Succotash Epi248: Celebratin’ TEN YEARS of Soundcasting!

Welcome to this milestone episode of our little soundcast, which is – this week – celebrating TEN YEARS of doing whatever it is that we do. It made only be Episode 248 (maybe we didn’t drop installments quite as regularly as we should have for a big chunk of the past decade…), but it is still 10 friggin’ years of churning out that sweet, sweet soundcast magic.

In honor of that, and the fact that we seem to be solidly on the downward side of the bell-shaped curve coming out of the coronavirus pandemic, the staff and management of this show have decided to return to our original title. Starting with this episode we are, once again Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. As we flip the first page on the next ten years, this is also now officially Season 5 – a fact you should see reflected in the refreshed show logo on the service where you’re downloading or streaming this show.

If you’re a regular listener to Succotash (in or out of pandemic mode), you‘re savvy to the fact that we either play clips from comedy soundcasts around the web or that we do interviews with soundcasts, comedians, comedian/soundcasts, and other show biz folk.

Well, this episode is going to be a little different.

In observance of our decade of soundcastery, we’ve gotten a little self-indulgent. For the first time since we began, we’ve actually pulled together host Tyson Saner, producer/engineer Joe Paulino, booth announcer Bill Heywatt, and me, your humble executive producer and other host Marc Hershon. We cobbled together a multi-studio experience through Zoom and spend about an hour and a quarter talking about the show’s origins, the various features we've done, how Tyson came to us in the early going and got folded into our team, and more.

We re-hash a classic old Boozin’ with Bill segment, in which our announcer almost poisoned himself and me with a noxious concoction so hideous it should have been criminal. Bill also favors us with a live show introduction, a live show close, and a live reading of a commercial from our long-running sponsor Henderson’s Pants – it’s an announcement of their release of a new product in honor of this show’s anniversary, Henderson’s Anniversary Pants.

We also take a few minutes out to pay homage and send out love and healing energies to political and social comedian and commentator Will Durst,  longtime contributor to this show of our Burst O' Durst segment. Will suffered a severe stroke in the Fall of 2019 and is on the super-slow backroad to recovery. He's even getting back up a microphone now and again, and we play a little clip of his appearance from January on the San Francisco Points of View soundcast with Will Durst & Wille Brown.

Succotash Shut-In Epi247: Yackin' with Dr. Gonzo

I'm Marc Hershon and welcome to a very auspicious Episode 247 of Succotash Shut-In, the Soundcast Stimulus Package. Because not only does this installment feature my interview with a fixture in the San Francisco comedy scene back in the 1980s, 90s and into the early aughts, John Means, AKA Dr. Gonzo, but this is also the very last episode of Succotash Shut-In, the Soundcast Stimulus Package.

Now, to be clear, we’re not going away. No, my alternating host Tyson Saner and I are staying right here, in this very feed. But this show marks the end of Season 4 of this show. It’s also the last show of our first TEN YEARS in soundcasting! And, although the COVID crisis, the pandemic, or whatever you want to call this crazy last year that most of us have managed to muddle through, is not quite over, things are looking brighter and definitely on the upswing.

Millions of Americans have had at least one if not two of their COVID vaccine shots. I’m in line next Tuesday to get my second Pfizer jab. And some people have gotten the one-shot wonder from J&J. Places are opening up – some a little bit wider and more enthusiastically then called for, perhaps —and there is a feeling of, dare I say, normalcy returning to the world.

With that growing momentum in evidence, we have decided to level set this show and return it to its original title starting next week. With our special 10th Anniversary show dropping next Tuesday, it will be the first show of Season 5 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. You shouldn’t have to do anything if you’re a subscriber. You will see the title shift, you’ll see a slightly revamped show graphic, but everything should keep coming to your device just as it is today.

