Succotash Epi336 - Second Helping of Epi119 with special guest Brian Haley

Happy holiday limbo week, listener, as we say au revoir to 2022 and hello to 2023! Welcome to Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, Episode 336. I’m Marc Hershon, your host this week for a Succotash Second Helping because I – like many of you – am on vacation from work this week and didn’t want to miss too much of it by cobbling together…I’m sorry…curating a collection of fresh soundcast clips for you this time out.

As I said, I’m off this week so I’ve opened the vault that holds the Succotash archives and digging way back 7 years or so – to our Epi119 that dropped on November 5, 2015. It features my interview with comedian and actor Brian Haley, in an episode entitled “Takin’ Haley’s Comments”.

This episode also features a double dose of our old Burst O’ Durst feature with comedian Will Durst. Update on Will’s condition: As many of you know, he suffered a stroke while waiting backstage for a show a little over 3 years ago and is still on the road to recovery. He’s been doing a little bit of performing in the past year – nothing too strenuous or long-winded, and he is still in a recovery facility undergoing daily physical therapy to get back walking again, as well as to regain full use of his left arm. Our clip is snipped from recent Episode 4 from November, 2022, and features guest Sara Benincasa, host of the Well, This Isn’t Normal soundcast and author of "Real Artists Have Day Jobs", "Agorafabulous!" and more!

The Besties
As the show's description goes, "It's 'Game of the Year' meets 'King of the Hill' as four of Earth's best friends – Griffin McElroy, Justin McElroy, Chris Plante, and Russ Frushtick – rank and review their favorite video games. Because shouldn't the world's best friends pick the world's best games?" Our selected snippet is from November 17th, 2022, an episode netitled "Boldly Going Where No Hedgehog's Gone Before in Sonic Frontiers", and in this clip is the end of the conversation about the game "Somerville", which leads into a conversation about the game "Pentiment" on Xbox Game Pass.

The Viral Podcast
I read that hosts Chelcie Lynn and Paige Ginn are comedians — not therapists — but they have a soundcast which is pretty much the same thing. We sample that in this clip from Epi60 from earlier this month, when the hosts talked about terrible roommates, human tables, goals, salt baths, self help, jokes, would-you-rathers, Oh Do Me, and much more!

And that brings us more or less neatly to the end portion of Epi335. I do hope you find something in this episode that was enjoyable, and perhaps you will go in search of one or all of the soundcasts you heard to listen to more of their content. Fandom! The Podcast
I had pretty much pulled all the clips together for this episode and was getting ready to record when I happened to have a text exchange with a couple of old friends of mine from my sketch comedy days in North Hollywood with a group called Fries On The Side. Kenny Stevenson and Dorien Davies have been special guests on Succotash WAY back in Episode 20(!) Anyway, we were texting about something or another and Kenny mentioned that he and another old chum, Alex Enriquez, had just started a new soundcast. Kenny used to co-host a sports soundcast called Knuckle Sanwich – great title – but that had been down for a while. So he and Alex have started a new show – right up my alley as they cover a lot of super-nerdy pop culture territory – and I just got this clip in under the wire for this episode. Their show is called Fandom! The Podcast, from the Fan Controlled Network, and their most recent episode talks a lot about the new Willow streaming show on Disney+.

Jordan Klepper Fingers the Conspiracy
One of the best forces for pseudo-journalism goodness has got to be Jordan Klepper, who’s been a fixture on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show for years. He’s got a six-episode limited-run soundcast under the Comedy Central banner called Jordan Klepper Fingers The Conspiracy, where he digs deep into some of the wildest MAGA theories he’s heard and, according to the show’s description, “traces their origins with journalists, experts, and anyone who might have a lead on when JFK Jr. is coming back. The soundcast offers an opportunity to better understand some of the most extravagant stories Americans tell themselves.” In Epi5 of the series, Jordan wades deep into the history and mystery that is “Hunter Biden’s Laptop.” We have a sample…

