Succotash Epi345 — Special Guest: Josh Barnes

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner welcoming you to this "Chats" episode of Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, now in the last vestiges of its 11th year bringing you now 345 episodes including this one.

Yes, this is Episode 345, which means that the last episode that dropped into our stream was episode 344 and THAT episode was also a Chats episode, hosted by show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon, with whom I share hosting duties with on an every-other-weekly basis. In Epi344, Mr. Hershon's guest was Josh Gilliland of The Legal Geeks soundcast, which, on their main webpage over at TheLegalGeeks.com is described as "The Legal Geeks, Jessica Mederson and Joshua Gilliland, are proud to be attorneys and geeks. Please enjoy their podcasts discussing everything from eDiscovery to Sci Fi and a lawyer's point of view on a universe of Geek culture."

Mr. Hershon and Mr. Gilliland had a pretty interesting discussion in that episode that I listened to about 75-80 percent of before I had to stop listening due to some Mandalorian spoilers that I really wish I hadn't heard but, oh well, that's going to happen occasionally when people discuss pop culture.

This week, as previously stated, is a "Chats" episode that features a fun conversation I had with comedian and musician Josh Barnes. We discuss many things including children's entertainment, fatherhood, musicals, horror movies, and conspiracy videos amongst other things including, but not limited to, Josh's first comedy special Petty Since '83, which you can find in audio form over at http://joshbarnescomedy.bandcamp.com or you can watch it up at http://watch.nextupcomedy.com Also catch his 2nd comedy special which I attended the filming of in late January of 2023 at the Savage Henry Comedy Club (whose large cast of performers and participants I have attempted to feature in various capacities over the recent years, here and there when I could, in clip form when those personalities have soundcasts.) My intention is to interview as many of the local comedians as I can in the coming year, and perhaps get back on stage myself, but that's just between you and me.

I really appreciate Mr. Barnes taking the time, as his schedule is pretty full.

This week's show is sponsored by our longtime, freeloading, FAKE sponsor Henderson's Pants and their stunning new Bivouac Briefs.

Warning: This interview contains spoilers for a few movies, including Lady in the Water, The Village, Signs, and Cabin Fever, as well as Muppets from Space.

Our next episode is 346 which will be helmed by Marc Hershon and I have no idea what he has in store for you...aside from the assumption that it will either be a "Clips" episode or a "Chats" episode... but even that can change.

By the time you hear this, I will have had my birthday already, and likely I will have already begun my hunt for clips, or perhaps another chat, that I will present to you in about 2 weeks from then...for Episode 347. ...and that's the best prediction I can make for the near future. Will there be new episodes as we make our way to our 12 year mark this coming April?  Most likely. Will we have an actual sponsor by then?  Who can say?

Will I be galloping toward 50?  With any luck. At any rate, you can go to www.tysonsaner.com to find easily clickable links to my other content including Anti Social Show, an entirely other soundcast I co-host with Hunter Block, "Tyson Saner: Gamer" a video podcast that I make for my YouTube channel, and some of the music that I've been making over the years.
Thank you for listening, be decent to each other, consider leavin a 5-star review of our program if you enjoy any part of what we provide for you at no additional cost to you, and...should someone happen to inquire, perhaps completely randomly, if you have heard anything good or interesting lately, and this program leaps to the forefront of your consciouness, mentioning us in that moment really helps us out. It's what we mean when we gently remind you to please pass the Succotash

Succotash Epi344 — Special Guest: Josh Gilliland

Howdy, soundcast aficionados! You must be a fan of soundcasts if you’re dropping in for yet another installment of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. Because that’s all we do around here is pay homage to soundcasts. We play clips from 'em, we talk about ‘em, and sometimes we talk to the people who are ON the soundcasts, like today.

But good deary me, I am getting ahead of myself. Myself being one Marc Hershon, your every-other-weekly host of Succotash, and this is Episode 344. We’re about 5 weeks away from hitting our 12 year anniversary of this show — can you feel the excitement, the electricity, in the air? Of course you can.

