Succotash Shut-In Epi229: Hitchin' with Dana Carvey

Welcome, listener, to Epi229 of Succotash Shut-In, the Soundcast Stimulus Package! I am your every-other-weekly host, Marc Hershon, and I switch off this vaunted position with the inimitable Tyson Saner. For this episode, I am once again pushing the mounting stack of clips I’ve gathered off to the side for a second week in a row in order to welcome back a favorite guest of the show as well as a beloved talent from television, film, and the comedy stage — none other that Dana Carvey. Whether you know him from his tenure on Saturday Night Live with characters like The Church Lady, Hans & Franz, or Garth from Wayne’s World, his standup specials, his short-lived self-titled sketch show on ABC, he remains one of the funniest, most potent comic minds of the last 3 or 4 generations.

And, as luck would have it, we have him as our guest coming up in a just a moment. Now, I didn’t get him in a studio or even in a nice quiet place to chat, or even on a Zoom call. What you’re going to hear is a casual conversation that I recorded over Skype via Dana’s cell phone as he was driving this past Monday afternoon down California Interstate 5 from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

As often happens on that stretch that I so lovingly have referred to over the years as The Kessel Run, his cell signal dipped out between transmission towers so we lost a few minutes. You’ll know when that happens because I have inserted a commercial from our longtime fake sponsor, Henderson’s Pants. Last week on Epi227, Marc interviewed comedian, author, and soundcaster Dylan Brody whose soundcast - called Dylan Brody's Neighbor's Couch Revisited - which he shares with Darren Staley - had both myself and Marc on as  guests. Marc's most recent show featured a fascinating conversation with Mr. Brody and I urge you to listen to it...not necessarily now but soon...of course that is entirely up to you. It's one of the joys of soundcasts, or "podcasts" as some people still refer to them: the freedom to listen whenever you want on whatever medium you prefer to listen to your downloaded or streaming content.

Those are the clips of this week's show, complete with homesite and Twitter links where applicable. I do hope we are a pleasant way to pass the time. This year has been…interesting. Not in a good way, mind you, but in that "May you live in interesting times" kind-of way. I hope you found the content interesting in a good way. I hope that you seek out the soundcasts presented in this episode to listen to more episodes…or perhaps you will be distracted by a soundcast on your way to find these soundcasts. I'd say it's difficult to predict but prediction is the easy part…I'd just have to change the "perhaps" part to "I predict" and then, at some point, it becomes true…like how at some point COVID-19 will go away.

That's not innacurate ultimately but it shouldn't be the governing factor of a society's choices about being cautious with the health of themselves or others. Everything, including us, will eventually "go away"…some of us would rather not be taken out by a virus that one could have taken more steps to avoid…Well, you probably already know this or have heard this type of thing before…unless this is so far in the future that…ugh, you know what? I'm exhausted. Election week has been a real stress test. I appreciate your listening.

Be decent to each other, wear a mask when it can mean the difference between life and homicide thru negligence, and while we are hopefully rebuilding the relatively sane society that our children desperately need, if you would like to share this form of entertainment with others we would appreciate it greater that you can ever know. And Darren and Dylan had us – Tyson and me – on DylanBrody’s Neighbor’s Couch Revisited not too long ago. But this will be the first full-on, mano y mano, interview that I’ve had with him. What I love about it, and I even mention this in the course of our conversation, is that I thought the thrust of our chat was going to be one thing, and it turns out to be several other wonderful things instead.

Succotash Shut-In Epi225: Scarin’ Up Spooky Clips

I am Marc Hershon, creator, executive producer, and co-host of Succotash Shut-In, The Soundcast Stimulus Package, designed to up your weekly dosage of comedy soundcast intake by several clips each episode. 

Last week in Episode 224 my esteemed co-host and soundcast practitioner Tyson Saner, prescribed a three-clip flight of comedy shows, including Rough Giraffe, Still Loading, and The Dark Weeb. In addition, we have a clip uploaded to us from a fellow comedy soundcaster, Amanda Welzein, producer and host of Dead Waves, which falls squarely into the theme this week just by chance. Or, once we got her submission, I moved the theme I was going to do, which was “Podcast Bloopers”, to a later show. You decide which came first.