Hey Riddle Riddle
I’ll be the first to admit this, but some soundcasts get past me. Maybe I’m not paying attention or maybe it’s because there are a couple hundred THOUSAND of them out there now. But I’m really ashamed to ‘fess up to missing Hey Riddle Riddle, mainly because it’s hosted by a trio of improv and sketch performers and those are MY people. Adal Rifai, Erin Keif, and John Patrick Coan are Chicago-based and they’ve been doing Hey Riddle Riddle for at least 4 years now. Out of the Headgum Studios, their homesite only has shows through their 4th anniversary show, which dropped this past August 27th. But there are still fresh installments coming out, available on Apple Podcasts, etc. What is Hey Riddle Riddle, for those of you who are like me and in the dark? Their show’s description on Apple Podcasts reads, “Riddles! Puzzles! WhoDunnits! Adal Rifai, Erin Keif and John Patrick Coan, three of Chicago's most overrated improvisers, are on the case to solve every riddle, puzzle, brainteaser, and head-scratcher known to humanity. Some riddles are almost impossible, some are absolutely improbable, and some simply have not aged well. And if you don't like riddles, don't worry! This podcast is barely about them!” I bring you a pull from their 4th season finale episode where they get into guessing movie title mashups.

The Salty Language Podcast
If you’ve been a listener to this soundcast for any appreciable length of time, you know that both Tyson and I do have our favorites out there in Soundcastland. So we occasionally show them a bit more love than some of the other shows we feature. Tyson just played a bit last episode from our chum Davian Dent from England. I often talk with Jabs AKA Jason McNamara in Australia. And other folks like Hunter Block from Anti Social Show, Ethan Dettenmeier of Combat Radio, Ed Wallick from the hiatus’ed Don’t Quit Your Daycast, and Travis Clark from, originally, Tiny Odd Conversations. A few shows retweet OUR tweets religiously – like The Jock Doc Podcast and I Shake My Head with Lisa and Sam. So I want to do them a solid and recognize their place in our Soundcast Society, too, which is why we’re featuring a clip from a recent installment of The Salty Language Podcast. Hosted by Tony and Bryan, this show has been around probably as long as Succotash. Sluggin’ out the episodes one after the other. The show’s simple description on their homesite reads, “A soundcast about pop culture, living life, and anything else in our tiny brains.” This clip is about one of the guys having made it to his first in-person medical checkup since COVID started.

Man Thinkers
It’s hard to tell if the attitude of the hardcore male chauvinist is on the run or just biding its time. I’d like to think that kind of backwards attitude that men have towards women is being eclipsed by something more forward-thinking. Whatever the case, it’s a way of thinking that soundcasters are having fun ripping on in a variety of ways. One of those is an iHeart Radio production, a show called Man Thinkers, featuring George Collins and Dan Finklestein. Here is how the show is described over on Apple Podcasts: “Man Thinkers is a podcast where the facts...are up for debate. For decades, the lamestream media has prevented real men from sharing their knowledge. On Man Thinkers, there are no degrees and no rules. The hosts aren't impressed by run-of-the-mill ‘experts.’ Man Thinkers is a new space populated by iconoclastic thinkers, academic renegades, and media personalities that sound unlike anything else. Cable news is for the old and social media has become too toxic to trust. George and Dan courageously have the tough conversations that mainstream media won’t touch. Man Thinkers is a safe space from safe spaces, nothing is off limits.” In a recent episode that dropped back on November 24th of this year, George and Dan had two women on the show: Liz Plank and Monica Padman. Lis is a Canadian journalist, author, and soundcast host. Monica is an actor, podcast producer and co-host – you’ve heard her on here before when we’ve clipped Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard. The Man Thinkers had them on to talk about women freezing their eggs. Here’s how part of the conversation went…

Our clip was harvested from their second episode that dropped October 20th, 2022, entitled "Space, Where Billionaires Go to Die", in which is discussed (as the episode description indicates) The River in Humboldt, Space, and Billionaires abandoning up for the stars.

The Bitter Sound
In place of our usual phony ad from fake sponsor Henderson's Pants, we have a clip from what I'm told is a future episode of The Bitter Sound", created by friend-of-Succotash Davian Dent. Its description says that it is "A stereophonic journey into a world of dark comedy, music and strange audio."

