Succotash Epi285: The Last 4 Clips of 2021

For the final time in 2021, dear listener, hello from me, your every-other-weekly host Marc Hershon. Since you downloaded or are streaming this, you’re probably not surprised that you are listening to Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, and this is Episode 285, our last installment of the year.

Did you miss last week’s penultimate episode of the year, #284? With our co-host Tyson Saner? It’s not too late to flag it down and shove it into your ears. He featured a quartet of clippery from such soundcasts as Web CrawlersTriple ClickNo Dogs in Space, and How Did This Get Made? You can grab it from any number of popular podcast download and streaming destinations, including Apple & Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Amazon Music, Soundcloud, the Audible app, YouTube or our favorite haunt – namely, this show’s homesite – SuccotashShow.com

I was thinking of doing some kind of countdown for this year-end episode but having already contributed to Vulture.com’s This Year in Comedy Podcasts countdown reviews – you can read my write-up on Smartless, which came in at No. 9 – I feel like I’ve already slogged through a bunch of shows. Instead, I’ve plucked four clips from shows that really don’t have much to do with one another. They’re not all even necessarily comedy soundcasts but they are entertaining as hell. And I don’t believe we’ve ever featured any of them before. Hang on for samplings from Film Threat, Hysteria, Majoring in Everything, and You’re Wrong About. Our last show of the year is appropriately sponsored by Henderson’s Pants timely Auld Lang Slacks.

Reflecting back on the year – the second year in which the COVID pandemic has become a regular participant in everyone’s lives, either directly or indirectly – I’m curious to see if we here at Succotash - Tyson, Bill Heywatt, Joe Paulino, and the rest of the staff that keep this dreadnought trundling along – should be looking to change anything to increase the interest in or the enjoyment of the show. COVID kicked us in the rear and got us to finally make Succotash a regular weekly show, dropping pretty much every Tuesday. And although we’re still describing ourselves as “the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast”, both Tyson and I have wandered a bit afield from that in our choice of clips to feature. The shows are roughly a half-hour now, except when there’s an interview, which tends to go a bit longer. And we’re still sponsor-free, with the exception of our fake benefactor, Henderson’s Pants.

So what do YOU think? Are you happy with what you’re getting for free here? Do you want more clips per show? Less clips? More interviews? More commercials (yeah, right!) We also have a Patreon page waiting in the wings that you would be able to get some kind of bonus content and also help to support the show – should we fire that up? Do you want Succotash merch? Personal appearances? Our ATM PIN numbers? Just let us know. You can email either of us at marc@SuccotashShow.com or tyson@SuccotashShow.com. You can ping us on the socials @SuccotashShow on both Twitter and Instagram. Or you can call the Succotash Show & Runaway Truck Ramp Hotline, at 1-818-921-7212. However you want to reach out, we’d love to hear what you think of the show as we head for our 11th year of soundcasting, and how we can make things better or, at least, different.

Okay. ‘Nuff said, Let’s launch into this Farewell to 2021 passel of clips, shall we?

CLIPS

Film Threat
The first clip comes from a show hosted by an old friend of Succotash, Chris Gore. He used to host a show called PodCRASH, in which he featured himself guesting on other people’s soundcasts that he would turn around and play on HIS show. But Chris’s first love was as the publisher and editor of Film Threat magazine years ago, a great alternative look at movies and the film business, which went through a number of ups and downs and it went out of publication but Chris then resurrected it as a website and soundcast. Our clip comes from the Film Threat episode that dropped last week on December 20, in which Chris and his guests discussed Isolation, an anthology of nine tales of terror focused on people in isolation as they attempt to survive a deadly global outbreak. Sound familiar? Chris’ guests are filmmakers Nathan Crooker and Larry Fessenden and, in this clip, they talk about how the project came about and how they started putting it together.

Hysteria
The next show I also clipped from last week – an episode of Hysteria, with co-hosts Erin Ryan and Alyssa Mastromonaco. Erin is a political commentator and comedy writer, while Alyssa is a formar White House Deputy Chief of Staff. The description of the show on their homesite says that they are joined by a “bicoastal squad of funny, opinionated women to talk through everything from reproductive rights to romcoms.” Last week, in their episode entitled, “Love Me, It’s Christmas!”, the hosts teamed up with comedian/actress/writer Naomi Ekperigin, and comedian Megan Gailey to delve into “all of the wonderful, insane, problematic, magical, batshit holiday movie tropes.” The clip has them sifting through the Lifetime holiday move, The Christmas Setup, a love story featuring two gay male characters (played by a real-life gay male couple), and a movie mom portrayed by Fran Drescher.  There’s a taste of Hysteria, which you can find pretty much everywhere soundcasts are found. You can also find your way to their homesite by clicking through to our homesite, SuccotashShow.com, and then finding and clicking on the Hysteria title in our blog post for this episode.

Majoring In Everything
Are you one of those people who probably doing TOO many things in your life and having trouble focusing on how to put everything in perspective? Andrea Jones-Rooy not only has a Ph.D. after her name but she is also the host of Majoring In Everything, a soundcast that is “for people who don’t know what to do with their lives because they are interested in too many thing, and especially things that seem unrelated,” according to the show’s descriptor. Her guest in the show’s third episode, which dropped a couple of weeks ago, entitled “How science and stories will save the world, featuring Dr. Moiya McTier!” She is described as an astrophysicist, folklorist, science communicator, and all-around hero. In our clip, Dr. McTier talks about how she like to trick people into learning, and how to teach yourself in sort of the same way.

You’re Wrong About
Journalist Sarah Marshall has an obsession with the past. Particularly those events and people in that past that have gotten kind of a raw deal as far as how people think about them nowadays. So she like to deep dive her way into those topics with a guest and try to see if there a straighter story to be told. Most recently, in an episode of her soundcast, You’re Wrong About, entitled “Winter Book Club: The Amityville Horror with Jamie Loftus”, Sarah tells her guest host, Loftus (who is also soundcasting on Aack Cast, The Bechdel Cast, and My Year in Mensa) about The Amityville Horror. Is it a haunted or just big and drafty? And how the tale is a Christmas story! Our clip gets into how the book differs from the movie and how that can make quite a difference.

