Succotash Epi319: Title Resonance

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner welcoming you to Epi319 of Succotash. And thank you for making us your destination for this period of listening that you are currently embarking upon. This show started 11+ years ago as a way to feature comedy people and their podcasts, which we here at Succotash have been calling "soundcasts" as a way to attempt to separate the medium from the dead format known as the iPod that it is named for.

As time went on, the soundcast proliferated in a way that is still quite surprising at times. More's the merrier, more for show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon and myself to choose to listen to, take snippets from, and ultimately present a few of them to you, the listener. If this is the first soundcast that you've ever listened to I'd like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for choosing us.

I've got 3 clips to share with you, but first: I'd like to point out that last week in Episode #318 of Succotash, Mr. Hershon brought you a quadrilogy of clips from soundcasts that contain comedy AND sports, namely Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson, Sportsfeld, The Grade Cricketer (that included guest commentary from our friend Jason "Jabs" McNamara (The DHead Factor, Boganwood) from Canberra, Australia), and View from the Cheap Seats. It is the first time in this show's history that it has featured an all-sports-related soundcast lineup, and I found it to be actually quite an interesting listen. You can find that episode in our show archive at www.succotashshow.com or pretty much wherever you might listen to soundcasts in your own personal future.

The clips I will be sharing with you this week are from the soundcasts called Jake Yapp presents: Not Today, Thank You, Strong Songs, and Trashy Trashy.
I feel like this episode is loaded with feminine energy, but I'm not sure that I am the best person to evaluate that. I will let the listener decide.

This episode is sponsored by Henderson's Pants new Pushover Pants, the perfect trouser for those who feel a mite unbalanced.

CLIPS

Jake Yapp Presents: Not Today, Thank You
A once-daily-now-occasional podcast featuring Jake Yapp, as seen and heard on Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe, Radio 4 and 6Music. Our clip hails from the episode that dropped on October 7th, 2020, with guest Ellen Rose entitled "Game Saves". Interestingly, there is no mention of Ms. Rose in the show description, nor is there any additional information about her…so I looked her up! According to a page on youtube.fandom.com/wiki/Icklenellierose she is listed as an "English YouTuber best known for being a host of Outside Xtra, as well as being a former host of Xbox On."

Strong Songs
Music: it's good. On each episode of Strong Songs, host Kirk Hamilton takes listeners inside a piece of music, breaking it down and figuring out what makes it work. This soundcast features the type of granular approach to music analysis that, as a lifelong music nerd, I appreciate a great deal. I took a clip from the August 11th, 2022, show entitled, "Help Me" by Joni Mitchell. (Host's note: I have listened to a few episodes of Strong Songs" and had been looking for an excuse to clip the show for our show. Thankfully, this episode I have clipped for you happened, and I could not resist the urge to clip this show any longer, as this is one of my all-time favorite songs!)

Trashy Trashy
I first featured a clip of Trashy Trashy's 3rd episode way back in August of 2020 and now, they have reached their 100th episode, and are steadily sailing ahead to their 200th, one would presume. Over the last 2 years, this soundcast has become one of my weekly regular listens that I try to make a point of getting to when it drops, usually on Monday of every week.

For those who have never heard it before, the description says: "A podcast for garbage people by garbage people. We cover trashy news stories.
Hosted by Cassandra Cardenes and Erika Curry.

This clip, featuring dog parks and their people, is from their episode 101, from August 8th of 2022, titled #NOTALLDRESSING - In which, its episode description is a repeat of the previously mentioned SHOW description. It also includes their social media links, and a series of links to all of the news stories they are sourcing for this particular episode, including the weekly inclusion of a "Dumpster Fire of the Week" story.

And that completes your journey through the selected bits of audio that other people took the time to commit to a more-or-less permanent format, that I have taken the time to commit to an additional more-or-less permanent format, that you have taken some of your time to listen to, and I am very grateful for that.