And hey, just when it is feeling good to be back another show comes to a close. Isn't that the way of things? I do hope you found something of interest in the offerings placed before your hungry-hungry earholes. I listen to a LOT of podcasts, and every time I say that it is even more true. I'm almost certain that I will not be able to hear everyone's podcast at least once before I die due to time and life constraints but I am ok with that…I still listen to a LOT of podcasts…and I usually refer to them as "soundcasts" within the confines of this show as well as when I explain what the show is to other people.

It doesn't come up that often. It's usually related to the "So, what do you do?" part of a getting-to-know-someone conversation, and I don't really have those all that often. I suspect as the world opens up more I will get that opportunity so I guess it is good to practice.

Our esteemed announcer, Bill Heywatt, kicks off the show in the usual fashion but I wanted to let you know, personally, that I am on vacation this week and that what we’re serving up for your for Episode 331 is actually a Succotash: Second Helping of Episode 217. It’s our show from August 25th, 2020, in the depths of the COVID pandemic, with my special guest Mike Birbiglia.

Mike’s on Broadway right now, scoring big with his new stage show, “The Old Man and The Pool”, but back then he was still putting the show together and you’ll get to hear him kicking around what he was thinking of doing. It’s a good chat, which I am going to kick back and listen to while I’m polishing off some Thanksgiving leftovers!

Succotash Epi330: Early Thanksgiving Feast O' Clips

My Dad Wrote A Porno
One of the most unique soundcasts when it debuted back in 2015 had to be My Dad Wrote A Porno. Jamie Morton discovered that his father, writing under the nom de plume “Rocky Flintstone”, had written a pornographic novel call Belinda Blinked. Reading it aloud to his friends James Cooper and Alice Levine proved to be too hilarious to keep to themselves so they turned the experience into a soundcast. I actually chatted with the trio back in our Episode 141, which you can check out on our SuccotashShow.com homesite. I wanted to revisit the show because they have recently announced that My Dad Wrote A Porno will be closing down next month. Maybe it's because they’re tired of it, or maybe Rocky won’t stop writing porn – he’s up to his 6th book in the Belinda Blinked saga. This clip is from their “Best of Book 6” episode, where they get into some of Belinda’s best bits, so to speak.

Ghosted!There is certainly no shortage of soundcasts dealing with the paramormal out there. Many of them lean into comedy because, otherwise, I guess we’d just be scared shitless all the time. Take, ofr instance, the clip we have from Ghosted! With Roz Hernandez. Specifically from an episode that dropped earlier this month, where Roz’ guest was comedian Matt Braunger. In this part of the show, they listened to a couple of EVPs, or “electronic voice phenomena”. If you don’t know what those are, Roz explains at the top of the clips. And even with Roz and Matt joking about what they’re hearing, you might want to sleep with your light on from now on…

Judith Lucy: Overwhelmed & Living
I was turned onto this next Australian-based soundcast from our friend “Jabs”, or Jason McNamara as it says on his birth certificate, host of The DHead Factor, which is currently on the longest hiatus ever, as well as Boganwood. The soundcast is Judith Lucy: Overwhelmed & Living, and Jabs says Judith Lucy has “very dry but hilarious Australian humor”. The show description on Apple Podcasts reads: “After lockdown Judith is still asking the big questions. Between baking and wondering if she had a drinking problem, Judith wondered how happy we'd been in our old lives and why 'back to normal' is not a good idea for us or the planet. She's out to change her life and yours.” In our clip, she decides to make some changes in her home to save money and to benefit the environment. She invites Brett Hedger, the greenhouse programs officer for the City of Port Phillip, over to see just how bad her place is. It’s…not good.

The Midnight Snack
One of the first Succotash listener-slash-supporters-slash-soundcasters out there to start using the term soundcast  for their own show was Dave In The Cave. That’s the only name I ever called him (although I do know his nae is actually Dave Howard…), and he had a show called Taco Tuesdays. That show ended up, eventually, in the soundcast graveyard – which is a segment we should maybe bring back. After a few years off my radar, Dave In The Cave popped back on when he responded to one of our Succotash tweets last week. It turns out he has a soundcast called The Midnight Snack but he's kind of off the reservation in terms of where the show is distributed. OUr clips is from a-ways back. 4 years back, in fact, from January 16th of 2018 - with guest Eden Rohatensky, whom Tuck talks to about such topics as adding a non-binary voice to the #MeToo movement, the difficulties of coming out as non-binary in other languages, how coming out helped Eden recognize their privilege, navigating the tech industry as a non-straight-white-dude, and exploring the question: Is gender a spooky ghost?

