Succotash Shut-In Epi203: Flippin' Thru Clips

Welcome to Epi203 of Succotash Shut-In, the Soundcast Stimulus Package. I’m Marc Hershon, switch-off co-host with Tyson Saner, each of us taking every other week. That way we can bring you fresh Succotash every week as we do our best to ride out the pandemic lockdown together.

The aim of this season of the show is to bring you short snippets of a variety of comedy soundcasts – a kind of Whitman’s Sampler of funny – so you can then track the ones down that you like and grab their full shows. To make it even easier for your soundcast safari you can easily get to each show by clicking on it's title as it appears below.

I’ve decided to go with a kind of TV-themed rack of soundcasts to play for you durinig the half-hour we have together. We have Office Ladies; Fake Doctors, Real Friends; The Darkest Timeline, and Bonanas for Bonanza.

This episode of Succotash is sponsored by Henderson’s Pants new Foggy Bottom Britches and also Trumpoetry.com.

CLIPS

If you were a fan of TV's The Office – particularly the American version of Ricky Gervais’ genius mockumentary brainchild – or have thought about jumping in to fill up those long days and nights of sheltering in place, Office Ladies is the perfect “watch-along” soundcast. It’s hosted by Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, who played Pam Beesley and Angela Martin on the show. And it’s an episode-by-episode, one-for-one breakdown, of the entire run of the TV show, which was on from 2005 to 2013 on NBC.
One of the most recent shows tracked the season finale episode of season two, entitled “Casino Night”, which had been written by Steve Carell, who not just played but embodied Michael Scott, the boss. And they had a special guest for this episode – John Krasinski, who played Jim Halpert, who ends up marrying Pam in the show. In this clip, John and Jenna reminisce about when they auditioned together for The Office, which is when they first met.

BTW — If you haven’t caught John’s weekly YouTube SGN videos, which stands for Some Good News, you’re missing out on some great spirit-lifting news about what people are doing during the COVID-19 crisis to help others. Check out a recent installment…

Another episode-by-episode breakdown of a beloved TV sitcom is Fake Doctors, Real Friends. Hosted by Zack Braff and Donald Faison, who were two of the series’ regulars on Scrubs, which ran from 2001 to 2010 – most of it on NBC, but the last two seasons aired on ABC. If you somehow missed this show the first time around — it did debut almost 20 years ago — here’s a summary from IMDB.com: “Set in the fictional Sacred Heart hospital in California, John 'J.D.' Dorian makes his way through the overwhelming world of medicine, with the help of his best friend, his fellow rookie doctors, and the arrogant, but brilliant attending physician he views as his mentor.”
So Zach played J.D. and Donald his best friend, Christopher Turk. There are a lot of funny fantasy sequences in the show, which are mostly in J.D.’s brain. This clip is from a recent episode where series creator Bill Lawrence jumps in as their guest to talk about the show.

So our next clip, from The Darkest Timeline, is also TV-show-related but it’s not a “rewatch show”. The title comes from an episode of NBC’s Community, created by Dan Harmon (who has a couple of soundcasts out there, including Harmontown – a show so popular it spawned its own documentary) and where the plot of it was a look at the show’s characters in a comically grim, alternate reality. Two of the show’s stars – Joel McHale and Ken Jeong – became best friends and feuding enemies. They often take any opportunity if being interviewed alone to throw shade at the other. Not unlike the ongoing rivalry between Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, albeit with smaller paychecks.
Anyway, they’re currently Zooming together to bring this soundcast to us and it’s really more of a weekly update on the COVID-19 situation and the outlook for the future. Ken has been a doctor for many years, long before he became an actor, and Joel has been a comedian, long before he became an actor. And they’ve found a quirky mix in this show of being informative while trying to keep things as light as they can given the gravity of the current health situation.

This clip, however, is all for fun, as it’s from their Episode 9 which dropped recently and featured a Zoom call with pretty much the entire cast minus Chevy Chase, and including show creator Dan Harmon. For the record, that was Alison Brie, Danny Pudi, Dan Harmon, Donald Glover, Yvette Nicole Brown, Gillian Jacobs, and Jim Rash plus, of course, Joel and Ken. You won’t get that firepower every week but The Darkest Timeline is a a good listen and you can keep up on what’s happening, viruswise.