For this show, as I mentioned, Dr. Gonzo, i.e., John Means, is my guest. He created a unique combination of standup and song parodies when he was kicking it back then, and his style of comedy and music made him perfect as an opener for bands. BIG bands. He toured extensively with Huey Lewis & The News, for instance. We get into all that. And, as you’ll hear me fumble around, even after all these years of knowing him, I’m still not sure what to call him. I think I finally settle on “Gonz”, which was and is the most typical thing folks in San Francisco use to refer to him. But he moved back to his native Illinois almost 20 years ago, to his original hometown, Mason City, and that’s where I recently caught up to him on Zoom.

The Brendan Fraser Podcas‪t‬
Hosts Karla and Daniel talk anything and everything Brendan Fraser. And in their Epi 20, entitled "Lemmy or God‪?‬", they've gotten around to discussing the movie Airheads.  In this clip the duo breakdown elements of the plot of the movie with some observations about it's place in comedy history and its cult-film status.

That's what's in this week's installment. In April, Succotash will be celebrating 10 years of soundcasting. It's a little hard for me to believe it has been an entire decade. Maybe it is because my sense of time is somewhat more acute as I scrape the underside of 50…with three years to go admittedly but really, it feels close enough to me…and it only gets closer with every passing moment.

I started listening to podcasts around 2008 and have been participating or interacting with them in various ways since then. In October, my friend Hunter Block and I will have been creating our own soundcast, one Anti Social Show, for 5 years…incidentally, you can find links to that show and pretty much everything I currently have published sound or videowise at www.tysonsaner.com…

This last year was dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic and this year has pretty much continued to be. Vaccines are finally available tho' so…that's a good thing. Succotash Shut-In Epi245 – Jawin’ with Michael Rowe

Howdy, chum! I am Marc Hershon, your every-other-weekly host for Episode 245 of Succotash Shut-In, the Soundcast Stimulus Package. And this week I come to you semi-immune to the coronavirus, more commonly known as COVID-19. One shot down, one shot to go. I don’t want to seem overly eager to get the next dose over and done with, but my wife and I ARE now starting to plan a getaway to Hawaii just to get the hell outta town for the first time in over a year.

I have no clips for you this week but, instead, a visit with Michael Rowe, who started out as a standup comedian but who went on to become a comedy writer and producer for TV. Mike’s been nominated for a half dozen Emmy Awards for his work on Futurama and Family Guy – and he even took one home. He also got a WEBBY Award for his own animated series, The Paranormal Action Squad.

Mike’s one of those guys with long roots in comedy that I should know – we have tons of friends in common. In fact, I was turned onto Mike by Jon Manfrellotti, a friend and comic who was on Succotash a decade ago – WAY back in Episode 16! Mike has got a new book coming out — a memoir — called It’s A Funny Thing: How the Professional Comedy Business Made me Fat and Bald.

Succotash shut-In Epi244: Honorin' Women with Clips

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. I am your host this week on Succotash Shut-In, The Soundcast Stimulus Package, Epi244. How are you all doing? It's the second week of March, 2021, and according to the news and late-night TV talkshow hosts we here in America have been in the thick of COVID-19 for an entire year now. The virus was actually here earlier than that, but the lockdowns started in March…so cheers to those of you who cared enough to mask up and play it safe to avoid that very real bit of science called asymptomatic spread. Thank you for taking the danger seriously.

I only wish everybody had but…um…humans. That's all, just "Humans"…that says it all. Some of them are very stubborn, some of them are very dumb, and some of them are responsible for killing your loved ones. I feel like there should be accountability for that, but no one is asking me.

Succotash Shut-In Epi243: Soundcastin' Friends

Hello, friend-o! Marc Hershon here to host Epi243 of Succotash Shut-In, The Soundcast Stimulus Package. By the look of things – fingers cross, masks still on, and socially distanced yet – things in the US of A are sort of showing signs of getting…dare I say it…post-pandemic-ready. Maybe. Who knows? People were burning their masks in Idaho in some bizarre “freedom ritual”. Very reminiscent of the exact same activity that happened right here in San Francisco around 1918 when they thought the Spanish Flu was tapering off. That didn’t go so well and things actually got worse. But we’ll hope for the best and you never know – maybe mask smoke will be as effective as the scientifically developed vaccines in knocking this thing down.

