Succotash Epi279: Three for the Road

I am your every-other-weekly host which means last week show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon had the hosting duties for Epi278. In that episode, Mr. Hershon interviewed improvisational performer, actor, and voice actor Peter Kim. On the voice acting tip, you might know Peter as the voice of Benny on the Amazon Prime cartoon Fairfax. Perhaps you have heard the soundcast he shares with Eunji Kim called The Ajumma Show, which was featured in Succotash Epi270. Or perhaps you are hearing of him for the first time now. You can always go back and listen to last week's show to hear that interview where Mr. Hershon and Mr. Kim discuss a great many interesting things. (I listen to EVERY episode of Succotash so that I may give my opinion of them with the utmost confidence. I do a LOT of listening. It's kind of my thing…)

Anyway, welcome to THIS week's show where I've clipped some soundcasts for you to get a feel for before potentially seeking out more content from those selfsame soundcasts. BTW, I've never used the word "selfsame" before the time before the most recent usage of it which was about 14 words ago counting from not this next, but the previous utterance of the word "about". (Also, it takes exactly the same amount of time to say "Bee Tee Dubs" as it does to say "By The Way".)

Screen Drafts
The soundcast where experts and enthusiasts competitively collaborate in the creation of screen-centric "best of" lists. Hosted by draft commissioners Clay Keller and Ryan Marker, who exhibit the "Most impeccable taste in guests," according to Entertainment Weekly magazine. Our clip is from back in January, the episode that dropped on January 18, and featured director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) and soundcaster David Chen (Culturally Relevant) competitively ranking the best seven films of director John Woo - cue the doves!

Blood and Black Rum Podcast
This cult film/horror soundcast, now in its 6th year according to the website, is hosted weekly by Ryne Barber and Chris Martin, faithfully bringing you "two dudes, brews, and a film. From September of this year, Episode 186 "So Creepy It's Carpenter II / The Fog" was part of the hosts' Halloween season spent with Carpenter's filmography. They regard The Fog as one of the director's better films and yet they have some thoughts about why it falls somewhere in the middle of his best output. they dive deep into this one (as they do all their subjects) so our clip just scratches the surface. (Oh, yeah — the beer on tap for this one is Leinenkugel's Collaboration Lager!)

I Finally Watched…
So many movies, so little time! Two cinephile friends, David and Alain, watch movies that at least one of them has never seen before and discuss whether it was worth the wait, if the movie holds up, and would they watch it again. Back in April, they finally got around to Amadeus from 1984, starring Tom Hulce and F. Murray Abraham. Our clip captures a bit of their back and forth about this period piece.

And that's what gone into the making of Episode 279. I do hope that if you had happened to stumble across us on your way to find something to listen to that we accomplished our mission in bringing you a few more ideas. It's what this show has been doing for over 10 years now.

The reason this episode is titled "Three for the Road" is, well, there are three clips included. Plus I'm hitting the road for the Thanksgiving holiday, so executive producer and my every-other-weekly-host Marc will be driving the Succotash bus for the next two week, Episodes 280 and 281. I will be back after that with more clips for you in Episode 282.

What would really thrill me personally to know is if you had heard about us from someone else and decided to seek us out because of their recommendation. That would be awesome. It means what we are doing is working in some intrinsic way. At least, I think that's what it would mean…I just looked up "intrinsic" and I apparently DO have an understanding of how to use that word having never really done so previously. Uh…hooray? Succotash Epi278: Chattin' with Peter Kim

I am Marc Hershon, your soundcast sommelier for Episode 278 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. For the uninitiated here’s the deal: Most of the time on this show we feature clips from comedy soundcasts harvested from all over the internet, and we tell you where to find them. Occasionally, however, we’ll have a chat with a comedy soundcaster or other show biz-related folks, and that’s what I have for you today – a visit with an old friend of mine and a funny new voice in the world of animation, special guest Peter Kim.