For our last clip we’re going to take a hard left away from the sitcoms that feature prominently in the three preceding segments. Although this last one is, for all intents and purposes, a “rewatch” show. I’m not even sure how to explain Bonanas for Bonanza without taking up this whole show but let’s try. First of all, I’m not mispronouncing the title – it IS BO-nanas for Bonanza. Not sure why.
As for the rest: Once upon a time, Andy Daly and Matt Gourley did a couple of seasons of Andy Daly’s Podcast Pilot Project over on Earwolf. (We clipped one of those pilots, Shut Up and Have Fun with Danny Mahoney, back in Epi85 of Succotash in 2014.) One of Andy’s characters from that group of pilot episodes was Dalton Wilcox, who billed himself as “The Poet Laureate of the West.” He also had a habit of hunting down and killing monsters such as werewolves and vampires.
Cut to present day Soundcastland where Any and Matt have created a rewatch show around Bonanza, a very popular TV Western that ran for 15 years and went off the air in 1973. 1973. Take that in for a minute. You can find a lot of it on YouTube and some other streaming services. Well, hilariously, with Andy playing Dalton Wilcox and Matt coming in as country music legend Mutt Taylor, along with comedian Maria Bamford along for the ride as Bonanza superfan Amy Sleeverson, this trio is attempting to get their audience through all 431 episodes of this long-defunct TV show. They often will have a guest riding shotgun and our clip, Episode 4, “The Piute War”, feature the hardest-working guest in soundcasting: Paul F. Tompkins, appearing as Dalton’s adversary, Russell Shine.

That’s going to do ‘er for Epi203 of Succotash Shut-In, the Soundcast Stimulus Package. Episode 204 will be coming up next week with my co-host-at-a-distance Tyson Saner. And coming up in the next few weeks from my side of the soundcast will likely be an interview with returning guest, improv and standup comedian extraordinaire Greg Proops, and a special Down Under edition of the show featuring clips from Australian-based soundcasts and co-hosted with old friend of Succotash Jason McNamara, aka “Jabs”, from Canberra, Australia.

But that’s in the future. For now, take care of yourself, maintain social distance, wear a mask when you go out – I don’t care what local governments are saying, just use your common sense, and if you want to help cheer someone up, please pass them the Succotash!

Succotash Shut-In Epi202: Quarantinin' With The Funny

Saluton! Esta me, Tyson Saner. And it seems like only a couple of weeks ago I was putting the finishing touches on Episode 200 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. and sending it off to executive producer Marc Hershon to be posted as the final episode before our much-ballyhooed hiatus.

Well, if you're listening to this…it means the hiatus is over.

If you listened to Episode 201, hosted by my now sorta social distancing co-host Marc Hershon, then you already knew that. If you haven't listened to Episode 201, yet, you still can. It's a shorter episode than Succotash is, traditionally, so it won't take very long. And it explains why it is shorter, and why we are back, and really has some great content that should help you, the listener, get into the swing of things for this new phase of the soundcast formerly known as Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, now known as Succotash Shut-In. Coming to you weekly with alternating hosts Marc Hershon and yours truly, the afore-mentioned Tyson Saner.

I've got clips from Second Run Movie Pod, You Need To See This, and Shenk. This episode is sponsored by Henderson's Pants new Breakaway Trousers, and by Trumpoetry.com. I know you're anxious to experience your now weekly dose of soundcast clips from the comedy world as it deals with the quarantine that everybody who doesn't want to die from COVID-19 is adhering to for the foreseeable future. So without further ado, it's clip time.

CLIPS

Featuring Kory Epps and Adam Shumaker, on the Second Run Movie Pod the two hosts talk about films they've seen and whether or not they'd give them a second look. At least I believe that's what the show's about. In this epi, Kory and Adam gotta go fast as they talk about Sonic the Hedgehog and Birds of Prey.
You can find Kory Epps at OnlyFans.com/KoryEpps. Those are the deets provided on the blog. And there's a little note that says that was the last episode before the quarantine lockdown before the coronavirus and they hope everyone is staying safe and healthy. We're trying, Kory!

With Lucé and Cozi, the description of the show on their homesite says "Join hosts Lucé Tomlin-Brenner and Cozi Orlen every week as they argue for one film you absolutely need to watch. They'll cover everything from lesser known arthouse indies to 'How did you miss this?' blockbusters." Each episode at least one of the hosts has seen and loved thge film and at least one has missed it. Then, with no spoilers, they'll convince they'll convince you to spend your precious time watching it. That's a great idea. The clip I've got for you is from an episode posted on April 20, 2020. The guest? None other than the one of the co-hosts on The Nooner Podcast on Kevin Smith's Smodcast Network, Cassandra Cardenas. (She's also been, by the way, a guest of Anti Social Show, another soundcast that I co-host, actually, with Hunter Block who was a guest of Succotash in our previous season, check that out sometime.) Anyway, Cassandra and Cozy talk to Lucy about the incredibly fun British comedy Spice World from 1997. If you'd like to support this soundcast, you can click over to Anchor.fm/YouNeedToSeeThis/support.