My main point of bringing up the current state of affair is that, as the pandemic eases, me and my every-other-weekly co-host Tyson Saner maybe restoring this soundcast to some semblance of normal. As you may know, the 10th anniversary of this show is just a month away, in April, and if we feel the spirit move us, we’re likely to restoring the original title of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. Although, actually the REAL original title was Succotash, the Comedy PODCAST PODCAST. But we ditched the P-word for the “soundcast” moniker a couple of years in and that’s who we are.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour
Okay, if you know our show then you know this show, the Chillpak Hollywood Hour, hosted by Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness. Listening to Chillpak was one of the inspirations for me to start up Succotash, and the guys were my first interview outside of Studio P. We even had a couple years run where we were trying to get a real old-fashioned feud going to try to get some press but that never came together. I was recently honored to be asked to be part of a little comedy roundtable on a two-part episode of the show, along with Dean and the thoughtful, insightful, and wickedly funny Suli McCullough. Phil was moderating and we talked about our comedy influences, how we got started performing, and a variety of other topics. In this clip we hit on improv, the San Francisco International Comedy Competition, and Suli’s high school specialty, the Dumb Joke of the Day.

4 Corners Podcast
East Coast comedian Lenny Marcus hosts the 4 Corners Podcast,  and runs a tight ship: 4 topics. 15 minutes per topic. A recent guest on the show was Barry Weintraub, a very funny political comedian and friend of mine for years. He was even my boss at one time, back when I was a stringer for his Comedy USA magazine. He’s been back in his native New York for along time now, was hosting the Schmoozecast out of the Comic Strip and, as I said, was just on 4 Corners where he and Lenny yakked about saving money and a little about comedian and former Succotash guest Ritch Shydner…

Screams & Moans
Okay, this is two soundcast friends at once, neither of who have I ever met face to face. The show is Screams & Moans, hosted by Megan Pentecost, who I only knew for years from her Twitter handle @PodcastWhore, but who was a very early listener to Succotash who went on to start her own jam, to which her logline is: “It's the podcast about movies and sex but not together because that would be porn.” She recently had Jason McNamara guesting, AKA “Jabs” from The Dhead Factor and Boganwood soundcasts. If that name’s familiar, Jabs was on THIS show not long ago, back in Epi213 “Doin’ It Down Under w/Jason McNamara”. And, just like me, Megan screwed up and forgot to hit record the first time around had to re-record the whole episode with Jabs a second time. I guess she picked up a thing or two listening to this show. In this clip, they’re talking about the movie Event Horizon.

Waking from the American Dream
The next clip has a little hair on it because the episode of Waking from the American Dream that I got it from dropped last November 2020. It was the most recent episode I could find. Hosted by yet another friend of this show, Kelly Carlin, it’s not exactly a comedy soundcast but Kelly is witty as hell as well as being smart and insightful as well. She’s been cooped up just like the rest of the intelligent folks for the past year and I love what she has to say here about her jigsaw puzzle experience…

The Record Store Day Podcast‬
From the people who created Record Store Day, The Record Store Day Podcast with Paul Myers is an informative, record store-centric interview show featuring conversations with great guests talking about records, record stores and experiences in the physical retail space. We feature a clip from just a couple of weeks ago that dropped February 22nd, with guests Michael Milosh of Rhye, Dana Gould, and David Swider of indie record store The End Of All Music‪‬.

We here at Succotash Shut-In have been dropping episodes of this sort of "Hey, here's some things you might want to listen to more of..." content in some form or another for almost 10 years now. Sometimes it is mind-boggling to think of how much cumulative content is stored ini the archives at www.succotashshow.com…so many shows clipped and folks spoken to at various points in their existences...which is a result of so much listening to other people speak, sometimes at great length, to find that "perfect" or "surely good enough" moment that we have decided to feature in the "tasting plate" or "Whitman's Sampler" aesthetic that is what this program has mostly been, when it hasn't been about chatting with some of soundcasting's most interesting personalities that is.

BTW, I don't think that I'm the king of run-on sentences but I'm at least peerage.