The Pen Pals Podcast
As the show's description promises: "Every week, your pen pals, Daniel Van Kirk and Rory Scovel, respond to the letters you send them on topics ranging from free will to freeway etiquette, from mental health to manatees. Succotash Epi328: Such Lovely Autumn Clips

Hello, listener, and welcome to Succotash, THE Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. I am none other than Marc Hershon, your every-other-weekly co-host of this here show, a duty I delightfully split with Tyson Saner.

The Weird Place
As I mentioned, we had Dana Carvey on the show two episodes ago, mostly to talk about The Weird Place, his new comedy scripted show. I encourage you to go listen to that for a lot of inside scoop on the show. And although I played a little one minute teaser for the show, I wasn’t allowed to clip the show until it officially dropped, which JUST happen on Halloween. So here are a few minutes of their very first episode, entitled “Pirates vs. Submarine, Part 1”.

Hamish & Andy
We next venture from The Weird Place to Down Under, and a soundcast called Hamish & Andy. The hosts, Hamish Blake and Andy Lee, got started radio, it seems, but have gone full soundcasts as of about 5 years ago. I checked in with friend-of-the-show Jason McNamara, AKA “Jabs”, who live in Canberra, and he says, “They’re massive here. Have TV shows and everything.” They seem super popular in a lot of places around the world, so it’s high time we gave ‘em a snip on Succotash. In this clip they’ve discovered they have not only been recently featured in a magazine called Podcast Weekly, and there’s the Hamish & Andy quiz, where you can learn if you most like Hamish, Andy, or their producer, Jack.

Endless Honeymoon
Co-host Tyson clipped the Endless Honeymoon soundcast a little over a year ago, but hosts Moshe Kasher and Natasha Leggero recently had Dak Sheper, of Armchair Expert soundcast fame, on and they got into a lot of interesting conversational territories. At one point, Dak and Moshe started comparing the sizes of their RVs. As men do.

DorkNation (High School Sucked)
I’m a little confused by our next offering, which is back in the U of A. I first thought the soundcast was called High School Sucked, hosted by Jane Stanton and Darcy Michael. But the most recent three episodes are called DorkNation – one word: Dorknation – and the “About” section on the website says “Jane Stanton hosts new guests each week to dish some dirt on High School. Were they best years of our lives? Does it actually get better? Join us with a new guest each week as we attempt relive the "glory" days.” And then the first episode of “DorkNation has both hosts kicking off what they’re calling “High School Sucked.” This episode, the first of three DorkNation shows – maybe more are coming, I’m not sure – feature just ordinary folks waxing on about how miserable high school was. This clip features a guest named Haylyn talking about how her best friend, who started out as her worst enemy, managed to get through it all.

Callan’s Kicks
Let’s head over to Ireland now for a clip from a soundcast called Callan’s Kicks, featuring Oliver Callan, who is a comedian, a voice actor, and an impressionist. He’s been doing his soundcast almost as long as we have, having started back 10 years ago in 2012. And his “kicks”, are a reference to the satirical shots he takes on the show at a variety of public figures, mostly through audio sketches where he does the voice of whomever he’s sniping at. Our snippet is from the episode that dropped just last week, entitled “Rishi, Bono, and Halloween”. Here’s Bono, reading an excerpt from his new book about Ireland.

Young Man by Old Neil

A twelve episode weekly series, I,, Podius, featureshosts John Hodgman and Elliott Kalan recapping the BBC miniseries I, Claudius, an adaptation of Robert Graves’ "I, Claudius" and "Claudius the God". The gimmick? John's watched the show before. Elliott's watching for the first time. The miniseries features an obscenely talented ensemble cast, and is chock full of sex, backstabbing and murder. This ain't your daddy's I, Claudius!. Well, actually it is as the series premiered in 1976. But this ain't your daddy's I, Claudius-based podcast! Parental discretion advised. Our clip is from the very first episode, "A Touch of Murder"/"Family Affairs", which dropped back on February 17th of 2020 - just about a month before all the COVID trouble started.