Comedian Sara Wineshenk interviews comedians, musicians and artists living in Los Angeles. Topics include fashion, cannabis and comedy. The clip is from the episode that posted April 29 2020. called "Weather Women, Lava Lamps, and Dream Cars", in which live, from quarantine, Sara sits down to answer some questions, specifically about the topics mentioned in the title AND her favorite type of cat.
Not only can you find Shenk on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher and Spotify, but you can email all fashion/guest-related questions to shenkpod@gmail.com.

WRAP-UP

And there it is. Episode 204, the second of Season 4 of Succotash Shut-In, The Soundcast Stimulus Package. Remember, if you go to SuccotashShow.com you can find all the social media and website info that will help you find these shows with very little effort on your part.

Of course, our archive of past episodes is there to just a few simple keystrokes and mouse clicks or taps on a mobile device brings you more of us and those we feature on this program. Tell them Succotash Shut-In sent ya – we'd appreciate it a great deal. Sharing is caring. And not only is it something we can safely do the distance. It's what we mean when we gently remind you to please pass the Succotash!

Succotash Shut-In, Epi201: Soundin' Off in Isolation

Thank you, Bill Heywatt. Holy cats! We’re back! After what may have been the shortest hiatus in soundcast history! Hello. Welcome. I’m Marc Hershon, this show’s original host, then executive producer, and now sort-of-co-host, for Season 4 of what we’re calling Succotash Shut-In, the Soundcast Stimulus Package.

First off, if you’re wondering what’s happened to host Tyson Saner, worry not. He and I have a little chat just a few minutes into the show to fill you in on what our plan is for this crazy, locked-down Season 4. And he will be back every other week – switching off with me, to bring you a fresh batch of Succotash – meaning clips from a wide variety of comedy soundcasts AND also some interviews – each and every week! That’s our plan, anyway. Tyson and I will be doing our part to help fan the flame of soundcasting during these uncertain times, by giving you a place to listen in on a few minutes of some specially curated content. Then it’s up to you to decide if you want to got start downloading full episodes of those shows for your listening enjoyment.

You can see how we do and rate us appropriately on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, the Laughable app, and anywhere else fine soundcasts are streamed and or downloaded.

Let me tell you what soundcasts we’ll be featuring this episode. We’ve got clips from The Ron Burgundy Podcast, Shooters Gotta Shoot, The Cannon Canon, and the Monster Party soundcast. Plus, somewhere in the middle of all that, I have a quick revisit with Phil Leirness, co-host of the Chillpak Hollywood Hour! (If you’re thinking you just heard from Phil, you’re right – he was the last guest of the last episode of the previous season of Succotash.)

This episode is also sponsored by Henderson’s Pants TurtleNeck® Slacks.

THE CLIPS

Will Ferrell is now into his second season reprising the role of Ron Burgundy, made famous from the Anchorman movies, in an iHeart Radio production called The Ron Burgundy Podcast. Assisted by his ever-suffering…assistant Carolina Barlow, it seems that Ron may never quite realize that this isn’t actually a radio show. He has frequently has guests on — some real, some fictional — but in a recent episode entitled “From Lassie to Jesus”, he and Carolina have the studio to themselves and Ron is set to tell us about the top 10 people he’d like to meet in heaven. Our clip’s from the top of the show, just because I find Ferrell so funny before he even gets to the premise of the show.

Shooters Gotta Shoot soundcast features comedian Erica Spera and businesswoman Molly DeMellier – both former NCAA athletes who know how to get what they want except, according to the show’s official website, when it comes to men. Telling it like it is, with a generous dollop of humor thrown in, they explore the complicated, frustrating and bizarre realities of dating as headstrong, twenty-something women in New York City. And they have guests! Recently, that included comedian Francis Ellis, whom you can also catch on soundcasts Barstool Sports and BroBible, who came on to discuss the 5 “love languages”. In this clip they’re talking about rings.

Gotta brand new soundcast for you by a couple of UCB’ers, Frank Garcia-Hejl and Geoff Garlock, called The Cannon Canon. No, it’s not about the TV series Cannon, featuring William Conrad as a generously-proportioned PI that ran from 1971-76. Instead, these guys are going to deconstruct every movie that was produced by Cannon Films. They kicked it off with a deep dive into Death Wish II, starring Charles Bronson, and along for the ride is actor pal Noah Segan. Here’s a clip where they get into some of the nit and the grit of the movie. (Considering there are at least 46 more films in the Cannon Canon, these guys are going to be kept busy for about a year if they drop one episode a week.)

