up. I hope you are, too, especially when you’re passing the Succotash.

Succotash Shut-In Epi210: Sweatin' to the Clippies

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner, your host for this episode of Succotash Shut-In, the Soundcast Stimulus Package". Welcome. Next week, Marc Hershon has the hosting duties as well as last week's episode in which Mr. Hershon shared his SleeveTalkers soundcast pilot episode with you. I recommend listening to that episode if you haven't already.

This week I've got clips from The Korey Epps Show, EXPcast : a video game podcast, and Wild Ride! with Steve-O. This show also features fantastic fake advertising from our longtime fake sponsor Henderson's Pants Republican-Fit Jeans, and our more recently acquired 100% fake sponsor with the 100% real website TrumPoetry.com from which I will, of course, be reading a selection from.

Would you like to be a REAL sponsor of Succotash Shut-In? Contact marc@succotashshow.com and let's work something out! :) I am making a smiley face that you can't see, prompted by a typed version of a smiley face that you also cannot see…unless you are reading this…

CLIPS

The Korey Epps Show is hosted by none other than Korey Epps. Each week follow geeky events with your host as he talks all geek culture from movies, TV, gaming and more. Our clip is from Epi8, entitled "Lockdown", featuring guest Hunter Block, co-host of The Anti Social Show along with yours truly (and also a longtime friend of Succotash.) The featured clip has host and guest discussing how many celebrities are utilizing their stay-at-home time during the COVID-19 plague….

Join Stoy, Dan, Pat, and Josh as they sit down to talk about everything and anything video games; like the video games they've been playing, news, reviews, interviews, good conversation and fun! There's a lot going in their episode from May 26th - A rundown of all the online gaming events going on this summer, what each of the hosts is up to and an in-depth discussion about everybody's Most Memorable Video Game Mascots! The clip we're featuring has the crew discussing an alternate theory about COVID-19 and how it relates to a surge in console sales…

In his relatively new soundcast, comedian and jackass star Steve-O has hilarious and honest conversations with celebrities from his mobile podcast studio. This time around his guest is Bam Margera, (there's also a third person on the mic with them, but I'm not getting who it is…) and in our clip they discuss the very first season of the hit show that spawned their careers: Jackass!

BONUS LISTEN!
Recently I clipped a soundcast called Sensibly Cynical. Host Sean Pratten had me on as a guest recently to discuss "all things Jackass" and you can go to http://sensiblycynical.podbean.com to listen to it and, at this point in time, around 99-100 past episodes of Sensibly Cynical

All the relevant links can be found right up above and you can also find almost a decade of Succotash if you poke around on our homesite, SuccotashShow.com. I wrote these notes on the evening of the 4th of July, and I'm hoping everyone is being safe during this plague. Fireworks and barbecues are neat but only if you are alive to enjoy them. Remember, masks are not a sign of weakness…unless compassion for your fellow human is a weakness as many in power seem to believe these days. As someone pointed out eloquently, "I wear my mask to protect YOU and you wear your mask to protect ME". I think that's pretty straightforward. Wear a mask, socially distance, wash your hands, and don't be a garbage person.

Also, if you like this program and you'd like to show your support, rate and review it on iTunes or Apple Podcasts or whatever it's called now. You can also just tell people you know about us directly. Any way that you share us, we appreciate it. That is what we mean when we kindly ask you to Please… Pass The Succotash