Earwolf Presents: 2 Spooky 2 Handle

Succotash Epi326 — Dana Carvey & The Weird Place

Hello, listener-friend! It’s me, Marc Hershon, executive producer and every-other-weekly co-host of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. You’re here for episode 326 and so am I, where we have special guest Dana Carvey returning and we’re going to talk about his new soundcast that’s just about to drop…but more on that in a moment.

In case you missed last week’s Epi325 of the show, hosted by my unparalleled every-OTHER-weekly co-host Tyson Saner, it was an fantastical half-hour that included a triple shot sampling of soundcasts — in a show entitled “They Can’t All Be Comedy" — from the likes of Word In Your Ear, Going Deep, and Bubble. And see, that first one on the list – Word In Your Ear – that’s a music-oriented soundcast. Because, although we tout ourselves as “THE Comedy Soundcast Soundcast”, sometimes we let ourselves stray from the format because that’s what we do. If that pisses you off, you can go listen to…oh, that’s right. There is no other Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. So enjoy!

As I was saying, my special guest this week is none other that Dana Carvey. You know him from his year on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, the short-lived-but-amazing The Dana Carvey Show, Garth from Wayne’s World, The Master of Disguise, comedy specials, and from here – Succotash – where’s he’s been a recurring special guest since we first started in 2011. Heck, he was our very first guest back in Episode THREE. In our chat I say that he last visited us a couple of years ago but, in reality, it was just back in February of this year. And now he’s back!

And for a special reason. Last time he was on he was talking about the soundcast he’d started with fellow SNL alumnus David Spade called Fly On The Wall. Where they interview guests who were either part of the SNL cast or crew, or else were hosts, or musical guests. It’s been doing REALLY well and they’re not only going to do another season of those shows but there might even be a spin-off companion show to that.

But, not satisfied with slicing off that corner of SoundcastLand, Dana is working with his sons, Dex and Tom, and their friend Julian, to create a scripted comedy soundcast. It’s called The Weird Place, and it’s a Looney Tunes tweak of a kind of Twilight Zone concept and it’s going to be dropping very soon. On Halloween day, to be exact.

We talk all about it. So here’s what I’m going to set the table. First, we’ll play a little one-minute teaser that they’ve done for the show. Then I’ll play an ad from our fake sponsor, Henderson’s Pants and their Deathly HalloWear. And then we’ll go right into my chat with Dana.

From the show description for Word In Your Ear, we learn that Mark Ellen and David Hepworth have been talking about and writing about music together and individually for a collective eighty years in magazines like Smash Hits, Mojo and The Word and on radio and TV programmes like "Rock On", "Whistle Test" and VH-1. Over 13 years ago, when working on the late magazine The Word, they began producing podcasts. Some listeners have been kind enough to say these have been very special to them. Dr. Deep leads this session down the proverbial "trail of breadcrumbs" to reveal the lies at the core of their marriage. (This episode and other episodes are in the "Earwolf Presents" listings at this time but are originally in the "Stitcher Exclusive" category, but if you want access to what I presume is all of the show's episodes then you will need access to Stitcher Premium.)

Bubble
The show's description goes a little something like this: Welcome to Fairhaven, a literal Bubble of corporate utopia set amid the wild, goblin-infested Brush. The first scripted comedy series from Maximum Fun, Bubble was created by Jordan Morris (Jordan and Jesse Go), and tells the tale of a small band of monster killers struggling to make ends meet and find love in a nightmarish version of the gig economy. Tompkins, and many, many more. I clipped this snip from back in the before time - June of 2018 - their vert first installment entitled "Huntrs". Morgan, who is good at killing monsters, gets a new gig and a new partner.

And that's all I have for you in this episode. I do hope you find something that you enjoy or at least to be interesting enough to experience again. I've already got ideas for what I will clip for the next episode I bring you, but that isn't for a couple weeks in my timeframe so why even bring it up? Maybe it is the holiday season that is rapidly approaching, encroaching…whatever you prefer.

