Succotash Epi275: Nerdin' Out w/Fantasy, Games & Music

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. Welcome to Episode 275 of Succotash — I'm glad you found us. We have been here for over 10 years now, bringing clips of soundcasts from more-or-less around the globe for your ears to sample in the hopes that you might hear something you like and would like to hear more of, well, more of other people's soundcasts, specifically.

Last week in Epi274, my co-host and your every-other-show-host Marc Hershon brought you what he referred to as "a full rack of clips" and I concur. He clipped from soundcasts For What It’s Worth, Storytime with Seth Rogen, How to Survive! with Danielle & Kristine, and Films to Be Buried With with Brett Goldstein. He also featured a bonus clip of a soundcast called "What Are You Watching?, hosted by soundcaster and friend of the show Chris Mancini. The clip was from a recent episode that none other than the aforementioned Marc Hershon was a guest on. Lots of great content in that episode.

This, however, is Epi275 and I've got three clips. One apiece from the soundcasts known as Dragon Talk, Cinemassacre Podcast, and Metaphysical Milkshake with Rainn and Reza. I'm sure I will be including a classic advert from our longtime fake sponsor Henderson's Pants and their all-inclusive new CoverAlls to "round things out" nicely. The crew of Cinemassacre (James Rolfe, Kieran Fallon, and Justin Silverman) are out of the Nerd Room and into your ear-holes. They chat about their lives and the stuff they love: movies, games, and making videos. You’ll also hear about behind-the-scenes antics, anecdotes about being long-time YouTubers, and a ton of obscure pop-culture crap. It’s the off-the-cuff banter from Rental Reviews mixed with an AVGN panel, every Tuesday! Our clip comes from just back around the corner - this past September - in an episode entitled, "Wy Do We Destroy Video Games?, Bigfoot, and Re-Editing Star Wars".

Metaphysical Milkshake with Rainn & Reza
Hosted by actor Rainn Wilson and scholar Reza Aslan, Metaphysical Milkshake is a weekly soundcast where they go deep, get weird…and search for the meaning of life along the way. Every week the co-hosts guide you through conversations about Life’s Big Questions. And a clip from just last month, they pose one such query to their guest, Grammy-winning musician Jason Isbell, asking him, "Where Does Music Come From?"

I believe that's a pretty decent selection of audio from other peoples' soundcasts. I do enjoy listening to other people have conversations about all sorts of things. Were it not for being involved with this particular soundcast for the number of years that I have, I don't know if I would have ever heard the variety or sheer amount of other peoples conversations.

I do have soundcasts that I listen to regularly, meaning that I will hear every episode they post as soon as possible after they post and I feel very fortunate to be able to do so. I think it has made me a better listener in general somehow… perhaps it functions the same way practicing anything theoretically is supposed to…I really don't know.

Anyway, next week Marc Hershon will be back with more content in Epi276 and I will should be back the week after that if that is indeed what the future has in store for me. I’m going to kick things off with a special bonus clip! What makes it special? Well, I’m in it. That’s right. It’s me being featured as a guest on another soundcast. Hosted by past Succotash guest and friend of the show Chris Mancini, What Are You Watching? is Chris and a guest talking about what they’re watching, mostly on TV but sometimes movies, too. So we’ve had Chris on, we’ve featured his soundcast, so all it took was a little begging and pleading to be invited to be the guest for his recent Episode 50. It was a nice change of pace to be the interviewee, and we had a great time talking about a bunch of shows. The clip is from our discussion of the Hulu/FX streaming show Y: The Last Man.

Movies to be Buried With with Brett Goldstein
If you’re a fan of Ted Lasso, the big breakout hit on Apple TV last year starring Jason Sudekis – as I am, regardless of the pounding it’s been taking from people this season – then you probably also love the character of Roy Kent. Portrayed by Brett Goldstein, Roy’s a foul-mouthed contentious veteran footballer who becomes a foul-mouthed, slightly less contentious coach in Season 2. Brett started out as a staff writer on the show who lobbied Sudekis and the producers to let him play Roy and wouldn’t you know? The guy’s perfect. What I didn’t know of, I’m ashamed to say, is that Brett is also a comedian and, what’s more, has been hosting more than 160 of episodes of his own comedy soundcast called Movies To Be Buried With, with Brett Goldstein. He brings in a guest, explains that they’ve been killed in some manner, but the good news is that they go onto an afterlife where they get to explain their life through their favorite movies. Episode 121 featured guest Patton Oswalt and, as you can imagine, hilarity ensued. We have an ear peek for you…