If you’d like to send me and co-host Tyson Saner a little congratulations or salutations message in the next couple of weeks so we can include in our 12th Anniversary Episode, we encourage that! The easiest way would probably be to kick out something in your socials to the attention of @SuccotashShow. You could also email us at either m-a-r-c@SuccotashShow.com or t-y-s-o-n@SuccotashShow.com. You can call into our Succotash and Runaway Truck Ramp Hotline at (818) 921-7212 and leave us a voice mail message. Or if you’re feeling particularly production-y, you can record something and upload it as an MP3 file to http://Hightail.com/u/Succotash. We’ll play or read everything that comes in. We haven’t set the actual date in April yet, but as long as your submission reaches us by the beginning of April, it’s in!

Let’s get back to the here and now. Or, rather, the last week and now. Tyson hosted Episode 343 and featured a Valentine’s Day slate of three soundcast clips, including Life is Short with Justin Long, CineNation, and High Low with Emrata. You can still avail yourself of those delectable tidbits wherever you normally get your soundcasts from or pop over to our homesite, SuccotashShow.com, which is also the home for our nearly 12 years of episode archives.

Which brings us up to present day and what I have in store for you, which is a guest. It’s likely no surprise if you were able to read the title for his week’s installment: Succcotash Epi344 w/Special Guest Josh Gilliland. A soundcaster and actual practicing attorney, Josh hosts The Legal Geeks soundcast, where he and Jessica Mederson, along with a rotating cast of other legal eagles tackle the important fictional cases of our time. Josh was a guest at one of our rare live shows, about 5 years back when we appeared as part of San Francisco Sketchfest. And he’s the brother of another friend of the show and past guest, Gabriel Diani. He’s also a Skipper in the Sea Scouts which is a kind of like Boy or Girl Scouts on the water, and we’ll talk about that as well.

This episode is sponsored by our long-running, long FAKE sponsor Henderson’s Pants and their bright n’ shiny Pedestrian Pants!

Thanks to Josh for dropping by, You can hear a lot more of him over at The Legal Geeks soundcast and you can read a lot more by him on his blog, Bow Tie Law.

Tyson Saner will be back in this very same soundcast feed next week with Episode 345 and until then, if someone you know is itching to find something new to listen to and a few choice samples might help them find their way, won’t you please pass the Succotash?

Succotash Epi343: A Valentine's Day Sampler of Clips

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner welcoming you to Episode 343 of Succotash, The Comedy Soundast Soundcast! Established 2011 with regular weekly updates since 2020. We've been able to do that here at Succotash mostly due to the fact that I share every-other-weekly hosting duties with show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon who brought you clips last week in episode 342, from the soundcasts Extra Nuggets, Hollywood Gold, The Downside, and also a recent episode of Monster Party on which Mr. Hershon was a guest. You can find last week's episode along with our entire archive of episodes over at www.succotashshow.com or, if you are currently listening to us or have downloaded us from any of the streaming/downloading platforms from which you could do so — namely, places like Apple and Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Amazon Music and many more…uh…that would work as well.

This week, I've got clips from the soundcasts known as Life is Short with Justin Long, CineNation and High Low with Emrata.

I've also decided to include a classic FAKE advertisement from our longtime FAKE sponsor who does not exist except on paper and in the hearts and minds of listeners. This episode will have posted on Valentine's Day, so I've chosen a special one that…well, you can decide how appropriate it is to the season once you hear it.

CLIPS

Life is Short with Justin Long
I clipped this soundcast previously for Epi273 which dropped mid-October back in 2021. From the show's description: "Is it just me or is time flying by? How do we make the most out of our short time here on Earth? That’s what we’re here to find out. I’m Justin Long and I’ve been an actor for most of my life, so I’m used to getting inside the heads of the characters I play. But now that I’m getting older (I’m 43 now, yikes), I want to peek inside the heads of real people to learn how they find meaning in life. I’m also very curious what their favorite snack food is, and what emoji they use most often — ya know, the REALLY important stuff. Every episode I’ll get personal with all kinds of people, from actors to musicians to deep thinkers who fascinate me. My brother, Christian, is on hand each episode to keep me honest, and occasionally remind me about some of the embarrassing things I’ve done over the years. Join us, or if you have more important things to do, that’s okay too — life is short!" I clipped the episode from January 31st, 2023 with Dave Franco (Somebody I Used to KNow)and an emoji, the type of which I will not reveal as it is indicative of a specific bit of information contained within each interview. Sorry for being so cryptic, I try to be spoiler-free in specific types of circumstances involving symbology. TMI? On the show, the guest and Justin talk about their mutual love of cats, how he got into acting and the benefits of working with his wife, Alison Brie.