We round out this first episode of our 4th season of Succotash with not just a personal favorite, but one of the only soundcasts around that actually likes having me on as a guest: Monster Party! Featuring a quartet of hosts, including comedian, writer, longtime friend of the ‘Tash and a personal pal o’ mine, Matt Weinhold, as well Shawn Sheridan, Larry Strothe, and James Gonis, fine gentlemen all. This show was borne of the hosts’ love for all things horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and all around nerdtastical, conceived when they sat around drinking in a shared hotel room at the San Diego Comic Con many years ago. It’s that same kind of discussion, but in soundcast form. Episodes can run two or three hours, usually with guest, where they proceed to drink and discuss movies and TV shows around various theme. I recently was invited back for my second visit, this time via Zoom thanks to COVID-19, and the theme was Hexes, Spells, and Curses. Here’s how part of that went…

ADIOS

And that’s it. The first episode of the new season of Succotash Shut-In is complete. Here’s hoping you enjoy the new shorter format, and that you’ll take the time to check out some (if not all) the soundcasts we sampled for you. And same as before, if you ARE a comedy soundcaster and would like us to feature a clip from your show, you can take the initiative and upload a 3 to 5 minute swatch of your program directly to us by going to hightail.com/u/Succotash.

We’re looking for a nice sponsor or two to help us offset the costs of production and streaming Succotash so if you know of anyone or ARE anyone who is interested, please contact me directly at m-a-r-c@SuccotashShow.com. We will also likely be putting our PayPal donation button back up soon, a link to our Succotashery for merch, and maybe even a Patreon page.

In lieu of donations, and until we meet again, I will remind you to tell your friends about us by simply passing the Succotash! Good-bye.

Succotash Chats Epi200: Headin' to Hiatusland…For Now

Saluton. Estas mi, Tyson Saner. I'll be your host for this Final Episode of Season 3 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. If you've not been listening to the previous episodes then you might be unaware that this is also the final episode before our hiatus…but more on that later. This also happens to be our 200th episode (hold for applause) and what a full episode I've got for you this time.

It's a Succotash Chats episode and I'm joined by producer, director, violence prevention specialist, friend of Succotash and one-half of the team that hosts Chillpak Hollyood HourPhil Leirness. Mr. Leirness, along with Dean Haglund of TV's The X-Files and The Lone Gunman, has been creating and publishing episodes of CHH since 2007. They've always been supportive of this show, which itself has been around for your listening pleasure since 2011.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour, to me at least, has always seemed like a big brother of sorts to Succotash…not in any insidious way, of course. There used to be a lot more crossover between Succotash and Chillpak in those early days.

In addition to my chat with Mr. Leirness I've received some special audio sent in by a few soundcaster supporters of Succotash whose identities I will keep a surprise for now. There's at least one surprise I don't even want to tease at the beginning here…suffice to say it's a very pleasant surprise for listeners and this host alike. All will become clear eventually. And this hiatus-adjacent Epi200 is brought to you by none other than our longtime, non-paying sponsor: Henderson's Pants and their new Bicentennial Pants.

Incidentally, it't not to late to purch some merch - the Succotashery remains open during our hiatus, giving you the chance to pick up some gear that's sure to become collectors' items one of these days. Just click over to https://www.cafepress.com/succotashshow to see our selection.

Finally, I'll mention that after my discussion with Phil I've got a bonus chat featuring none other than the original host and current executive producer of Succotash, Marc Hershon, who discusses the past and possible futures of the program with me and sends us off in style…or something like that. No, I like that: In style!

But first…some Durst

Before we begin I wanted to share some news with you regarding our most frequent contributor and friend of the show, raging moderate Will Durst. As regular listeners of this soundcast know, Mr. Durst suffered a stroke in October of last year. I've been holding on to the remaining Bursts o' Durst I received and spreading them out over time so as to have at least one in every episode until the hiatus. Because, somehow it might not feel like an episode of Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, without a Burst o' Durst.

In Conclusion

I really don't know what else to add at this point. It's been a fun ride over these last nine years since the show began…and eight years of my involvement. I feel like going on too much at this point might be gratuitous.

Mostly I'd just like to thank everyone here at Succotash for making the show what it has been throughout the years…Scott Carvey's theme music, Bill Heywatt's mellifluous announcing, Henderson's Pants and TrumPoetry.com's fake sponsorship, all the soundcasters who had interesting ideas that they took the time to record and publish so that they might one day be listened to by Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, and anyone else who might might be in search of something to listen to…and, of course, Marc Hershon's creation of the show in the first place.