How To Survive! with Danielle & Kristine
Next up is a clip from the debut episode of a brand new comedy soundcast: How To Survive! with Danielle & Kristine. Every episode features hosts Danielle Koenig & Kristine Kimmel doing their best to help you figure out how to “survive the things that could kill you and the stuff that just makes you wish you were dead.” In their kickoff installment, it’s how to both survive a wildfire and also, with the help of their comedic actress friend and guest, Alex Alexander, how to survive being fired. Our clip is from the first part, and jumps into what you should do if you’re at home and can see a fire coming…

Storytime with Seth Rogen
We’ve clipped another soundcast that just kicked off  in recent weeks: Storytime with Seth Rogen. Seth has a very funny and creative mind, and this is a pretty inventive show, with guests popping in an out as he unfolds someone’s story that intersects with other people and becomes their story along the way. In his first episode, the story belongs to Quinta Brunson, a writer, producer, comedian, and actress. You may know her from her self-produced Instagram series Girl Who Has Never Been on a Nice Date. But before she got into showbiz, she was a Jehovah’s Witness, living a pretty buttoned up lifestyle. Until she was on a date in Phildelphia and happened to meet Paul Rudd, yes, that Paul Rudd, at the movie theater she was in. The impact of that encounter changed the course of her life. Our clip is from Seth’s chat with Paul Rudd, who doesn’t recall his encounter with Quinta, but does explain why he’s so damn nice to people.

For What It’s Worth
Murray Valeriano is a comedian and longtime soundcaster – you maybe heard his show Road Stories, where he chatted with fellow comics about mostly hell gigs – and we’ve met repeatedly during the five-year-run of the Los Angeles Podcast Festival. He has a new-ish soundcast up and running, which I reviewed last week for This Week in Comedy Podcasts for Vulture.com called For What It’s Worth and, as Murray calls it, “the only music and comedy game show … that matters!” It’s a fast-paced game show with a lot of opportunities for the comedian contestant to bust each other’s (and Muraay’s) chops while trying desperately to correctly answer music trivia questions. This clip is from a recent episode featuring Jimmy Pardo, Gary Brightwell, and Geoff Tate, and the opening round, called “The Rock Wall”.

Our clip is from August of this year, the episode entitled: "Masters of the Universe: the Kevin Smith Cut". The boys dip into the 2021 Netflix animated series Masters of the Universe: Revelation, developed by Kevin Smith.

Life is Short with Justin Long
Every episode features host Justin Long cracking open the heads of his guests to get to the good stuff: how they find meaning in life, what their favorite snack food is, which emoji they use most, etc. Our clip goes back a couple of years to pre-pandemic November, 2019, and guest Kevin Smith. They swap stories from Tusk, Zack and Miri Make A Porno, and all the other projects they’ve worked on together. And Kevin talks about how his Catholic upbringing was a gateway to his worship of superheroes.

WTF with Marc Maron
Back in March of this year, comedian/actor//writer Marc Maron welcomed Eddie Murphy in to talk about his standup days, Richard Pryor, his movie career, fatherhood and why now was the right time to make Coming 2 America. We clip off a little bitty piece of that convo.

That, then, concludes the first episode of October. I do hope you find some entertainment in what I've brought to you, and I hope it also perhaps gives you one or two ideas as to what you might choose to listen to next. If we piqued your interest in the slightest then we can safely put that one in the "win" column as it were.

I recently had another chat but as the guest this time on an upcoming episode of What Are You Watching? with Chris Mancini, best known, perhaps, as the co-host of the Comedy Film Nerds soundcast but who know also hosts The Quiet Journeys of Professor Atwood and Conversations from the Abyss. Succotash Epi271: Birth, Life & Death

If you are looking for a soundcast that tells you about other peoples' soundcasts on a regular basis then you've come to the right place. It's what we do here at Succotash…for 10 years now. Yes, I know I already said that…it's STILL sinking in for me.

Those of you who listened to last week's episode will already know that it was hosted by this soundcast's creator and executive producer Marc Hershon. Number #270 it was and there was some top-notch content from the soundcasts known as The Ajumma Show", Geto Boys Reloaded", and Household Faces. There was also a funny musical clip found by Patton Oswalt by a singer/musician by the name of Nick Lutsko. It was a folk song comprised of the bizarre rantings of someone called "Alex Jones". This wasn't samples that were auto-tuned BTW, this was someone singing while a guitar was also playing. (I understand that that is a clunky way to put that. I also understand that "that that" is a strange sounding way to say anything. I usually turn the first "that" into a "thet" so it sounds like "thet that" when I use my outside voice.)