I am grateful for a great many things of late. I am grateful for the friends and family that I both have had and, through the recent nuptials of my brother, I now have. Or…I also have…now… Something like that. It was an amazing time seeing many people I had not for 20-30 years perhaps. It was amazing food and the ceremony was both very moving and succinct. I'm grateful that my parents were able to attend a marriage of their child, in their lifetime. I'm grateful for the furiously expanding amount of perspective that time and life has brung, and is bringing to me.

I can even say that I am grateful for the soundcast as a format. I don't know if any of my assorted audio content post-2002 would have even existed as it does had it not been for the soundcast. Much of it does directly because of the soundcast and because of other soundcasters sharing it with their listeners over the last significant portion of my life so far.

So, I can only close by saying "Thank you" to all involved, and to remind you that next week there will be something else for you to listen to: Epi320. It will most likely be hosted by Marc Hershon and will feature his interview with Christine Blackburn, friend of Succotash and host of the longer-running-than-our-show, Story Worthy, as well as the Story Smash soundcast game show, AND the brand new soundcast My Life in Three Songs!

So…if you enjoyed this, and somewhere out there in "The rest of YOUR life" - land someone should happen to ask you if you heard anything interesting or good lately, and we spring to mind…by all means tell them so. It's what we mean when we ask you to please pass the Succotash?

Succotash Epi318: 4 Good Sports

If this is your first time dropping in to listen to Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, welcome. If you’ve been this way before, welcome back! This is Episode, or “Epi” number 318 and I’m Marc Hershon, your guide for this week’s tour of comedy soundcast clips.

Not to be confused with your host for last week’s installment, Epi317. That would be Mr. Tyson Saner, a grand fellow in his own right. He presented a trio of soundcast clippage under the title “Reach Out and Clip Someone”. Those shows included The Greatest Song Ever Sung (Poorly)Mom Can't Cook!, and The Co-Founder. If you somehow missed the show last week, it’s still hanging around wherever you get your soundcasts. Places like Apple and/or Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Amazon Music, iHeart Radio, Audible and, after a long break while we were boycotting them for their programming decisions, Succotash is back on Spotify, baby! Plus, as always, you can grab any of this show’s past 11 and a half years’-worth of episodes at our homesite, SuccotashShow.com.

But that was then, this is now, so let me tell you what I have in store for you. Of all the comedy sub-genres – crime, movie reviews, TV show rewatches, the paranormal, etc. – one that has gotten very little play on this show over the years has been sports/comedy or comedy/sports. Not for a lack of content – there are thousands of soundcasts with a sports bent to them. The truth is that I’m just not much of a sports fan. Any sports. And although some of my favorite funny people host or are featured guests on these shows, when I’ve tried to listen I pretty much don’t know the details that they get into around whatever the sport happens to be.

To be totally transparent, no one has ever written in or called the Succotash and Runaway Truck Ramp Hotline at 1-818-921-7212 to request clips from sports-based soundcasts. Nor have any of those shows sent in their own clips to our direct Hightail upload site, at hightail.com/u/Succotash. So have I been remiss? Sure. I’ll take the hit on that but Succotash is a two-way street – or soundcasts, rather – and if you let us know what you like to hear, don’t hesitate to reach out!

No matter! Today’s the day we make it all up with a quartet of sport-oriented soundcast clips! You’ll be hearing from the likes of Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson, Sportsfeld, The Grade Cricketer, and The View from the Cheap Seats. I will confess right now that I won’t pretend to know the intricacies of what’s being bandied about in these clips but for you sports fans out there, you won’t need my help. And, if like me, YOU’RE not a big sports fan, just sit back and relax. This won’t take long. PLUS we have a commercial from our favorite and only long-running sponsor, Henderson’ Pants new Drifter Chinos. If you love the romance of the open road, look out: Henderson’t rag pickers are out there, looking to get into your pants!