Mostly, I'd like to thank YOU, the listener, for taking the time to make Succotash part of your listening life…even if it you're only listening to this episode…well, of course you are, you wouldn't be able to hear this otherwise.

So, for Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, I've been Tyson Saner saying farewell and gxis poste, and reminding you that we've got at least 200 episodes in the archive now so if you wouldn't mind terribly, I'd like very much to remind you to Please, Pass The Succotash.

Succotash Clips Epi199: Penultimatin' Before We GoGo

Saluton, estas mi…Tyson Saner! I will be your host for the duration of this penultimate episode of Succotash, the comedy soundcast soundcast, and as you may or may not know, I've been combing the internet far and wide, more or less, to bring you a few tastes of comedy soundcasting to your hungry-hungry ear-hippos for a few years now.

You are about to hear what is likely to be the last typical "clips - style" version of Succotash for the foreseeable future but don't dismay…this coming break is being called a "hiatus" because of the temporary nature that the term implies. The most likely scenario is that the show will return in some form or another…perhaps exactly the same form as you are about to hear…perhaps not, who can say?

And while that question hangs in the air could I tempt you with some clippage? I've got clips from Games for the End of the World, Refried Reviews, Wisecrackin' With Winter, Knowing: Robin Williams, Pajama Pants and Piecing It Together Podcast.

I've also got another reading from our 100% fake sponsor with a 100% real website "TrumPoetry.com" and it wouldn't feel like an episode of Succotash without at least one Burst O' Durst from raging moderate Will Durst, who is still recovering from having suffered a stroke last October (of 2019 to those of you listening in the far-off future…or even just 2021 really.)

I'd also like to point out that one of my favorite things to do on this show as i've been hosting is to try to the best of my ability to read the episode descriptions exactly as written with the exception of links or commercials or promo codes. I look at it this way. A soundcast is something that is unlikely to be heard as the way you first experience it…unless you have friends who play podcasts as entertainment for each other to enjoy and someone hears it by accident, you generally will intersect with its description first…especially on iTunes or Stitcher or Soundcloud where you can read about a show before you decide to listen to it. So…if you are taking the time to write what is basically your "HEY, Listen to me!" commercial for your show, then I'm going to honor that time someone took to try to describe what you would potentially be about to listen to. Minus non-episode-or-show-descriptive text as previously mentioned.

I have to write some of these things myself and I often wonder what those words I write to describe the nonsense I get up to would sound like if someone other than me spoke them aloud.

Anyway, on with the show! Thank you for listening.

CLIPS

Games for the End of the World
What game would you save if you could pick just one? Which character would you choose to protect you in the apocalypse? The show is hosted by Tom Deacon and the section of conversation I've selected for you is from the episode entitled: "Jane Douglas: Role Playing Games, World of Warcraft and tricking her mum to get her dad a PS1 for Father's Day."

Refried Reviews
Whether it's deconstructing a classic, or autopsying a flop, we re-watch movies so you don't have to. From the Podcast Graveyard comes Refried Reviews, which last dropped a new epi on July 6, 2017 - but who knows? In the world of soundcasting, this could just be a protracted hiatus… Our clip is from their second ever episode, posted November 21st, 2013. Host J.P. Cutter, along with co-host John Veron, stumbles through the plot synopsis of his pick, Rian Johnson's film Looper (2012) Looper.

Knowing: Robin Williams
Chances are Robin Williams has made you laugh, cry -- or cry laughing! -- at least once in your lifetime. From sweaty standup riffs to sitcom mayhem as Mork from Ork, to a powerful Oscar-winning performance in Good Will Hunting, Robin was an artist who was constantly pushing his craft. In this limited series, New York Times reporter Dave Itzkoff and host Kristy Westgard share never-before-heard interviews and thoughtful analysis to celebrate the life and legacy of a comedic genius. Our clips is from the episode posted October 27th, 2019 entitled "The Comet".

Wisecrackin' with Winter
Mike Winter and co-host Mitchell Haugerud sit down with their guests to talk news, sports, politics, and anything else they can fill his show with. You will enjoy the endless banter, laugh your ass off, and maybe learn something new… The clip we're featuring is from their epi that dropped just last month, on January 28th, 2020, entitled "Name That Hospital Bill Amount", in which contestants Emma and Paul guess the amounts of different line items for a three-day hospitalization. No matter all the arguments we might have, every American can agree that health care in America is about the best bargain on the planet.