Dead Waves
Since our soundcaster-submitted clip from Dead Waves actually DID give me the idea for our “Scarin’ Up Spooky clips” theme, we kick it off with that one. Here’s the note that was sent in with the snippet, “Good afternoon, Marc, I hope this isn't too forward, but I've been trying to submit a clip of my podcast to you using Hightail, and it just stalls out after a couple of minutes. Our friends over at Jock Doc Podcast told us about your show, and I think it's really cool how inclusive you are of all types of comedy podcasts. With all of the podcasts out there it's easy to get lost in the shuffle, so for you to carve out a space to mention some of us hidden gems is super appreciated. Thank you for your time. Stay healthy, stay safe. Amanda Welzein - Producer, Host, 100% That Witch, Dead Waves: An Improvised Paranormal Podcast” Well, that darned nice of the Jock Doc folks to say such nice things. Amanda didn’t include any set up for this clip, although I see it is from their Epi236, it’s entitled “Anything for ‘Loaf”, and it features Amanda, her co-host Ryan Fuhst and guest Tanja Rowland.

The Boogie Monster
Our next clip is from The Boogie Monster, hosted by comedians Kyle Kinane and Dave Stone. I am a bit ashamed, in that I had never heard of this show before. I definitely know who Kyle and Dave are, but the fact is that there have been 206 episodes of The Bookie Monster! This clip is from the most recent show, in which the hosts tackle – for the first time in all those ‘sodes, werewolves!

Ghoul Intentions
That brings us to our next clip from another spooktacular show, called Ghoul Intentions. This one is a pretty unique offering. It’s hosted by a couple of voiceover talent folks. Jamie Marchi. who is the voice of Ellie in the Borderlands II video game, as well as bunch of other work, and J. Michael Tatum, another Borderlands II alum – he did the voice of Sir Hammerlock. If the episode I clipped this from is any indication, each show opens with a spooky tale voiced by one or the other, or both of the hosts. And then they go into a chat mode where they share creepy things from the news, culture, and the world. Our featured snippet is from Epi102, entitled “A Bag of Bones”, and the hosts talk about stuff made from skin and bones. That is human skin and human bones. Michael is talking about ossuaries, places that are made to house piles and piles of bones…

Spoop Hour

The logline for this next show on Apple Podcasts reads, “Spoop Hour is a paranormal comedy podcast hosted by two Halloweenies, Courtney and Sasha. Each week, we take a look at a different creepy topic like ghosts, cryptids, or anything that goes bump in the night. Get spooped!” I guess “spoop” is a portmanteau for “spook” and “poop”, and the hosts definitely like to laugh and cram a lot of stuff into their shows. Our clip is from the episode entitled, “What Happened to Fritz?” that dropped on October 13^th – just last week – and concerns the haunting of Alma Fielding.

This Paranormal Life
Our last clip for this episode is from a show out of London, England, called, This Paranormal Life. Once again, the blurb from their homesite – which seems to be SoundCloud – really says it all.: “From punching Bigfoot to hunting Ancient Aliens - Every Tuesday, Rory Powers and Kit Grier investigate a different paranormal case and find the truth inside the mystery.” For this clip, I went back to August 25^th of this year, mainly because the title caught my eye: “The Hooded Figures of Ballyboley Forest.” And this clip actually teases a bit of the story of those very hooded figures. 

So those are some early Halloween treats to put in your bag. Or ears. I wanted to get them out now because, looking at the old calendar on the wall, Tyson Saner’s next episode, Succotash Shut-In #226 covers Halloween and I won’t be back until just after.

Still Loading
This show is focused around video games, video game culture and video game history. The clip we've snipped is from August 23, 2020, and is about NINJAS! For the Summer of PS2, this 'sode focuses on Shinobi by Sega. Kade Call from the Gaming Memories podcast joins Josh Covel to talk about the first 3D entry in the classic Sega series. They talk all about the game and even find time to reminisce on the 3 ninjas movies. (I chose this clip because I was a fan of the arcade game "Shinobi" back when I was significantly younger and, although I do not remember playing "Shinobi" for the PS2, I do appreciate the enthusiasm with which the conversation was had…also, NINJAS!