That metallic squealing you can imagine I’m hearing right now is me scraping the bottom of the barrel because I’m out of clips. And just like that, the ball drops for this most recent year of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. As long as you’re probably putting the finishing touches on your New Year’s Resolution, why not pop a note in there to download and listen to this show each and every week of 2022? Heck, go one step further and vow that you’re going to rate and review Succotash on Apple and Google Soundcasts. Why not? It’s free! It’s fun! And I’m begging!

Much like I’m begging you to check back in this very same feed next week for Succotash Epi286 when Tyson Saner returns with some more tasty soundcasts tidbits for you in the just-born new year. Do it to it. As the executive producer of this endeavor, I want to give a great big thanks to Tyson for being on this journey with me. We’re not making any money off this project and I greatly appreciate him putting in so much time and effort to craft his episodes.

Dear listener, I am wishing you a happy, safe, and reasonably sane 2022. With the Omicron variant raging right now, please take extra care during those New Year’s Eve shindigs. Mask up, vaxx up, and treat people better than you have in the previous year. And, just in case anyone should have to ask you if you have heard anything good lately, won’t you please pass the Succotash?

Succotash Epi284: Clip The Halls

Saluton, estas mi, Tyson Saner. I am your host for the celebration of holiday festivities that is this Christmas-week episode of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, that numbers 284…

Ho-Ho-Holy crap, has it been a rough year! If you listened to last week's Epi283, you will have heard that episode's host Marc Hershon echo that sentiment in a non-verbatim fashion. If you listened to that entire episode you would have the memory of enjoying the "Chats" installment Mr. Hershon delivered to you. His guests in that episode were none other than Dr. London Smith and Cameron Clark of The Jock Doc Podcast. It's a great episode and I urge you check it out if you hadn't already.

I've got clips for you for this episode. FOUR to be precise. They are from the soundcasts Web Crawlers, Triple Click, No Dogs in Space, and How Did This Get Made? I've also got a Succotash Holiday Classic of a Henderson's Pants ad for you in this episode that will drop the week of Christmas so…'tis the season and all that.

Me, I'm rediscovering my enjoyment the holiday season in a whole new context since having a child. He has holiday enthusiasm, and it is infectious to me. I never hated Christmas exactly…but my enthusiasm for it had waned until recent years. Funny thing, that.…

Well, 4 clips means plus or minus 25% more show, so let's get to it…

CLIPS

Web Crawlers
Comedians Ali Segel and Melissa Stetten kick around unsolved mysteries, creepy cults, paranormal experiences and everything in between. Our clip is from a few weeks back (12/2/21), "Real Housewives of Crime", where they discuss some of the biggest crimes involving cast members from the Real Housewives franchise, and we catch the beginning of their deep dive into Jen Shah's telemarketing scheme. Beware of mild spoilers for the "real housewives of…" I'm going to say, "Utah"?

Triple Click
Part of the Maximum Fun stable of soundcasts, Triple Click features video game experts Kirk Hamilton, Maddy Myers, and Jason Schreier blasting through the fascinating world of games, from news and culture, and answering listener questions, to debating the pros and cons of the biggest new games, and replaying old classics together. We've taken a clip from their episode that dropped on November 11th of this year, entitled "Skyrim Turns Ten", during which Maddy and Kirk share their initial reactions to Skyrim.

No Dogs in Space
No Dogs In Space is a music history podcast, featuring Marcus Parks and Carolina Hidalgo of the Last Podcast Network. Our clips throws back to July of last year (2020), and their interview with Allan Arkush, the director of Rock N Roll High School, where he talks about how the movie evolved from what was going tobe called Disco High.

How Did This Get Made?
Ever seen a movie so bad that it's amazing? Hosts Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas won't just talk about it - they'll watch it with their funniest friends, and report back with the results. They've been doing it for years, as proven by the fact that our clip comes from an episode of HDTGM? from January of 2014,  which was then re-released in December of this year (2021). It was a Matinee Monday episode delving into the history and mystery of Jack Frost with guest Dan Harmon.

I chose this as an extra clip this week due to being reminded of its existence by Stephen Krueger of Nooner Podcast. That's a soundcast that airs LIVE on Tuesday nights, 7:30 pm Pacific time…and has been running for over 10 years like THIS show has. Mr. Krueger mentioned that he had heard this episode that featured Dan Harmon and then he mentioned how he missed Dan Harmon…and I thought to myself "Yeah, so do I…I should probably listen to that episode again…I barely remember it etc etc…anyway, I enjoyed hearing it again SO much, I had to include a clip of it for this episode. Buckle up, folks!

At which point our episode will have reached its final moments. It's been real, 2021…a bit TOO real but, I mean…what else IS there? This is what life is. Sometimes it is hard, but sometimes it is also funny. Both of those things are relative and subjective of course but that doesn't negate anything. Having intense joy and intense grief in steady amounts for an extended period of time can be brain-changing.

Laughter has helped, and I HAVE had that this year. I consider myself fortunate to have that, and to know the people that I do. I'm grateful for family, friends, and friendlies alike. Connections have been rough for more people at the same time than likely any other time in modern history. Technology has helped a great deal and I am also grateful for that. Connecting has always been difficult for me, therefore I am always grateful for it.

Thank you to everyone who communicated with me in person, thru the written word, or by telecommunication. Those of you who have heard me say "Be Decent To Each Other" and were either already doing that or have begun to, I would like to thank you for both those scenarios being a part of our shared reality. Thank you for listening, Happy Holidays, and if someone asks you if you have heard anything good or interesting lately, and we come to mind, won't you please pass the Succotash?

Succotash Epi283: Checkin' Up with Dr. London Smith & Cameron Clark

Happy holidays, sweet listener! It’s hard to believe there are just a few scant weeks left in this shitbag of a year. Marc Hershon here, and I’m coming to you today from Studio N, the Nerd Nook extension of Studio P, the Home of the Hit, in Sausalito, California. You’re listening to Episode 283 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast.