Piecing It Together Podcast
This podcast about movies and the movies that inspired them has host David Rosen, and returning co-host David Quinones figuring out what the clear (and not so clear) influences were that make up the movies we love. Our featured clip is from the episode titled "Guava Island" from April 16th, 2019, the semi-feature from Childish Gambino's Donald Glover.

Pajama Pants
Not to be confused with the Pajama Pants offering from our longtime sponsor Henderson's Pants, this is a soundcast by Robert Iler and Kassem G., along with special guest Jamie-Lynn Sigler, discussing a whole lot of nothing but everything at the same time…in their pajama pants. Our clip is from January of this year, an episode where Dr. Drew joins the crew and weighs in on gender reveal parties, being a good listener, and what's wrong with Rob.

Yes, it's the end of the show again. Here we are together and thank you for spending time with us. You know…I wouldn't describe the overall experience of putting together a show like Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, as being particularly difficult. I enjoy listening to soundcasts a great deal so that's no fuss, I'd be doing that anyway because I enjoy hearing other people's conversations more than I ever realized I would.

I'm not the type to eavesdrop in general because people don't often like it when they find out you've been doing that…but with a soundcast they invite you to listen…and sometimes it's the only way you might have exposure to some very creative minds that exist out there in the world.

I really enjoy the idea of being able to share parts of those conversations with you, I enjoy the writing, recording and editing of the episodes…all of that is not what I would necessarily call "easy" but it's certainly not what I would call "difficult". No, the difficult part has always been this part…saying "goodbye". I mean I could just keep it simple…I could just say "Goodbye" and cue the music…I just don't think it would be right to do so.

And now that we are so near the end of our run - at least until the hiatus is over - I'm reminded of all the kindness that has been shown to this program over the years…and how a relatively unknown format such as the podcast - perhaps permanently rebranded as a "soundcast" one day - has become so widely used throughout the world as a way to archive conversations and communicate to anyone interested in listening.

Thank you all for your interest, it means the world to us here at Succotash…so, for Marc Hershon, Joe Paulino, Will Durst, Scott Carvey, and Bill Heywatt I'd like to wish you nothing but happiness in your lives and thank you for sharing us with others, for that is what we mean when we gently remind you to Please, Pass The Succotash.

Succotash Clips Epi198: Clippin' in the New Year!

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner…your host for the duration of this penultimate-adjacent episode of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. I'm giving you a short intro today because I've got more important things to share with you than the insane ramblings of a madman attempting to disguise itself as coherent soundcast hosting.

Of the clips I've got, three of them were sent in to me and I appreciate that a great deal! They are Assisting from Michael McClure, Dare Daniel from Daniel Barnes and Corky McDonnell, and a clip from the good folks over at Strange Times whose lineup has had an addition as of late. I also managed to scare up a few soundcast clips of my own somehow…four, in fact. I've got clips from Mindfudge Comedy Podcast, NERD U, Ghosted Hunters and The History of Standup. That makes seven clips in total. Think of it as a little extra stuffing in your bird…or in your stocking…or whatever it is that you might stuff and eat…or hang above your fireplace…

In addition to clips I've got selected readings from our 100% fake sponsor with a 100% real website: TrumPoetry.com  And welcome back to our other longtime sponsor Henderson's Pants with their holiday special trouser: Santa Pants!

What was that I was saying about a short intro? Sorry about that, I'll make it a New Year's resolution or something… Let's get to the show because I've got a pretty serious update for you.

--

By now, many of you have likely heard or read that on October 7, 2019, as reported in an article by Sam Whiting in The "Datebook" section of The San Francisco Chronicle dated November 26th of 2019, nationally known political comedian and contributor of our "Bust O' Durst" segment Will Durst suffered a stroke and, as the article's title points out, "cancels comedy shows for the first time in 30 years". (You can read the piece online here.)

All of us here at Succotash are pulling for Durst to make a full recovery. I fyou wish to write him a get well card, you can address it to:

Will Durst
PO Box 225126
San Francisco CA 94122

We actually have several Bursts O' Durst that we haven't featured yet, and we will play two of them this episode and release the remainder in the two installments of our soundcast that remain before our upcoming hiatus.

CLIPS

Dare Daniel
This clip comes to us directly (via our http://hightail.com/u/Succotash site) from an old friend of Succotash, Corky Kneivel, and is from his relatively new soundcast Dare Daniel, hosted by himself and film critic Daniel Barnes. Corky sez: "Dare Daniel Podcast is a comedy movie review show hosted by 1 film critic and 1 comic. We take listener dares of the worst movies ever & review/recap them. This clip is from the 2019 film The Fanatic starring John Travolta as Moose and directed by Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit."