The Dark Weeb
Comedians and weeb-adjacent homies Cody Ziglar & Brodie Reed kick back each week and cover a favorite nerdy pop-culture interest; anime, manga, video games, and everything in between.
This week Zig & Brodie are joined by apex nerd, writer & comedian Heather Anne Campbell, and super fan Alexis Qusarano to their love for the mind-bending anime classic, Neon Genesis Evangelion! (I chose this clip because although I have not experienced the subject matter firsthand, I have seen many of the classics such as "Akira", "Fist of the North Star", "Wicked City", "Ghost in the Shell", "Ninja Scroll" and "Princess Mononoke", just to name a few and I AM a fan of Anime in general so… I get the enthusiasm… also, I've been meaning to see "Neon Genesis Evangelion" one of these days…) 

Yes again, it's another end, my friends. I hope we entertained. I have been listening to soundcasts more and more lately because that's what needs to be done for this sort of show. I'd say that I listen to less soundcasts than I used to but I'm not really sure about that. It's not significantly less… and I only bring it up because I was thinking about how I find shows to listen to and feature on Succotash Shut-In and there are a fair few that I heard of because I'm listening to soundcasts and I hear them mentioned on those soundcasts ,or being advertised somewhere during whatever I happen to be listening to at the time. I also find shows on Twitter. I'm at @revt23 personally and the show is @SuccotashShow in case you happen to be on there… why not say "hi"?

We appreciate it when you tell others about us as well…we try to make ourselves easy to find, easy to digest. Thank you for eating us. Thank you for listening. That’s what we here at Succotash Patch Productions call a “podcast” because maybe you don’t listen to them on an iPod any more, which went out of production a few years ago. I’m your every-other-weekly-host Marc Hershon and this is Episode 223 of our nine and a half year-old show with a slightly new name in honor of COVID-19 and its attendant lockdown.

The Jock Doc Podcast
Our submitted clip today comes from The Jock Doc Podcast, and features Dr. London Smith as the host. Here’s the note that accompanied the clip: “Here is a clip from the beginning of the first episode of the Jock Doc Podcast, all improvised. I tell people to just give the first episode 5 minutes and they will know whether they will like the podcast.” Well, Doc, that’s fair enough… 

How Did This Get Made?
Let’s start out this revue of movie review soundcasts with a snippet from pretty much the granddaddy of the genre, hosted by Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas, who put some of filmdom’s most unwatchable dreck through the spanking machine. But they do it with love, because they know that no one ever sets out to make a bad movie…it just sort of happens. My featured clip is from an episode from about a month ago, in Spetember, in which they ripped apart The Velocipastor. The synopsis for the movie on IMDB reads: “After losing his parents, a priest travels to China, where he inherits a mysterious ability that allows him to turn into a dinosaur. At first horrified by this new power, a hooker convinces him to use it to fight crime. And ninjas.”

Dad’s Movie Night
Our second clip of the review theme has a scanty description that goes like this: “Two dads watching movies from our youth and trying to figure out if they hold up, should they be rebooted, and...should we force our kids to eventually watch them.” The dads are Pete and Brian – that’s all I can find on them – no last names, no Twitter accounts, and in their 119^th outing they dive into one of my old faves, Tremors, starring Fred Ward and Kevin Bacon. And this is a movie they actually like, BTW, so an exception to that ‘bad movies only’ rule most shows abide by!

The Flop House
First of all, nice on-brand title for a soundcast that takes a look at crappy movies. It features a triumverate of hosts: Elliott Kalan, Dan McCoy, and Stuart Wellington and they are…you know what? Let me let their homesite blurb lay it out: “They are friends who’ve decided to express that friendship not by doing productive or enjoyable things, but instead by watching critical or commercial flops, and then discussing those terrible movies for you to enjoy in your ear-holes. Although, honestly, most of the time they just talk about random bullshit.” My featured snippet is from their recent Epi323, where they forced themselves to watch Deadly Lessons.

Who Shot Ya?
Our final clip is a Maximum Fun show featuring “not just a bunch of straight, white dudes”, according to their site. Instead, we are wisked through movie reviews by comedian Ify Nwadiwe, film producer Drea Clark, and film critic Alonso Duralde. We clipped a recent episode where they tucked into Bill And Ted Face The Music, although this segment is more about them flashing back on the two preceding Bill and Ted films.