Before I get to what’s in store for you on the show, did you have a chance to listen to my inestimable co-host Tyson Saner in last week’s Epi282? He had had a week off – two weeks, really – and, well-rested, he was in fine form! The episode was called “Three On A Whim”, and featured clips from soundcasts F**K My Work Life, Sodajerker On Songwriting, and Rice To Meet You. And you can still get it from any of the usual podspots like Stitcher, Spotify, Apple and Google Podcasts, Audible, Amazon, Soundcloud, and a little homesite we like to lovingly refer to as SuccotashShow.com

I was going to go with clips this week myself, but the opportunity arose to have fellow soundcasters and big cheerleaders of this show on as a guest, Dr. London Smith and Cameron Clark! They host — or rather Dr. London hosts and Cameron produces — the Jock Doc Podcast, which we have featured a couple of clips from before, and I was a guest on their show back in May. Before I could ask them to return the favor and be on Succotash, they invited me back on his soundcast. So we went back-to-back just last night, with me guesting on the Jock Doc Podcast – recording an appearance that will play in the near future – and then London and Cameron appeared on this here soundcast, which is brought to you this week by Henderson's Pants new Jingle Drawers!

Here are some of the soundcasts that London and Cameron mentioned on the show, with links in case you want to check 'em out: Dead Waves, Truthcast, Bald Talk, and Chase Your Enthusiasm.

Always fun hanging out on the Jock Doc Podcast, so it was a fun treat to have those guys hang out here for a bit. The episode of their show I will be appearing on as Dokter Andrew Minutiae, amateur nano technology expert, is slated to drop on January 10th. If you forget that, don’t worry – I’m sure to mention it again!

Tyson Saner will be back in this very same feed next week with episode 284 and some early Christmas presents for you in the form of comedy soundcast clips!

I’m off to get some holiday shopping in, which means I have to dig up my mask. I’m in California where they’re putting an indoor mask mandate back in place this week through the middle of January. Glad I’m vaxxed and boosted– are you? If not, why not? Don’t let a rampant, virulent disease disrupt YOUR holiday this year. So mask up, vax up, and say hello to friends you know, and everyone you meet. Remember, if anyone asks if you’ve heard anything good lately, won’t you please pass the Succotash?

Succotash Epi282: Three On A Whim

Saluton, estas mi, Tyson Saner, your host for this episode of Succotash that numbers 282. I had a couple episodes off recently so executive producer Marc Hershon with whom I share hosting duties stepped up to bring you a fresh show, two weeks in a row. Thank you kindly, sir.
The first, Epi280, featured an interview with the hilarious Dana Gould who, aside from being a comedian most of his life and writing for The Simpsons, amongst other credits, has a great web-based series on his YouTube channel called Hanging with Dr. Z, in which he plays Dr. Zaius from the original Planet of the Apes movies now hosting his own TV talk show…click the link and check that out when you get the time.

And for last week's Episode 281, Mr. Hershon brought you a quartet of clips from the never-featured-on-Succotash-before soundcasts known as B3F, Carefully Reckless, Everything is Alive, and The Amelia Project. This is also an episode that you should check out at your earliest convenience.

On this particular installment of Succotash I've clipped three soundcasts for you to experience. They are called F**K My Work Life, Sodajerker On Songwriting, and Rice To Meet You. I've also got an advert from our longtime fake sponsor Henderson's Pants for you sure to raise a ruckus - it's for their RepubliFit Jeans.

So, how have you been? Crazy year right? It's hard to believe another one is almost over…but I tend to feel that way at the end of every week so…that particular shade of incredulity is a familiar sensation for me. I'd say "I don't know where the time goes" but that's not true. I DO know where time goes. It goes away. And while you're pondering that one, here's another thing for you that is also not true:

I believe there are two types of people, people who believe in dichotomies, and people who don't know what they are!

CLIPS

F**k My Work Life
Hosts Jay & Kay (no last names) use this forum to sharing your workplace stories, with a few of their own, so we can all laugh and/or cry together. Our featured clip comes from their recent episode "Podcast Time Travel", which dropped on October 20, 2021. Jay and Kay are all by themselves again this week and they are officially calling out Coors Light to become a sponsor. They're sharing listener workplace stories, along with some of their own, and debuting the new Rant Line segment!

Sodajerker On Songwriting
A program devoted to the art and craft of songwriting, Sodajerker On Songwriting is created and hosted by Simon Barber and Brian O’Connor, AKA the UK songwriting team Sodajerker from Liverpool, featuring interviews with some of the most successful songwriters and musicians in the world. Our clip is from October 14, 2021, a bonus episode with Giles Martin on Remixing The Beatles.

Rice To Meet You
A comedy podcast about Asian culture, Rice to Meet You is hosted by two UK-based comedians - Nigel Ng and Evelyn Mok. Just like Succotash, new episodes of their show drop every every Tuesday. I've clipped from a fairly recent show back in August entitled "We're Becoming White Middle Class People", and our snippet contains a portion of Nigel's visit to Soho Farmhouse, a chic, countryside hotel.

That brings us merrily along to the end of the first episode of December, #282. Next week Marc Hershon will likely have Epi 283 all ready to go for your listening pleasure. In case you DID want to listen to our archive of episodes, you can probably find them on whichever service you are listening to us on now…and you can definitely find them in the show's archive built up over the last 10 YEARS over at www.succotashshow.com.
If you like video games and the concept of watching other people playing them, you can find a LOT of content of exactly that over at my YouTube channel under a collective banner of content called "Tyson Saner: Gamer". Tweet me at @revt23 and let me know if you do become a viewer of that and/or a listener of THIS. If you become a viewer of this - which is made possible by audio-only-aside-from-limited-imagery episodes being posted on the YouTube channel "Marc Hershon" by…you guessed it, Marc Hershon! Any way you find us, any way you experience us, I do hope your experience is an interesting one…like in a GOOD way…Tweet the show at @SuccotashShow and let us know!

Thank you for listening, be decent to each other, and if anyone asks if you have heard anything interesting…or if you independently come to the realization that you would like to volunteer that information to someone you believe would be receptive to it…won't you Please…Pass The Succotash?

Succotash Epi281: Servin' Up Fresh Leftovers

Your happy-go-lucky every-other-weekly host Tyson Saner is enjoying a well-earned week off to do some family traveling this week, so it’s me, Marc Hershon, back again this week, this time Epi281 of Succotash. The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, hoping that you had a grateful Thanksgiving if you’re in the United States. For anywhere else in the world, did you have a nice Thursday?