ANYWAY…Epi270 also contained a clip of the late great Norm Macdonald from an episode of Norm Macdonald Live, a podcast that he had hosted with Adam Eget back in 2013. The show has 3 seasons of interviews and is back on YouTube after having been made unavailable in 2018 for some time. The clip had previously been featured on Succotash #89 and was part of an interview that Mr. Macdonald had conducted with the wonderful Carl Reiner. Rest In Peace both of them.

Dad Pants
This first clip was submitted among a handful of clips by a new show from some old friends. Stuart Buckland had a show back in the day called The Angry Chimp, which we featured in Epi84. He then eclipsed that 'cast in favor of What A Pair of Trousers, clipped in our Epi88. The Angry Chimp resurfaced and we had a clip in Epi107. Finally, back in Epi170 in 2018, Stu popped up again with the same lads and a new show called Welcome to Television. Now these lads are more or less dads with a suitably titled show: Dad Pants. It took Stu’s friend Monty Leadon having a baby and asking the odd random question to make him realize that he didn’t really talk to anyone about his parenting. Simultaneously, Monty found himself anxious about his impending fatherhood and wasn’t sure how to start conversations about how he was feeling. The Dad Pants soundcast was born because when a microphone is in front of your face, you have to talk! The premise is that Monty asks Stu and a panel of other dads questions about what he is about to go through. I've selected the clip called "Prepping for Hospital", where the dads fill Monty in on what he needs to pack for the hospital.

Shenk
Host Sara Weinshenk sits down to talk to fellow comedian Kimberly Congdon (host of Broad Topix), discussing everything from mermaid dick to ass play plus ideal first dates and the podcast they are launching together. (They had a soundcast together called Stoned Science that I clipped for Epi168 waaaaay back in early 2018. They also have a new soundcast in the works called The Show.)

The Endless Honeymoon Podcast
Natasha Leggero and Moshe Kasher, married comedians, are using their hilariously hard-won wisdom on relationships and building on their hit Netflix special to help others by offering love advice to callers while simultaneously examining the ups and downs of their own relationship! Our clip comes from a recent show where their guest was Weird Al Yankovic. They discuss Al being perfectly suited to quarantine and hypothetically living to 120, and they give advice to a caller struggling to find meaning after ending a serious relationship.

Succotash, Epi270: Playin’ Some Clips n’ Bits

Welcome. Marc Hershon here, your every-other-weekly host for Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. This is Episode 270 of the show that knows how…knows how to play clips of comedy soundcasts – a sort of Whitman’s Sampler of audio treats, if you will – that gives you a chance to slip a taste of various soundcasts into your ears, take a nibble, and see if you don’t want to go find the whole show and pig out, listening-wise.

I had a week off from my day job for vacation last week and headed down to Los Angeles for some R&R. And I got a chance to hang out with some pals and chums, a few of them having been past visits to Succotash, including Travis Clark, Francis Cronin, Jon Manfrellotti, Matt Weinhold, Rick Overton, and Dana Carvey. It was a lot of fun, got a lot of nothing done, and feel rested up and ready to clip!

Last week in this feed, for Epi269, my classy, crafty, and cogent co-host Tyson Saner not only served up some crispy clips from soundcasts Gluten Free Gaming, The Spawn Chunks, and Coffee With Butterscotch, but he also shared a big chunk an interview with the very funny Andy Kindler that he conducted over on his other soundcast, Anti Social Show, along with his co-host there, Hunter Block. Which leads me to what I have in store for your auditory senses today. I have clips from The Ajumma Show, Geto Boys Reloaded, and Household Faces. In addition, I came across this funny musical clip comedian, actor, and perhaps future guest on this show, Patton Oswalt, found by Nick Lutsko, who took a bunch of whackadoodle rants by ultra rightwing nutball Alex Jones and turn them into a folk song. And we have a couple of calls on the Succotash Not-So-Hotline, including a new Runaway Truck Ramp report that came in over the weekend from…me. Yes, me, recorded as I was driving north on Interstate 5 on my way home through the stretch commonly called the Grapevine. Before we get into the rest of this episode, I have to admit that I’m a little late recording this installment and posting it, but that’s given me the chance to get a word in here about the passing of great comedian Norm MacDonald. He was secretly battling cancer for 9 years and lost that fight this week. He was one prominent comedian on the scene I never got to meet personally, but we had a lot of mutual friends in common and everyone has told me, over the years, what a great, crazy, funny guy Norm was. Germane to our show, he hosted an audio and video soundcast, Norm MacDonald Live, from 2013 to 2016, where he was interview guests – mostly friends from the comedy and acting world. Here’s a clip I featured back in Succotash Episode 89 – two comedy greats we will never hear or see perform live again – Norm MacDonald interviewing Carl Reiner.