CLIPS

Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson
Who would have figured soundcasting would be the next best stop for heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson? Who in their right mind would tell the champ “no”? Not me! No, sir, no way! I understand from some friends of Succotash who have been guests on both our shows that the title isn’t so much about boxing as it is about being enclosed in a studio with a former pro boxer and a lot of herb being partaken of with very little ventilation. Back in July Mike had Bill Maher as his guest and they tore it up about religion, Black Lives Matter, police brutality, and Marilyn Monroe. (Who’s coming at poor Marilyn Monroe after all these years? That would be Bill, of course…)

Sportsfeld
Here’s a clip where I am totally out of my depth. This is from Sportsfeld – “a sports podcast about nothing”, according to the show’s description on Apple Podcasts – and I think the hosts, Andrew Zuber and Jake Goldsbie are talking about soccer. Pretty sure. But the series in Canada they’re talking about was happening concurrently with a baseball series AND a hockey series. For this clip I purposefully left off whatever set-up there was, just to see if you’re as lost as I am…

The Grade Cricketer
This next clip may be a bit out of reach for listeners who are even die hard sports fans in North America. The show The Grade Cricketer and it’s about – you guessed it – cricket. To start with, I’d never heard of the term “grade cricket” and had to look it up. Here’s the definition on Wikipedia: “Grade cricket, also known as Premier Cricket is the name of the senior inter-club or district cricket competitions in each of the Australian states and territories.” There were originally three hosts of the show, all cricket writers in Australia: Sam Perry, Dave Edwards, and Ian Higgins. These lads have even written books about the topic, although I was sad to hear that Dave went his own way in 2020 to focus on other things.

Anyway, I could barely understand what they’re saying, let alone what their cricket references are about. So I reached out to an one of our oldest friends of the soundcasts: Jabs (Jason McNamara) of the old DHead Factor soundcast down in Canberra, Australia to give me his thoughts on The Grade Cricketer. Thanks, Jabs!

View from The Cheap Seats
Our final clip is from a show by a couple of guys I’ve met peripherally, years ago, at the Los Angeles Podcast Festival. We’ve featured them before from the great soundcast they do along with Daniel Van Kirk called Dumb People Town. I’m talking about the Sklar Brothers, Randy and Jason. These guys are totally into sports and they get to let it shine nowadays in their other soundcast called View from the Cheap Seats. In this clip they’re talking about MVPs and champinoships and other things I don’t get, along with their guest – another friend of Succotash – the great Wayne Federman.

That’s going to do it for our sports clip-related show. If you’re a sports fan I hope I didn’t ruin it for you, but I just don’t get it. Or them. I’m a nerd, and a dweeb, and I prefer a good game of Dungeons & Dragons to watching the Super Bowl. But I recognize the importance of sports in our international zeitgeist so please enjoy.

Listener, you are always welcome to send email into either me, at m-a-r-c@SuccotashShow.com OR Tyson Saner at t-y-s-o-n@SuccotashShow.com

Jump into this feed next week for Epi319 when Tyson  returns with more soundcastic wonderfulness. If you’re looking for more entertainments, I do an editorial cartoon for the Half Moon Bay Review weekly newspaper which you can find online at http://hmbreview.com and just click on the Opinion section in the pulldown menu.

Other than that, if you find yourself pushing a cart down the aisle in your neighborhood grocery store and a kindly senior citizen is heading your way from the other end of the aisle and stops you to ask, “Have you heard anything good lately?”, won’t you please pass the Succotash?

Succotash Epi317: Reach Out And Clip Someone

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner, your host for this episode of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, a soundcast that invented the word "soundcast" which is, sadly, still what most people refer to "podcasts" as…which is also what THIS is, as anybody who has listened to this program over its last 11 years already knows.

Last week, in Epi316, show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon brought you an interview with Blaine Capatch who, in addition to being a standup comedian, is also a writer, a sketch performer, a husband, a father, a son, and a man who plays a druid character on the soundcast Nerd Poker, which has been featured on Succotash quite a few times over the years. It's a pretty fun episode and I recommend that you check it out at your earliest convenience.

You can find that episode and every episode of Succotash in the show archives over at www.succotashshow.com

This week, in an episode entitled, "Reach Out And Clip Someone", I've got three clips for you from the soundcasts known as The Greatest Song Ever Sung (Poorly), Mom Can't Cook! A DCOM Podcast, and The Co-Founder.