For last week’s Episode 280, I had a convivial sit-down with Dana Gould, a great conversation with the shittiest sound quality I have ever had the misfortune to foist upon our Succotash audience since Epi109 and my chat with guest Greg Proops. I believe, decibel for decibel, this one was worse, so apologies again. We’ll have Dana back again and I promise it will be under quieter circumstances. If you want to cringe your way through it, though, it is available through all the usual distribution points, like Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, I Heart Radio, Audible, Amazon Music, Soundcloud or even out homesite, at SuccotashShow.com.

This week, in an episode I’m calling “Servin’ Up Fresh Leftovers”, I have a quartet of clips from four shows I don’t believe we have ever featured during the 10+ years of this show. They are B3F, Carefully Reckless, Everything is Alive, and The Amelia Project. In addition, this installment of Succotash is sponsored by Henderson’s Pants new Parka Pants – at last, your legs will be in heat.

CLIPS

B3F
Kicking us off this week is the B3F soundcast, which booms out of Knoxville, Tennessee, and is hosted by Joey Manning and Steven. I’m not sure what’s Steven’s last name is. I DO know his Twitter handle is @Steven_is_angry, which may explain a lot. The show’s title, B3F, is a way for them to get het REAL title, Best Friends For Fucking Ever, past the soundcast title censors at Apple and other places. And the way I found their show is that they threw @SuccotashShow into a tweet and I included them in last week’s TweetSack segment. These guy shave known each other for over 20 years which means they love and respect one another, while still managing to shit on each other daily. In this clip, taken from their episode 117, the “Drowning Rats” episode, they talk about getting away with murder…or not.

Carefully Reckless
Next up is a clip from the Carefully Reckless soundcast, hosted by comedian and actress Jessica Moore, aka “Jess Hilarious”. Known for bringing her “no holds barred” topics to life on her show, our clip gets her a little closer to home, because her guest is her son, Ash. As you’ll hear when this little man trades barbs with his mom, the apple does not fall far from the attitude tree.

The Amelia Project
The Amelia Project is a curious little soundcast. It’s a scripted show with a very international cast and crew, contributing from places like London, Vienna, Oslo, and Los Angeles. The premise that The Amelia Project is a super-secret organization set up to help people fake their own deaths and start over with a brand new identity and life far from where they were when they choose to end things. The clip we’re featuring is from their recent episode #45, entitled “Raven”, with cast members Carli Fish, Alan Burgon, Julia Morizawa, and Julia C. Thorne. This is from the beginning of the interview with the subject who’d like to start a new life…and why.

Everything Is Alive
Our last clip for this episode comes from a soundcast with another very interesting premise. Everything is Alive is an unscripted interview show where the host and creator, Ian Chillag, chats up pretty much anything BUT people to find out about their lives. I grabbed a snippet from his interview with Michael, the phone booth, portrayed here by Michael Kostroff.

We’ve had no calls the past couple of weeks to the Succotash Show & Runaway Truck Ramp Hotline, at 1 (818) 921-7212, so screw that for this episode!

That’s the button on this episode of Succotash. I’m happy to have been occupying the hosting chair for the past two weeks of the show, but happy to welcome back my illustrious co-host Tyson next week for Episode 282. (I secretly think one of the reasons he wanted to take a week off was so he could go back to hosting the even-numbered shows…) I shall return oddly after that, with Epi283.

Until then, keep us with you as you get your Christmas shopping done, batten down the hatches against the Omicron COVID variant, mask up, vax up, and try to keep a civil tongue in your head when dealing with other folks during this sometimes stressful time of the year. And if anyone asks if you’ve heard anything good lately, won’t you please pass the Succotash?

Succotash Epi280: Hangin' with Dana Gould

I'm Marc Hershon, and Happy Thanksgiving week to you. Our little feast for you with this Episode 280 is pretty neat although you ARE going to have to work a little bit for it, I’m afraid. More about that in a minute.

First, though, did you get a chance to hear the previous episode, #279, entitled “Three For The Road” and helmed by our every-other-weekly host, Tyson Saner? It was a doozy. A movie-induced, triple-banger of a show, featuring clips from Blood and Black Rum PodcastI Finally Watched, and Screen Drafts. You can still grab I from our homesite, at SucccotashShow.com, but also pretty much anywhere soundcasts are streamed and/or downloaded. Like Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Amazon Music, Audible, and so forth.

For this week’s installment, I have a chat with comedian/writer/ producer/soundcaster Dana Gould. He’s written for The Simpsons, he wrote and produced three seasons of Stan Against Evil, a great little show on IFC which you can know find on Hulu, and the second season of a YouTube series he produces and hosts, Hanging with Dr. Z, in which he plays Dr. Zaius from the original Planet of the Apes movies now hosting his own TV talk show is about to drop next February. He’s been hosting his own soundcast, The Dana Gould Hour, for a number of years and, just a couple of weeks ago, a documentary comedy film that Dana made with Bobcat Goldthwait dropped on streaming, called Joyride.

We first got to know each other back in the glory days of the standup comedy boom in San Francisco in the 1980s and as he was just appearing at the Punch Line in San Francisco this past weekend, we got a chance to sit down and catch up.

Now I mentioned you were going to have to work for this episode and here’s what I mean: The audio quality of our interview is incredibly poor. We’d decided to meet at a North Beach café to have our chat, and there was music piped in they wouldn’t turn down, and loud customers nearby. So BIG apologies. I’ve done the best I can to even things out but it’s pretty hard to hear in spots. Hopefully the next time we chat it up, it will be in quieter surroundings.

That’s what's in store for this installment of the Comedy Soundcast Soundscast - the interview plus a spot from our mythological sponsor for their all-new Henderson's Holiday Pants. If you’d like to ream me out for the lousy audio quality of the chat this week, feel free to drop me a note at marc@SuccotashShow.com. I’ll try to do better!

Have yourself a scrumpdidliumptious Thanksgiving or at least the after-feast leftovers. Tyson is taking a well-deserved extra week off next week for some holiday family fun, so I will be here for Epi281 and a selection of comedy soundcast clips. Until then, enjoy yourself, wear a mask if you’re somewhere that calls for it, get vaxxed, if you eat too well, demand Di-Gel, and if anyone asks if you’ve heard anything good lately, won’t you please pass the Succotash?!