CineNation
As described in Apple Podcast's version of a soundcast's liner notes: "The CineNation soundcast analyzes the histories and tropes of film genres and why we love them." The episode I've clipped is from February 2nd, 2023 - When Harry Met Sally (1989). For Episode 250, show hosts Brandon Sparks and Thomas Horton are starting their Rom-Com series with one of the best of all time. Listen as they discuss how When Harry Met Sally went from a basic idea to a classic of the genre.

High Low with EmRata
The show practically introduces itself, when you read its description online: "Hi, I’m EmRata, aka Emily Ratajkowski. Maybe you know me from my work as an actress or model, or maybe you’ve read my bestselling book, "My Body". I’m interested in marrying everything high and low brow by talking pop culture and happenings that may seem frivolous in a way that raises big questions. On this podcast, I’ll be talking everything from politics, philosophy, and feminism to sex, TikTok and relationships." Our clip hails from just a week ago, on February 6, 2023, and features guest Amber Rose, who - according to show notes - rose to prominence through several high profile relationships with famous rappers, but she has a whole lot more to say than gossip and rehash their history. On the show they discuss how she has reclaimed the labels “slut” and “bitch” through her event "Slut Walk", how she’s raising her sons to respect women, classism, feminism and racism, and what she wants to see happen with men (and women!) when it comes to fighting misogyny.

And that's where the clips run out, so welcome to the end of this week's episode. Hey, did you hear that a chunk of the sun "came off"? No, really…it did something like that. I only read the news about it today, and the source was a day old, so…we're still here as of one day later. This episode will have posted about three days from now if the usual set of circumstances has occurred and, the following week, Marc will be back with Episode #344 which I believe will be a "Chats" episode with guest Josh Gilliland, if I remember what was said in Epi342 correctly.

Y'know…between pandemics and natural disasters happening in this lifetime, at this point in time, I could really use a hug. Also, I just saw Encanto for the first time and that was quite an emotional roller coaster…so, yeah…the hug thing. Maybe you aren't the hugging sort…no worries, you do you.

Aside from all of that, the function of this show has alway been to provide the listener with a window into some listening options that they might otherwise never have known they had…So, I hope that I fulfilled that in a way you found interesting in any way, shape, or form, and that, as a result, you might listen again and/or suggest us to others as an option for them to listen to. We would really appreciate that. We do this out of love.

So once again, I've been Tyson Saner wishing you a Happy Valentine's Day, asking you consider visiting www.tysonsaner.com, thanking you for listening, imploring you to be decent to each other, and reminding you to please pass the Succotash!

Succotash Epi342: A February Foursome of Clips

Welcome to another installment of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast! This is Episode 342 and, each week, we’re edging ever closer to April 2023, which will mark the 12th Anniversary of this show. I’m your every-other-weekly host, Marc Hershon, and I want to thank everyone who has taken time out to Venmo us donations to help keep this show going!

Our grand total since first announcing that we’d be accepting funds through Venmo a couple months back is…zero. Zip. Zilch. Apparently you guys aren’t really fans of commercial-free content — and no, I don’t count our phony Henderson’s Pants ads — so we’ll stop beating the Venmo drum. Instead, this week starts my concerted effort to find this show some REAL paying sponsors. A lot of the shows that we feature clips from have them, so why shouldn’t we? It’s high time that me and our co-host, Tyson Saner, start to see some kind of return for cranking this thing out every week. (So, if you’re interested in sponsoring Succotash, just email our sales team at ads@succotashshow.com.)