This episode is brought to you by our 100% fake sponsor "Henderson's Pants"  and their new Passive Aggressive Pants, for when you just can't take it any more…but don't want anyone to know for sure.

CLIPS

The Greatest Song Ever Sung (Poorly)
From the show detail: "The podcast that takes karaoke exactly as seriously as it should be taken." Hosts Adam Wainwright and Ed Cunard discuss an aspect of karaoke or music, and play a short round of trivia on that topic, where one of them challenges the other with five questions related to the topic, along with an Impossible Bonus question. Then they're joined by someone with a connection to that topic—and feature that guest singing karaoke (when possible…) Our clip springs from a recent episode drop on July 27th, 2022: "Who Knows What Evil Lurks in the Heart of Karaoke Singers: The Villains of Karaoke with Tiana Hennings (of the Next Door Villain soundcast). She has her own karaoke villain up her sleeve, but also some great stories about singing karaoke in China while studying abroad, what karaoke is like for the more casual karaoke fan, and how it’s a great way to get out into a new place you’re living and meet people.

Mom Can't Cook! (A DCOM Podcast)
Join hosts Luke Westaway and Andy Farrant for their brand new podcast Mom Can’t Cook! in which they attempt to salvage something, anything from the fact that they’ve watched every single Disney Channel Original Movie from the late 90s and early 2000s. The title of their show comes from the premise that the mom character in the film is usually unable to cook, and this is considered richly comic. Our featured clip comes from their recently released premier episode "Smart House", from July 18th of this year. (The plot of this epic tale is that a young boy wins an intelligent house of the future, which starts off by stealing some of his blood, and then things go downhill from there.) The clip takes from the hosts' discussion of the capabilities of the "Smart House".

The Co-Founder
Starring Sunita Mani and Alexandra Shipp, two young start-up founders, both women of color, are on the brink of losing their company; a fate they narrowly avoid thanks to a hairbrained scheme to have their neighborhood barista— a white dude, of course— pretend to be the third founder in order to raise money. But when the barista reveals he has a scheme of his own to keep the company in his clutches, hijinks and hilarity ensue. The Co-Founder is a Realm production, starring Sunita Mani and Alexandra Shipp, and written by Alexis Wilkinson, Alexa Wejko, and Mimi Mondal.

Which brings us neatly to the end of the show that I put together for you, the listener. I do hope something in the program caught your attention and perhaps has carved out a niche in your time for another listen. I also hope you listen to us in the future should you continue to have niches in your schedule freely available to you that you would share with us.

I spoke earlier in the program about spending a little more time with some people that life, in the fashion in which my particular existence seems to be unfolding, has separated me from, and they from me. It seems to be the way of things. I bring it up because this coming weekend which will be the 20th and 21st of August, 2022, my brother is getting married. It's a pretty amazing time all around this year. Weddings have always given me a boost of optimism and this one does especially because I am so close to the people in question.

That's pretty much how it works…the life experiences that are subjective to one's own particular perspective.
I don't know anything about you, but when you have hope, I am happy for you. It might seem hard to find hope, but it is there to be had if you are open to it.

That all being said, I hope that you feel compelled to tell others of our existence. You'd be doing us a really big favor. It's what we are referring to when we ask you to "Please pass the Succotash."

Succotash Epi316 - Special Guest: Blaine Capatch

Thank you, Bill Heywatt! And greetings, honored soundcast listener! I am Marc Hershon, your every-other-weekly host, creator, and executive producer of this here Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. Special thanks to my erudite and unflappable alternating host of this show, Tyson Saner. Those who follow this show closely enough – is that you? – might have noticed that we missed dropping an episode a couple weeks ago, then Tyson picked up the slack last week with Epi315, which should have been my episode the preceding week. Following so far?