Succotash Epi279: Three for the Road

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner…as correctly stated by our illustrious announcer Bill Heywatt. Welcome to Succotash Episode 279. I am your every-other-weekly host which means last week show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon had the hosting duties for Epi278. In that episode, Mr. Hershon interviewed improvisational performer, actor, and voice actor Peter Kim. On the voice acting tip, you might know Peter as the voice of Benny on the Amazon Prime cartoon Fairfax. Perhaps you have heard the soundcast he shares with Eunji Kim called The Ajumma Show, which was featured in Succotash Epi270. Or perhaps you are hearing of him for the first time now. You can always go back and listen to last week's show to hear that interview where Mr. Hershon and Mr. Kim discuss a great many interesting things. (I listen to EVERY episode of Succotash so that I may give my opinion of them with the utmost confidence. I do a LOT of listening. It's kind of my thing…)

Anyway, welcome to THIS week's show where I've clipped some soundcasts for you to get a feel for before potentially seeking out more content from those selfsame soundcasts. I've got clips from Blood and Black Rum Podcast, I Finally Watched, and Screen Drafts. BTW, I've never used the word "selfsame" before the time before the most recent usage of it which was about 14 words ago counting from not this next, but the previous utterance of the word "about". (Also, it takes exactly the same amount of time to say "Bee Tee Dubs" as it does to say "By The Way".)

This episode is sponsored by our mythological sponsor Henderson's Pants' new Bivouac Briefs, developed by the military-industrial complex for soldiers in the field until the program was scrapped and sold off for pennies on the dollar to Old Man Henderson.

CLIPS

Screen Drafts
The soundcast where experts and enthusiasts competitively collaborate in the creation of screen-centric "best of" lists. Hosted by draft commissioners Clay Keller and Ryan Marker, who exhibit the "Most impeccable taste in guests," according to Entertainment Weekly magazine. Our clip is from back in January, the episode that dropped on January 18, and featured director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) and soundcaster David Chen (Culturally Relevant) competitively ranking the best seven films of director John Woo - cue the doves!

Blood and Black Rum Podcast
This cult film/horror soundcast, now in its 6th year according to the website, is hosted weekly by Ryne Barber and Chris Martin, faithfully bringing you "two dudes, brews, and a film. From September of this year, Episode 186 "So Creepy It's Carpenter II / The Fog" was part of the hosts' Halloween season spent with Carpenter's filmography. They regard The Fog as one of the director's better films and yet they have some thoughts about why it falls somewhere in the middle of his best output. they dive deep into this one (as they do all their subjects) so our clip just scratches the surface. (Oh, yeah — the beer on tap for this one is Leinenkugel's Collaboration Lager!)

I Finally Watched…
So many movies, so little time! Two cinephile friends, David and Alain, watch movies that at least one of them has never seen before and discuss whether it was worth the wait, if the movie holds up, and would they watch it again. Back in April, they finally got around to Amadeus from 1984, starring Tom Hulce and F. Murray Abraham. Our clip captures a bit of their back and forth about this period piece.

And that's what gone into the making of Episode 279. I do hope that if you had happened to stumble across us on your way to find something to listen to that we accomplished our mission in bringing you a few more ideas. It's what this show has been doing for over 10 years now.

The reason this episode is titled "Three for the Road" is, well, there are three clips included. Plus I'm hitting the road for the Thanksgiving holiday, so executive producer and my every-other-weekly-host Marc will be driving the Succotash bus for the next two week, Episodes 280 and 281. I will be back after that with more clips for you in Episode 282.

What would really thrill me personally to know is if you had heard about us from someone else and decided to seek us out because of their recommendation. That would be awesome. It means what we are doing is working in some intrinsic way. At least, I think that's what it would mean…I just looked up "intrinsic" and I apparently DO have an understanding of how to use that word having never really done so previously. Uh…hooray? Sure, hooray. Hooray for neuroplasticity, a concept I endorse and have frequently thought about.

Thank you for listening, be decent to each other, go to www.tysonsaner.com for Minecraft videos and other content including original music and other stuff, and if someone does ask if you have heard anything interesting lately and it happens that it was us, won't you please pass the Succotash?

Succotash Epi278: Chattin' with Peter Kim

I am Marc Hershon, your soundcast sommelier for Episode 278 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. For the uninitiated here’s the deal: Most of the time on this show we feature clips from comedy soundcasts harvested from all over the internet, and we tell you where to find them. Occasionally, however, we’ll have a chat with a comedy soundcaster or other show biz-related folks, and that’s what I have for you today – a visit with an old friend of mine and a funny new voice in the world of animation, special guest Peter Kim.

Before I get into his bona fides and our conversation, I wanted to see if you caught our last show, Episode 277 with the co-host I share this feed with, Tyson Saner. We called it “Two Nights & A Bite” and Tyson featured clips from Half Hour Happy Hour: Ladies Night with Alison and Maude (& Tom), Saturday Night Live Afterparty, and Anxiety Bites. If’n you want to check it out, it’s available everywhere fine soundcasts are streamed and/or downloaded, including Apple & Google Podcasts, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music, Stitcher, Soundcloud and our own homesite at SuccotashShow.com.

(Psst: You can visit our website and check out the blog entry that accompanies each and every episode of Succotash in order to find links to the shows we feature as well as to the social media feeds of the hosts and guests of many of those shows.)

As far as this episode’s guest goes, let’s set the table for Peter Kim. We cover a lot of his journey in our convo but I first met him when he was a student in an improv comedy class I was teaching in San Francisco. He busted out and helped to start a whole new improv thing there before jumping across the country and into the scene in New York. From there he headed for the improv homeland of Chicago and immersed himself in Second City which was a whole experience and unintended adventure in itself. He also started a soundcast with Eunji Kim, The Ajumma Show, which we have featured on Succotash. And then he shunted to Los Angeles and started getting some parts in TV. Just this month he made his debut voicing the character of Benny Choi, a 13-year-old kid in the posh Fairfax district of LA in an Amazon Prime cartoon called Fairfax.

Check out the trailer Fairfax here.

Thanks to Peter Kim. Thanks to Bill Heywatt, our announcer. And thanks, most of all, to you. You and your ears. Without you listening, we are nothing.

Next week Tyson will be back with a clutch of soundcast clips for Epi279 so in the meantime be as good as you can be under today’s stressful conditions. Remember to take a deep breath every once in a while. Get vaxxed or boosted. Slap on a mask when you should. And remember: If anyone ever asks if you’ve heard anything good lately, please remember to pass the Succotash!