I think about time a LOT lately. That is to say, I consider how it can pass without notice sometimes, and every now and then something notable occurs which makes me stop and consider how fast life really seems to be happening. My parents just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with my brother and I and our spouses, and that too was over in an eyeblink. Now I am here writing about it, and in a moment I will be done writing about it…and soon I will read these words into a microphone, edit all the audio together, and create a presentation that you will experience in more-or-less a half an hour of your life.

Succotash Epi324: Debate, Argument, Brits & Smut

Damn! Late with an episode AGAIN! Hi, friend. Yes, It’s me, Marc Hershon, your every-other-weekly-co-host for Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. And double damn if I’m not dropping this Episode 324 a day late and a dollar short. To be honest, me and your co-host Tyson Saner are WAY more than a dollar short.

Just a reminder that we’re basically producing this show for the love of the Art that is Soundcasting. We still have no real sponsors, just that freeloading Henderson’s Pants outfit. If I Were You
Our first clip comes from a show that has just passed the 560 episode mark! It’s If I Were You, from HeadGum, and featuring hosts Jake Hurwitz and Amir Blumenfeld. Both these guys are all over HeadGum because they’ve been there since it started. This show, If I Were You, drops every Monday and features the host-ages offering advice in realms that they both are and are not qualified to speak on. They invite listeners to send in their own “sticky situations” as they put, and they will try to help find a solution.Our clip comes from their milestone Epi560, entitled Mile High Club, and their listener query gets them talking about UFOs and ghosts.

The Legal Geeks
This next clip is from not only a show I mentioned I was going to be on, namely The Legal Geeks, but it’s from the show I WAS on and, in fact, features me along with show host Joshua Gilliland and some other attorneys. He co-hosts the show with Jessica Mederson but she was traveling the week I was asked to be an “expert witness” along with a bunch of other legal eagles, including Gregory Pang and a cast of their regulars. The show’s entitled “Review of The She-Hulk: Attorney-at-Law – Episode 5” and, because my day job finds me in the world of branding, trademarks, and other such intellectual property, or “IP”, Josh invited me along to ring on some of the trademark issues that the Jessica Walters character (played by Tatiana Maslany) has to tangle with in that episode. Namely, She-Hulk gets sued for trademark infringement over the use of the She-Hulk name by one of her enemies.

Backstory on The Legal Geeks soundcast: These real lawyers, headed up by Josh and Jessica, sound off on legal issues faced by fictional characters – everything from the MCU to the Star Wars Universe. Not just on the soundcast, but they show up to places like ComicCon in San Diego and run mock trials based on situations that crop up in these TV shows, movies, comic books, and so forth. Definitely check ‘em out!

Off Menu
This next soundcast is where the “Brits” part of this week’s title comes from. It’s Off Menu, featuring a pair of British comedians, Ed Gamble and James Acaster. Each episode, they invite a guest into what they term their “magical restaurant” to choose their favorite starter (that’s an appetizer to us Yanks), main course, side dish, dessert, and drink. It’s all just a glorious excuse to deep dive into heady – and sometimes silly – convo with their guests. A recent episode featured the fantastic, amazing, and England’s national treasure Richard E. Grant. This clip goes form the silly to the sublime, as Richard slides into how his late wife’s last wish fueled his recently released memoir, A Pocketful of Happiness.

Pornomedy
Last show off the bench today is only so because of alphabetization. It’s a new soundcast, just a few episodes in, entitled Pornomedy. It’s hosted by a good friend of Succotash, Monica Hamburg, who has not only had a couple of soundcasts over the past bunch of years that we’ve been on, but was our special guest co-host WAY back on Episode 64 in July of 2013, almost 10 years ago. She sent in this clip of Pornomedy, along with a note from which I quote the following: “Hi Marc: I hope you are doing well! So... I started a new podcast recently. "Pornomedy" which explores the weird world of free porn sites: Absurd porn comments (as though any aren't!), terrible titles, baffling tags - and more. This time, hilarious Baltimore comedian Mike Moran joins me. We speak of "The Chair" (i.e. It-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named) - as well as a porn commenter with maximum game, the right time to rent a truck for your porn film - and much more! This is only the 3rd episode of this new podcast (though it's on the feed with all the other shows I've done) but I like it. I hope you will too! (Of course, as always, no pressure if it's not right for the show ,etc.) Not right for the show – pfft! Oh, Monica, you DO go on!