The aforementioned Tyson was here last week with Epi341, a show entitled “Cartoons, Shakespeare & Tinseltown”, a show that included a trio of clips from The Bancroft Brothers Animation PodcastWilly Shakers, and The Hollywood Experience. You can still grab that handful of Succotash from your favorite soundcast distribution points, including Apple and Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Amazon Music, and so many others, not the least of which is our homesite, SuccotashShow.com. That’s also where our archive lives, with over 11 years of clips n’ chats.

I myself have a “February Foursome of Clips” in store for you in this episode. We’ll be hearing from Extra Nuggets, Hollywood Gold, and The Downside, as well as from a show that we’ve featured before, one of the hosts is not just a friend-of-Succotash but a close personal friend of mine, and that I have appeared on several times including just last week. It’s Monster Party and we had a great time talking about…well, you’ll hear it when you jack into the 'sode.

This week’s installment (until we can find some sponsors with some real money to bring to the table), is brought to you by Henderson’s Pants timely Parka Pants, just the stuff to keep your chilly getaway sticks from snapping off in the cold.

CLIPS

Monster Party
Let’s get this Succotash party started with what I was just talking about a moment ago – the Monster Party soundcast! The four gents behind this show came up with this idea when they were crashing in a hotel at the San Diego Comic Con a number of years ago. As they partied and got increasingly blotto, their discussion turned into a loud argument about what monster or sci-fi or superhero or action movie, TV show, or comic book was better than the others. Realizing this was a nerd idea sure to get them laid, the fab foursome — Matt Weinhold, Shawn Sheridan, Larry Strothe, and James Gonis — kicked off their show. I’ve had the pleasure of being a guest a number of times and just last week was the latest. Their topic: Superhero Obscura. Namely, digging up some of the most forgotten and unknown comic book heroes ever to don a cape. Since I was the guest of honor, I sliced out a snippet where I talked about the mysterious and forgotten…Captain Marvel! No, not that one. The other one. No, no, the OTHER one. Never mind. You’ll see…

Hollywood Gold
At a couple dozen episodes under her belts, the host of the Hollywood Gold soundcast, Daniela Taplin Lundberg — a movie producer in her own right — interviews other producers and filmmakers to help us look under the hood of some of the films we know and love. I grabbed a clip from an episode that dropped last month where she focued on the movie The Big Sick, written by Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, which was a fantastic, kind-of-surprise hit six years ago. SIX years ago? Yes. 2017. Crazy. Anyway, she caught up with her old friend and the director of the movie, Michael Showalter, to deep dive into how this movie got made. The clippage is about some of the casting of the film and the process of getting it down in the funny, touching, sweet style that he did.

Extra Nuggets
Even as the soundcast ocean continues to fill with thousands upon thousands of shows, I’m amazed at how inventive so many soundcast creators have gotten at finding that little niche, that undiscovered nugget – if you will – of a subject or fodder for a new soundcast. Nugget is exactly the right word for this next clip, which comes from a relatively new show.  So new, in fact, that they only have about a dozen episodes dropped at this point, going back to October of last year. The hosts are Dan Rubenstein and Adam Amin. Dan’s one of the brains behind the Solid Verbal Media soundcast network, and Adam is a sports announcer with Fox Sports. The hook to their show Extra Nuggets is to take categories from old Jeopardy shows and challenge each other to answer them. But it goes beyond trivia. They only tackle a couple of categories an episode because every answer leads into some extra nuggets of information behind the topic. On a recent drop, one topic was “Historic Planes”. See how much of this stuff you know…

The Downside
Our final clip for this episode takes a kind of cynical look at the world around us. Or at least around host Gianmarco Soresi. He’s a comedian and a “lifelong cynic”, according to the show’s description and it seems when he brings in a guest who’s not a stranger to cynicism, like the amazing droll Todd Barry, the level of cynicism goes up exponentially. Here the guys are talking about when Todd started out doing standup back in Miami.

Tyson Saner will be here in this same feed next week with Episode 343 and some entertainments for you. So grab yourself some of that. And, if by some chance you’re flying high over American soil, somehow having found yourself attached to a Chinese spy balloon, and an Air Force fighter jet scrambles by and the pilot yells out of the cockpit at Mach 2 “Have you heard anything good lately?”, won’t you please pass him the Succotash?

— Marc Hershon