Succotash Epi277: Two Nights & A Bite

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. I am your host for this first Succotash episode of November. It's number 277, welcome to it. How was your Halloween? Mine hasn't happened yet technically but it will have had by the time you hear this so…Who knows? Will I remember to follow up on it to let you know how it went? Will I tweet about it? How far into the future are you? Does Twitter still exist? Does the internet still exist? How about the iPod, did it make a comeback?…Well, even if it does I imagine this show will still refer to podcasts as "soundcasts" and that's fine by me.

Last week on Epi276, show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon brought you a quartet of clips from the likes of Mike and Tom Eat Snacks, O'Brien & Bolt: the Podcasts, The Dana Gould Hour, and The Projection Booth/Kulturecast crossover. It's an episode full of entertainment and I urge you to check it out at your earliest convenience.

This week, I've selected 3 clips for your listening pleasure. They are from the soundcasts known as Half Hour Happy Hour: Ladies Night with Alison and Maude (& Tom), Saturday Night Live Afterparty, and Anxiety Bites.

There's also a classic Henderson's Pants advert from 2014 - Henderson's Pedestrian Pants - for you to enjoy…or process however you choose to, really. It's a fun ad from our longtime fake sponsor. Can you believe this show has survived for 10 years without actual sponsorship? Well,…it has.

CLIPS

Half Hour Happy Hour: Ladies Night with Alison and Maude (& Tom)
Each week Alison Haislip and Maude Garrett (w/Tom Rajewski) sit down for a half hour of happy hour. Drinks are drank and conversations are had covering stories both important and useless. Sit, relax, and knock back a glass of your favorite adult beverage while you laugh with (or at) them for the next 30ish minutes. Our featured clips is from their October 7th show of this year, entitled "VHS Clamshells from The Vault", where the gang issues back together for more libations and to catch up!

Anxiety Bites
Comedian Jen Kirkman, who has had life-long Panic and Generalized Anxiety Disorder, brings her life-lessons, humor, and hope to a show that’s about normalizing having anxiety so that we go from whispering dramatically, “I have anxiety” to saying out loud with a shrug, “Yeah, I have anxiety.” Jen interviews experts with anxiety — be they PhD’s, creatives, or spiritual gurus — for advice on how to self-diagnose, begin to treat, and how to live easily with everyday anxiety and panic and, at the very least, giving an interesting, relatable, calming listen. We clip the show called "Anxiety is Old Habit!" from just this past month, where Jen talked to NY Times Bestselling Author, MD, PhD, Dr. Jud Brewer and finds out how our fingers can help us during a panic attack, sometimes neuroscience puts out the fire of anxiety better than therapy, and why the hell haven't our brains evolved beyond thinking we're in danger when we're not?

Saturday Night Live (SNL) Afterparty
A Peabody Award-coveting podcast review of NBC's storied late night show SNL, featuring intimate, probing, aggressive—yet tender—conversations with fresh, young, supple voices from across the comedy landscape. Hosted by John Murray of the Spry Agency, and including Katherine Coleman and Steve Finn. Our clip is from the episode looking at Owen Wilson's hosting on October 2nd of this year, as well as musical guest Kacey Musgraves.

And that's what's in store in our first show of November, the first show after Halloween…and we march steadily on towards December and the end of the year that was 2021…Or rather, still IS 2021. How is it that 2021 has been actually somewhat more frustrating than 2020 was? I suppose that's a subjective observation but I'd be willing to bet that I am not alone in that estimation.

Thank you for listening, I do hope you got something out of this brief moment in time and that it was positive. I do hope 2022 is better but I'm in no hurry to get there lately. Time moves too fast for my taste lately. Perspective is what it is. Next show up in a week is Epi278 and Marc Hershon is at the wheel and then, presumably, I will be back for Epi279.

Until then, be decent to each other, try not to spread disease or bad ideas, and if anyone asks you if you have heard anything interesting lately and it happens to be us that fills in that particular blank for you, won't you do us the utmost of favors and please pass the Succotash?

Succotash Epi276: Team-Ups n' Friends

Hello, Succotashians, wherever you may be! Can you believe we are into the last week of October, 2021 at this point? Before I get too far ahead of myself, I’m Marc Hershon, your host for this week’s show Epi276, and I have got a humdinger of a show for you, as defined by the quartet of clips I have harvested.

Before I reveal the lineup for this episode, did you miss our last episode, number 275, moderated by your every-other-weekly host, Tyson Saner? It was a fun ‘un, for sure, and featured clips from Dragon Talk, Cinemassacre Podcast, and Metaphysical Milkshake with Rainn and Reza.

This week’s installment has some overt team-ups, with Mike & Tom Eat Snacks and O’Brien & Bolt. Then there’s subtler team-ups, as with the two hosts of The Projection Booth, and The Dana Gould Hour, where the host brings in a few pals to riff with him about horror movies.

And this being Halloween week, we’re sponsored by Henderson’s Pants Deathly Hallowear. Protect your delicate treats from the ravages of Halloween miscreants!

THE CLIPS

Mike And Tom Eat Snacks
First up is a warm welcome for the return of what was one of my favorite soundcasts back aways: Mike And Tom Eat Snacks. The hosts, Michael Ian Black and Tom Cavanagh hit episode 100 about 4 years ago and went on hiatus. Or hung up their snack shoes. Or who knows what but the important thing is that they are back! Armed with little more than their wits and their PER system – Pick a snack, Eat a snack, Rate a snack – these wisecracking jackanapes surround the most mundane of tasks – eating junk food – with the kind of very funny patter that you can only get with a couple of close friends who also happen to be pretty damn funny. Michael was part of The State, Wet Hot American Summer, and tons of other stuff, and Tom is currently best known for playing the many incarnation of Harrison Welles and the Reverse Flash on the CW’s The Flash. Our clip is from their recent noshing on Walker’s Shortbread.