Well, here’s what happened. I was traveling for business. Not Succotash business but my day-job business, and I was clipping soundcasts while I was on the road. Listening to shows on planes, editing them in my hotel room,a nd trying to get it all together. Then I got “Delta shitty hand” – our keen-eared listener heard what I did there – and I had a flight cancel on the last leg before home. Not just before home, but before I could return to the Nerd Nest and my precious soundcasting equipment.

Short story long, I couldn’t get ‘er done in time to make it worth dropping for that week. It was going to be a show devoted to comedy sports soundcasts so I had to shelve that for a future show. And Tyson, bless his heart, reshuffled the show numbers so that in the box score that is the Succotash archives, no one will ever know that I screwed up. And now I owe my colleague one. Cash it in anytime, Tyson!

If you happened to miss episode 315, entitled “the 3-Clip Tango”, Tyson featured snippets from a trio of comedy soundcasts which included The Winnebago BoysOxventure - A Dungeons & Dragons Podcast, and The Todd Glass Show. It was really a lovely roundup and I’d urge you to jump back a week in our feed and grab yourself an earful. Access that episode from your favorite soundcast dispensary, including – and I’m going to give you a pretty complete rundown here: Apple and Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, Audible, the Android app, Audacy, Blogger, Facebook, Gaana – not even sure what that is, iHeart Radio, the iPhone app, LinkedIn, Player.fm, PodBay, Pod Chaser, Radio Public, Soundcloud, Youtube, and now, after a lengthy boycott but now all is forgiven, back on Spotify. And, of course, every episode we’ve churned out over the last 11 and a half years can be scooped up in our archives at our homesite: SuccotashShow.com

So now that I’m finally back in the saddle, what do I have in store for you for Episode 316, you might ask? Well, my sports comedy soundcast show I might do next time but for THIS week, as teased by Tyson at the end of the last episode, I have a Succotash Chat in store with none other than Blaine Capatch! Blaine is a standup comedian but oh, so much more. He’s a writer, a sketch performer, a husband, a father, a son, and a druid. Well, he plays a druid on a soundcast we’ve featured here a few times over the years: Brian Posehn’s Nerd Poker, a wonderfully funny and occasionally insane show where Brian, Blaine, and a clutch of other pals play Dungeons & Dragons.

Before we get to the convo, I thought I’d set the stage a bit by playing a clip — since that’s our main stock-in-trade here — from Nerd Poker and last week’s action-packed episode. Beside Blaine and Brian, the rest of the cast includes Ken Daly, Sarah Guzzardo, Chris Tallman, dungeon Master Dan Telfer, and engineer Sam Kieffer.

If you are unfamiliar with RPGs, that’s Role Playing Games, and particularly Dungeons & Dragons, I can’t help you. Well, I probably could – I’ve been playing since 1979 – but we just don’t have the time. Blaine’s and my acquaintanceship…acquantancy?… acquaintedness?… oes back a few decades to the San Francisco comedy scene which we talk about in our chat.

All right. Without further ado, here is my chat with our special guest Blaine Capatch!

Thanks to Blaine for jumping on the Zoomer with me for that. I would love to have the whole cast of Nerd Poker make their way in front of the Succotash microphones one of these days. Maybe I should Dungeon Master a game and invite them all to play! That could be cool and incredibly terrifying!

One of the fun things their show features every week is, right after Dan Telfer thanks a bunch of their Patreon supporters, Blaine does a commercial from a variety of fake sponsors. Very much in the vein of our Henderson’s Pants spots, but the advertisers are all different. Just to give you a sample, I went into their archives and slices out five different little ads he’s read, and they sound a little like – no, actually, exactly like this…

Blaine also makes funny, occasionally outrageous quips in real life, which you can can catch via his socials through his homogenous handles @BlaineCapatch on both Twitter and Instagram. In addition to NerdPoker.com, he’s frequently a judge for Story Smash, the storytelling game show that’s a spinoff of the Story Worthy soundcast from friend-of-the-show Christine Blackburn And, as he mentions look for him performing around LA in Lucha VaVOOM!, the burlesque and Mexican wrestling spectacular.