Mindfudge Comedy Podcast
Mindfudge is a weekly show hosted by three funny guys from Houston, Texas. Each week, either Justin, George, or Andy will bring a new theme to the table and it will be discussed at length, and then incorporated into the show segments — segments such as "Mind Melters", "Hot Fudge", and "Ask The Nuts". Our clip is from Epi 64 posted August 2, 2019, entitled "Bad Words", and the clip features a game called "Shakespearean Insults".

Ghosted Hunters
"Ghosting" is a recent epidemic in the dating world where someone leaves a relationship by simply vanishing from the other person's life. Comedian Ariel Kashanchi and her sidekick, Erin Darling, help the victims of these heinous love crimes get closure. This clip is from an episode entitled: "Kicking it with Koechner", where Erin and Ariel try to harness their sexual energy by doing a week-long experiment on sexual transmutation. They are joined by actor and comedian David Koechner (The Office, Anchorman) who weighs in on the saga of Chris and Kandi. (Speaking of getting ghosted, there has not been an episode of "Ghosted Hunters" since the release of this episode from October of 2018…but shows have been known to go on hiatus… )

NERD U

A weekly roundup of Nerdy News, NERD U is hosted by Umnia El-Neil and is about the movies and TV shows running Pop Culture. In this clip, Umnia sings the praises of Plan B Entertainment, the production company founded by Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, the late Brad Grey, and their contributions to film and film history.

The History of Standup
Comedian, professor, and longtime friend of Succotash Wayne Federman (check out our interviews with him in Episodes 116A, 123, 128, and 146), has spent his life studying the art and history of standup comedy. Join him and fellow student, Andrew Steven, as they look back at some of standup's most interesting moments, places, and people. Our clip is from a bonus episodes this past November 20th, 2018, with Demetri Martin and Ian Abramson, discussing comedy both recent and ancient – with fascinating and funny results.

Assisting
Host Michael McClure pretends to be the assistant to a Hollywood celebrity and calls real businesses in order to get stuff done on behalf of his "boss". This clip is from the premier episode clip, which dropped August 20th, 2019, entitled "Mr. Forrester Would Like to Be Honored With a Key to the City of Los Angeles".

Strange Times Podcast
Our clip from the Strange Times Podcast was submitted directly by the show's co-host and producer, super longtime friend of the 'Tash Davian Dent. They've been leaning into improv on the show lately, with newcomer co-host Dom Risk joining Davian and Kat Sorens, and in recent Epi 325 the lads take a shot at writing a film script.

There it is, another show and, in this case, the last episode of 2019, that is. There are just TWO episodes left before we go on hiatus and they are going to hear the light of day when the year is new and the 20's are two.…I don't have a great deal of faith that that will catch on as a saying but one can dream…and one will….presumably of "Sugar Plums" around this time of year.

Thank you so much for spending time with us whenever it is you listen. We appreciate it more than it is possible to express although I will still try. Remember, when you share us with others you are also sharing bits of other soundcasts that other people often have put a great deal of work into. Sometimes those other people are the people who edit those soundcasts for the personalities who "appear" in them… and I salute everyone who has to do that particular task…So, from myself, Marc Hershon, Bill Heywatt, Joe Paulino, Will Durst, and Scott Carvey…and ALL of our friends and family who and wherever they may be or might have been, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Haunukkah, Kwanzaa and whatever else people celebrate that I am not yet worldy enough to know of…oh yeah, Festivus!!!…anyway, enjoy it as much as you can and if you are of a mind to,  please…Pass The Succotash!

Succotash Clips Epi197: Scarin' Up Some Clippage

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner, your host, and that means you are my parasite...and we have a symbiotic relationship, don't we? Yup, that sounds as stupid out loud as it looks on paper...or on the screen of a computer or device. It's early in the morning at the moment as I am writing this and I wonder how many other soundcasters are working on their soundcasts right now instead of sleeping or fishing or doing a paper route (if those things still exist – I know I had a few of them "back in the day")

And is route pronounced to rhyme with "gout" or "boot"? It's probably either depending on where you are from or what you grew up hearing. Also, is "either" pronounced to rhyme with "breather" or "hi there"? I imagine the same scenario applies as before with the word "route".

Either (or either) way, your route (or route) has led you here to us at Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast and I am grateful for that.