O’Brien & Bolt: The Podcasts
Two of the funniest guys I know are likely a pair of improv comics you may have never heard of outside the San Francisco Bay Area. Michael O’Brien and Geoff Bolt have forgotten more improv than I’ll ever know, and I’ve been doing it for 35 years. There’s a long history of improv groups in San Francisco, including the National Theatre of the Deranged, Spaghetti Jam, Improv Incorporated, Papaya Juice, and more – and these guys have either been in or jammed with all of them. They’ve started laying down some of their characters through improvised scenes as soundcast episodes in O’Brien & Bolt: The Podcasts, so I wanted to turn you onto them so you could track down their show. The clip we have on deck introduces us to third base coach Stumpy Wilson and some of his “inside baseball” wisdom.

The Dana Gould Hour
When is an hour not an hour? When it’s The Dana Gould Hour! The latest episode, “House of Halloweenery” runs a good two and a half hours…and I’m not complaining! Host Dana Gould is super-funny, off-kilter, and can get pretty dark. He did, after all, come up with the IFC show Stan Against Evil  and it is a good barometer of Dana’s sense of humor. In the latest episode of his soundcast, he starts out talking to Jeff Abraham and Burt Kearns, authors of “The Show Won’t Go On!”, stories about performers who literally died on stage. This clip is from the back half of the show when he talks horror movies and more with friend-of-Succotash Matt Weinhold and Ken Daly, who I wish was a friend of the show.

The Projection Booth
I’m not sure The Projection Booth qualifies as a comedy soundcast per se but hosts Mike White and Rob St. Mary do have some differences of opinion when it comes to reviewing films that can get a little testy and, frankly, a lot funny. This clip is from a recent episode when the guys put the new Dune movie up against the Dune movie directed by David Lynch back in 1984.

I was late getting this episode up and out this week, mainly because the power was out in Studio N, my Nerd Nook, because of the storms this past weekend in the Bay Area. So I couldn’t harvest clips or get much of anything else done. So we had to dispense with the TweetSack this time around. And there were no calls into the Succotash Soundcast & Runaway Truck Status Hotline.

Tyson Saner will be in this feed with your next week for Epi277 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, and I’ll be back the week after that. In the meantime, have a great Halloween, wear a mask, get vaxxed and, if anyone asks if you’ve heard anything good lately, won’t you please pass the Succotash?

Succotash Epi275: Nerdin' Out w/Fantasy, Games & Music

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. Welcome to Episode 275 of Succotash — I'm glad you found us. We have been here for over 10 years now, bringing clips of soundcasts from more-or-less around the globe for your ears to sample in the hopes that you might hear something you like and would like to hear more of, well, more of other people's soundcasts, specifically.

Last week in Epi274, my co-host and your every-other-show-host Marc Hershon brought you what he referred to as "a full rack of clips" and I concur. He clipped from soundcasts For What It’s Worth, Storytime with Seth Rogen, How to Survive! with Danielle & Kristine, and Films to Be Buried With with Brett Goldstein. He also featured a bonus clip of a soundcast called "What Are You Watching?, hosted by soundcaster and friend of the show Chris Mancini. The clip was from a recent episode that none other than the aforementioned Marc Hershon was a guest on. Lots of great content in that episode.

This, however, is Epi275 and I've got three clips. One apiece from the soundcasts known as Dragon Talk, Cinemassacre Podcast, and Metaphysical Milkshake with Rainn and Reza. I'm sure I will be including a classic advert from our longtime fake sponsor Henderson's Pants and their all-inclusive new CoverAlls to "round things out" nicely. I'm using air-quotes when I say "round things out" because I am not sure I am using it correctly in this context. Anyone?

CLIPS

Dragon Talk
Go inside the walls of Dungeons & Dragons for exclusive interviews and previews as the D&D team sits down each week with celebrities and personalities from across gaming and pop culture to discuss one of the greatest fantasy brands of all-time. Hosts Greg Tito and Shelly Mazzanoble talk about the tabletop roleplaying game, as the latest in D&D video games, comics, novels, movies, and television. Our clip is from May of last year, with special guest, comedian and actor Jeff Cannata diving into the Random Character Generator with Kate Welch.

Cinemassacre Podcast
The crew of Cinemassacre (James Rolfe, Kieran Fallon, and Justin Silverman) are out of the Nerd Room and into your ear-holes. They chat about their lives and the stuff they love: movies, games, and making videos. You’ll also hear about behind-the-scenes antics, anecdotes about being long-time YouTubers, and a ton of obscure pop-culture crap. It’s the off-the-cuff banter from Rental Reviews mixed with an AVGN panel, every Tuesday! Our clip comes from just back around the corner - this past September - in an episode entitled, "Wy Do We Destroy Video Games?, Bigfoot, and Re-Editing Star Wars".

Metaphysical Milkshake with Rainn & Reza
Hosted by actor Rainn Wilson and scholar Reza AslanMetaphysical Milkshake is a weekly soundcast where they go deep, get weird…and search for the meaning of life along the way. Every week the co-hosts guide you through conversations about Life’s Big Questions. And a clip from just last month, they pose one such query to their guest, Grammy-winning musician Jason Isbell, asking him, "Where Does Music Come From?"

I believe that's a pretty decent selection of audio from other peoples' soundcasts. I do enjoy listening to other people have conversations about all sorts of things. Were it not for being involved with this particular soundcast for the number of years that I have, I don't know if I would have ever heard the variety or sheer amount of other peoples conversations.

I do have soundcasts that I listen to regularly, meaning that I will hear every episode they post as soon as possible after they post and I feel very fortunate to be able to do so. I think it has made me a better listener in general somehow… perhaps it functions the same way practicing anything theoretically is supposed to…I really don't know.

Anyway, next week Marc Hershon will be back with more content in Epi276 and I will should be back the week after that if that is indeed what the future has in store for me. I am still making videogaming content for my YouTube channel which you can find by searching my name "Tyson Saner" in YouTube or you can go to www.tysonsaner.com to find a direct link to my channel as well as to various other entertainment endeavors I have been a part of in my improbably fortunate existence.

Thank you for listening, be decent to each other, and if anyone asks you if you have heard anything interesting recently and that thing happens to be any of the content in this episode, won't you please pass the Succotash?

Succotash Epi274: Cavalcadin' a Handful of Clips

Welcome back if you’re a return listener to this soundcast. If this is your first time in, welcome as well to Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, where we offer you a weekly tasting platter of comedy soundcasts from around the internet for your ears. Bite-sized little clips that will, hopefully, tempt you to seek out the shows we’re featuring in their entirety.