The Ajumma Show
Our first clip comes from The Ajumma Show, featuring a pair of queer – their words, no mine - Chicago comedians, Peter Kim & Eunji Kim. Peter actually started out as a San Francisco improvisor and took classes from me at the San Francisco Comedy College before helping to found the Endgames improv company. He then went on to Chicago. The Ajumma Show is a weekly soundcast examining love, politics, culture, personal victories, failures and sage advice through the judgmental glare of an ajumma. What’s an ajumma? It’s a Korean word for a married or middle-aged woman, which seems a little “judgy” itself.  I get the feeling it’s someone who enjoys throwing shade on pretty much anything she doesn’t like. In this clip, the Kims (who are not related) chat about racially specific activities.

Geto Boys Reloaded
I’m not exactly what you’d call a hip hop guy – I know, I know, hard to believe – and this next clip comes from a show that isn’t exactly comedy, but when I saw that comedian Mike Epps was visiting hip hop legends Scarface and Willie D on their Geto Boys Reloaded soundcast, I figured it would be an excuse to bring a little culture into the room here. These guys tend to get a little deep, which is okay with me, as they converse about music, entertainment, social issues and awareness, among other topics. In our clip, the hosts and Mike get into their guest’s story of leaving home for the first time and moving to Atlanta to start a career.

Household Faces
I just reviewed the show our next clip is from, Household Faces, for Vulture.com’s This Week in Comedy Podcasts. (Obviously, Vulture hasn’t gotten the memo on calling them “soundcasts”.) Hosted by charcter actor and improv comedian John Ross Bowie, he interviews other characters actors – those men and women with familiar faces that I am always pointing out to my wife when we’re watching TV or movies and shouting, “I know that guy!” John got pretty well known from his appearances on The Big Bang Theory, and he recently spent three seasons as the dad on Speechless on ABC. The clip I grabbed is from the episode I reviewed featuring Xander Berkeley. Now, you may be saying, “I don’t know from Xander Berkeley,” but you, sir or madam, would be wrong. This guy’s been in over 200 movies and TV shows, including 24, The Walking Dead and, as they get into here, Terminator 2.

Succotash Epi269: Clippin' With A Mystery Theme

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. I am your host for this episode of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, that numbers 269. Last week's Episode 268 was hosted by show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon who, in case you're new to Succotash, has been hosting shows every other week with me…or rather I have been doing so with him…for over a year now. It has been a great way to make sure there is a new show every week for people to discover, recommend, and just basically rely on for weekly entertainment.

If you listened to last week's show, you will already know that it was a chats episode with nary a clip to be found, but dense with conversational goodness to be listened to with none other than comedian, actor, and musician Rick Overton! That episode is called "Palaverin' with Rick Overton" appropriately and is well worth the listen. aside from being on Apple and Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, Podcast FM, PodBay, and others, it is also archived over at www.succotashshow.com as is every episode of Succotash that has been released in the last 10 years.

This week's episode is a biggie for me. Literally the longest show I've put together for you since before the shorter, weekly format started back in 2020. It's clips and a big ole chunk of chat…I've got clips from the soundcasts Gluten Free Gaming, The Spawn Chunks, and Coffee With Butterscotch for starters, and then a rather sizable chunk from another soundcast I co-host with my friend Hunter Block called Anti Social Show. The clip features part of a conversation I was fortunate enough to have with comedian, actor, musician, and past Succotash guest (Epi55) Andy Kindler. I'm very excited to share that with you here. I would like to point out that this episode is themed in a particular way…and I wonder if you can figure out what that theme is by the end of the show? I guess we'll have to see, won't we? Anyway, let's get to it!

Joel Duggan & Pixlriffs host The Spawn Chunks, a podcast all about Minecraft. We dig into Minecraft related news and development snapshots, explore game content and the Minecraft community, and craft our personal thoughts and experiences about the game we love. In a clip from their recent 150th episode (!), hosts Joel and Jonny share their thoughts on exploring the new Minecraft terrain generation in the first Caves & Cliffs Experimental Snapshot.

Coffee with Butterscotch
Now up to 325 episodes, Coffee with Butterscotch is the hilarity-filled official podcast of award-winning video game studio Butterscotch Shenanigans, an independent video game studio best known for its smash hit Crashlands. The podcast features founders Seth Coster (the games programmer), Adam Coster (the web programmer), Sam Coster (the artist), and other awesome people. Clipped from six years ago, Epi18 was when Sam is STILL stuck in the hospital, so in this episode had Adam and Seth carrying the torch and discussing all kinds of random crap.