Welcome. I'm sorry this episode was a bit late. I usually aim for release on Fridays but I have only 1-3 nights per week I can work on the show and last week we had a power outage inflicted on us by Pacific Gas and Electric or PG&E as we say out here. Yes, I said "inflicted" because it was purposely done by the company to help prevent fires during a windstorm we were having in California.

There are folks who are probably still without power 5 days on from the event and I consider myself fortunate that it was only slightly more than 24 hours with no power in my proverbial neck of the woods.

Anyway, I've managed to put together some semblance of a show for you...And, in this episode I've got clips from "Stuff You Should Know", "Mostly Swinging", "Two Old Queens", "The Margaret Cho", "How Did This Get Played" and "Athletico Mince".

I've also got selected reading from our 100% FAKE SPONSOR with a 100% real website that is TrumPoetry.com and a special presentation of so many of our Burst O' Durst segments from political humorist and Raging Moderate Will Durst that I'm calling it our Block O' Durst.

SO... without further yammering from me, let's get to the content created by people far more talented than I.

CLIPS

Stuff You Should Know
Hosted by Josh Clark and Charles W. "Chuck" Bryant, if you've ever wanted to know about champagne, satanism, the Stonewall Uprising, chaos theory, LSD, El Nino, true crime and Rosa Parks then look no further. Josh and Chuck have you covered. Our clip is from the episode from September 5th, 2019: What's the deal with MSG?

Mostly Swinging
There really isn't a description for this show on its page but from listening to the first episode I can say that Jazz and Jazz standards are discussed and recordings of performances of Jazz standards are played in the episode. The first song played as a segment in the first episode is "Blue Skies" by Irving Berlin, sung by Don Most who has loved music that swings from a very young age and who's album of music - also titled "Mostly Swinging" - can be found on iTunes. Ethan Dettenmaier of Combat Radio who founded BrigadeRadioOne.org is the co-host of this episode.

Two Old Queens
They're old! They're queens! There's two of them! It's Two Old Queens! Join Mark Rennie and John Flynn as they search for the gayest movie ever made, using a byzantine ranking system, their own hard opinions, and some inevitable controversies from a stacked lineup of guests to come! Our clip is from September 18, 2019: Beetlejuice with Niccole Thurman, wherein the Group discusses their hunt for "The Gayest Movie Ever" and the "Top 5" they've come up with so far...

How Did This Get Played?
Heather Anne Campbell and Nick Wiger love video games. Together, they're playing the very worst and weirdest games ever made with their funniest friends to get down to this fundamental question: How Did This Get Played? The clip we share is from August of this year entitled "Night Trap with Christine Nangle".

Athletico Mince
This soundcast, featuring hosts Bob Mortimer and Andy Dawson, was recommended by longtime FOS (Friend Of Succotash) Davian Dent of the soundcasts Strange Times and The Bitter Sound. OUr clip is pulled from their Epi85, in which Peter makes a hospital visit, Mark invites Steve 'round, they discuss biscuit etiquette, Roy launches a new game, Dyche motivates, and there is a new Crime Files.

The Margaret Cho
Through Margaret Cho's iconic work in comedy, fashion, music, and activism, she's developed deep, lasting friendships with - well - a bunch of famous people, while never losing her desire to search for and support the next big thing. Our featured clip is from the October 7th episode just a few weeks ago. Margaret talks with managing editor of Yahoo! music, Lyndsey Parker. Although the clip itself features an excerpt from Margaret's interview with Ronald McDonkey.

Well, there it is. Another show gone and here we are together at the end of it. Will you be here at the end of show 200 to say "goodbye" to us for a while? Tweet us at @succotashshow with your answer. I'm serious. Also seriously, anything can happen between now and episode 200. We could get a real, paying sponsor for instance. A soundcaster can dream, can't he? In the meantime, hug your loved ones because, as Kanye West and Adam Levine said:

"Nothin's ever promised tomorrow today
And I heard 'em say (nothin's ever promised tomorrow today) but we'll find a way
(And nothing lasts forever but be honest babe, it hurts but it may be the only way)"

So, until the next episode this has been Tyson Saner ,asking on behalf of Marc Hershon, Bill Heywatt, Joe Paulino, Will Durst, and Scott Carvey, if you enjoy this program and the ones that came before it, please share it with others. Perhaps by way of leaving a review on iTunes or Apple podcasts...or Stitcher...or anywhere you can leave a review would be appreciated... also, retweeting our links on Twitter is a big help and would be much appreciated.

Those are just some of the ways you can show your support of us in a way that doesn't cost you a dime, and it's at least partially what we mean when we ask you to (Please) Pass The Succotash.