I’m your host for Episode 274, Marc Hershon, but to keep up the frenetic pace of putting out a weekly show, I split the hosting duties by switching off weeks with Mr. Tyson Saner. And if you didn’t catch last week’s entry, Epi273, in which Tyson featured clips from Amazing Pop Culture PodcastLife is Short with Justin Long, and WTF with Marc Maron. Don’t despair, as you can still catch the episode on Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Audible, iHeart Radio, Soundcloud, and wherever fine soundcasts are streamed and/or downloaded. You can also grab it from our homesite, SuccotashShow.com, where we have stockpiled our past 10+ years of comedy soundcast clippery and also interviews we have done over the past decade.

Just a quick reminder that Tyson and I are currently (and always have been) clipping and presenting this array of soundcast snacks out of the goodness of our hearts. We so far have failed to lure any sponsors to this show, other than our freeloading fake advertiser Henderson’s Pants, and it actually costs money to put this sucker out every week. We’re not complaining – we love doing this – but what would be so super nice of you would be if you could show your appreciation for our efforts by rating and reviewing Succotash Show wherever you happen to be getting it from. A quick five stars, a couple of lines about how enchanting the show is – you’re in, you’re out, no one gets hurt. Thanks in advance – we really do appreciate your listenership and we hate to beg, but hey…

I’ve got a full rack of clips to share with you this week, from comedy soundcasts For What It’s Worth, Storytime with Seth Rogen, How to Survive! with Danielle & Kristine, and Movies to Be Buried With with Brett Goldstein. In addition, this episode is brought to you by Henderson’s Pants new Beavertail Pants!

CLIPS

What Are You Watching?
I’m going to kick things off with a special bonus clip! What makes it special? Well, I’m in it. That’s right. It’s me being featured as a guest on another soundcast. Hosted by past Succotash guest and friend of the show Chris Mancini, What Are You Watching? is Chris and a guest talking about what they’re watching, mostly on TV but sometimes movies, too. So we’ve had Chris on, we’ve featured his soundcast, so all it took was a little begging and pleading to be invited to be the guest for his recent Episode 50. It was a nice change of pace to be the interviewee, and we had a great time talking about a bunch of shows. The clip is from our discussion of the Hulu/FX streaming show Y: The Last Man.

Movies to be Buried With with Brett Goldstein
If you’re a fan of Ted Lasso, the big breakout hit on Apple TV last year starring Jason Sudekis – as I am, regardless of the pounding it’s been taking from people this season – then you probably also love the character of Roy Kent. Portrayed by Brett Goldstein, Roy’s a foul-mouthed contentious veteran footballer who becomes a foul-mouthed, slightly less contentious coach in Season 2. Brett started out as a staff writer on the show who lobbied Sudekis and the producers to let him play Roy and wouldn’t you know? The guy’s perfect. What I didn’t know of, I’m ashamed to say, is that Brett is also a comedian and, what’s more, has been hosting more than 160 of episodes of his own comedy soundcast called Movies To Be Buried With, with Brett Goldstein. He brings in a guest, explains that they’ve been killed in some manner, but the good news is that they go onto an afterlife where they get to explain their life through their favorite movies. Episode 121 featured guest Patton Oswalt and, as you can imagine, hilarity ensued. We have an ear peek for you…

How To Survive! with Danielle & Kristine
Next up is a clip from the debut episode of a brand new comedy soundcast: How To Survive! with Danielle & Kristine. Every episode features hosts Danielle Koenig & Kristine Kimmel doing their best to help you figure out how to “survive the things that could kill you and the stuff that just makes you wish you were dead.” In their kickoff installment, it’s how to both survive a wildfire and also, with the help of their comedic actress friend and guest, Alex Alexander, how to survive being fired. Our clip is from the first part, and jumps into what you should do if you’re at home and can see a fire coming…

Storytime with Seth Rogen
We’ve clipped another soundcast that just kicked off  in recent weeks: Storytime with Seth Rogen. Seth has a very funny and creative mind, and this is a pretty inventive show, with guests popping in an out as he unfolds someone’s story that intersects with other people and becomes their story along the way. In his first episode, the story belongs to Quinta Brunson, a writer, producer, comedian, and actress. You may know her from her self-produced Instagram series Girl Who Has Never Been on a Nice Date. But before she got into showbiz, she was a Jehovah’s Witness, living a pretty buttoned up lifestyle. Until she was on a date in Phildelphia and happened to meet Paul Rudd, yes, that Paul Rudd, at the movie theater she was in. The impact of that encounter changed the course of her life. Our clip is from Seth’s chat with Paul Rudd, who doesn’t recall his encounter with Quinta, but does explain why he’s so damn nice to people.

For What It’s Worth
Murray Valeriano is a comedian and longtime soundcaster – you maybe heard his show Road Stories, where he chatted with fellow comics about mostly hell gigs – and we’ve met repeatedly during the five-year-run of the Los Angeles Podcast Festival. He has a new-ish soundcast up and running, which I reviewed last week for This Week in Comedy Podcasts for Vulture.com called For What It’s Worth and, as Murray calls it, “the only music and comedy game show … that matters!” It’s a fast-paced game show with a lot of opportunities for the comedian contestant to bust each other’s (and Muraay’s) chops while trying desperately to correctly answer music trivia questions. This clip is from a recent episode featuring Jimmy Pardo, Gary Brightwell, and Geoff Tate, and the opening round, called “The Rock Wall”.

That’s what you're going to hear, and a few other little odds and ends, on Succotash Epi274. Here’s hoping you enjoy our clip harvest for this week, and that you are inspired to go listen to one or all of the shows we’re featuring this week. If you’re having trouble remembering the show titles or where you can find them, I invite you to slide over to our blog page for this episode at our homesite, SuccotashShow.com, where you’ll find lovely little clickable titles for the show AND clickable Twitter or Instagram links for the folks involved in the soundcasts.

Tyson Saner will be right in this same feed next week with Episode 275 which will likely have a new crop o’ clips for you. In the meantime, try to treat everyone you meet decently, wear a mask if you’re supposed to, vax if you haven’t, and if anyone asks if you’ve heard anything good lately, won’t you please pass the Succotash?

— Marc Hershon