Episode 316 is now officially over except for the outro and closing credits from Mr. Heywatt. Thanks again to our special guest this week, Blaine Capatch. Subscribe to us from any of your favorite places and Tyson Saner will be heading your way in this same feed next week with Epi317.

My latest review in Vulture.com this Month in Comedy Podcasts, featuring Nikki Glaser guesting on Marc Maron’s WTF is still up – there’s a link to it up in the blog entry for this week’s episode at our homesite SuccotashShow.com. And, other than that, if you happen to find a runaway dog wandering the streets and it seems friendly and you pick it up and read the ID tag and it reads, “Have you heard anything good lately?”, won’t you please pass the Succotash?

Succotash Epi315: The 3-Clip Tango

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner welcoming you to Epi315 of Succotash, the soundcast that might just introduce you to your next favorite soundcast…as long as you understand that "soundcast" is what we here have been calling "podcasts" since waaaaay back in the day, shortly after Succotash launched some 11 years ago.

There is also an excellent chance that we have already introduced you to your current favorite soundcast. Perhaps it was something that you heard in last week's Episode #314 in which I brought you clips from the soundcasts Black Aesthetic, Jeremiah Wonders, and Real Life Sci-Fi. Perhaps not, It's difficult to say. One thing that isn't difficult to say, by the way is thank you for listening which is essentially what I am doing right now in the guise of merely telling you about it.…or…is that the lazy explanation? I D K .

This week, I've got another round of the "3-clip tango" for you in the form of content bites from the soundcasts known as The Winnebago Boys, Oxventure - A Dungeons & Dragons Podcast, and The Todd Glass Show.

I've also got an ad from our longtime, 100% FAKE sponsor "Henderson's Pants" and their disturbingly anthropomorphic Pet Pants for you to enjoy as you indeed might…so look forward to that.

Alright, I've got very little time to do this, so let's get to the clips…

CLIPS

The Winnebago Boys
Evan Vest and Eian Webre are The Winnebago Boys and our snippet is from May of last year, an episode entitled "Many Gods". Evan apologizes - "We're back. My bad. Had a rough spell but we're back. Eian is now a permanent host." The clip itself features a very serious discussion of comedy and some of its' many aspects…

Oxventure - A Dungeons & Dragons Podcast
The Oxventurers Guild presents a DnD real play podcast! Join Johnny Chiodini, Jane Douglas,
Andy Farrant, Mike Channell, Ellen Rose and Luke Westaway for chit-chat and chaotic good times. Our clip is from back around the corner - July 22, 2022 - in an episode called "Wedded Redemption Part 1" with special guest player Harry McEntireand Happy Episode 100!
This clip features part of the introductory portion of the campaign the group is about to embark upon.

The Todd Glass Show
Todd Glass has his very own show! He brings on his funny friends and they talk about whatever they want.
And, of course, there are bits! Our clip hails from February 21, 2020, just between the COVID lockdown would sweep in a month later. Featuring guests Nick Swardson & Blake Wexler, although our clip only features Nick and Todd as Nick recalls doing live events with Adam Sandler and others…and an at-this-point-in-time very much living Norm Macdonald is fondly remembered.

Hey, we all made it to the end together. That idea puts an image in my head of a group photo of a large number of people posing with a single trophy that they all must share.…(storybook voice) "and that was the last time that trophy was ever seen in one piece again…"

Be sure to listen here, or wherever you listen, to Epi316 which will be hosted by show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon — who managed to secure an interview with Blaine Capatch of the world-famous soundcast Nerd Poker. I will be looking forward to it as much as you no doubt are at this very moment, assuming this is the first moment you have learned of this.

If all goes well, I should be back with an episode for you a week after that featuring…I haven't the faintest clue yet as I am still writing this. Thank you for listening, Be Decent to Each Other, Avoid COVID-19 and DEFINITELY avoid spreading it to other people if you can at the very least manage that,…what you could spread, however, is this show by sharing your awareness of it with other people. It's what we mean when we drop to our knees with our hands clasped together and implore you to Please…Pass The Succotash!

— Tyson Saner