As far as this episode’s guest goes, let’s set the table for Peter Kim. We cover a lot of his journey in our convo but I first met him when he was a student in an improv comedy class I was teaching in San Francisco. He busted out and helped to start a whole new improv thing there before jumping across the country and into the scene in New York. From there he headed for the improv homeland of Chicago and immersed himself in Second City which was a whole experience and unintended adventure in itself. He also started a soundcast with Eunji Kim, The Ajumma Show, which we have featured on Succotash. And then he shunted to Los Angeles and started getting some parts in TV. Just this month he made his debut voicing the character of Benny Choi, a 13-year-old kid in the posh Fairfax district of LA in an Amazon Prime cartoon called Fairfax.

Succotash Epi277: Two Nights & A Bite

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. I am your host for this first Succotash episode of November. It's number 277, welcome to it. How was your Halloween? Mine hasn't happened yet technically but it will have had by the time you hear this so…Who knows? Will I remember to follow up on it to let you know how it went? Will I tweet about it? How far into the future are you? Does Twitter still exist? Does the internet still exist? How about the iPod, did it make a comeback?…Well, even if it does I imagine this show will still refer to podcasts as "soundcasts" and that's fine by me.

Saturday Night Live (SNL) Afterparty
A Peabody Award-coveting podcast review of NBC's storied late night show SNL, featuring intimate, probing, aggressive—yet tender—conversations with fresh, young, supple voices from across the comedy landscape. Hosted by John Murray of the Spry Agency, and including Katherine Coleman and Steve Finn. Our clip is from the episode looking at Owen Wilson's hosting on October 2nd of this year, as well as musical guest Kacey Musgraves.

And that's what's in store in our first show of November, the first show after Halloween…and we march steadily on towards December and the end of the year that was 2021…Or rather, still IS 2021. How is it that 2021 has been actually somewhat more frustrating than 2020 was? I suppose that's a subjective observation but I'd be willing to bet that I am not alone in that estimation.

Thank you for listening, I do hope you got something out of this brief moment in time and that it was positive. I do hope 2022 is better but I'm in no hurry to get there lately. Succotash Epi276: Team-Ups n' Friends

Hello, Succotashians, wherever you may be! Can you believe we are into the last week of October, 2021 at this point? Before I get too far ahead of myself, I’m Marc Hershon, your host for this week’s show Epi276, and I have got a humdinger of a show for you, as defined by the quartet of clips I have harvested.

Before I reveal the lineup for this episode, did you miss our last episode, number 275, moderated by your every-other-weekly host, Tyson Saner? It was a fun ‘un, for sure, and featured clips from Dragon Talk, Cinemassacre Podcast, and Metaphysical Milkshake with Rainn and Reza.

This week’s installment has some overt team-ups, with Mike & Tom Eat Snacks and O’Brien & Bolt. Then there’s subtler team-ups, as with the two hosts of The Projection Booth, and The Dana Gould Hour, where the host brings in a few pals to riff with him about horror movies.

THE CLIPS

Mike And Tom Eat Snacks
First up is a warm welcome for the return of what was one of my favorite soundcasts back aways: Mike And Tom Eat Snacks. The hosts, Michael Ian Black and Tom Cavanagh hit episode 100 about 4 years ago and went on hiatus. Or hung up their snack shoes. Or who knows what but the important thing is that they are back! Armed with little more than their wits and their PER system – Pick a snack, Eat a snack, Rate a snack – these wisecracking jackanapes surround the most mundane of tasks – eating junk food – with the kind of very funny patter that you can only get with a couple of close friends who also happen to be pretty damn funny. Michael was part of The State, Wet Hot American Summer, and tons of other stuff, and Tom is currently best known for playing the many incarnation of Harrison Welles and the Reverse Flash on the CW’s The Flash. Our clip is from their recent noshing on Walker’s Shortbread.

O’Brien & Bolt: The Podcasts
Two of the funniest guys I know are likely a pair of improv comics you may have never heard of outside the San Francisco Bay Area. Michael O’Brien and Geoff Bolt have forgotten more improv than I’ll ever know, and I’ve been doing it for 35 years. There’s a long history of improv groups in San Francisco, including the National Theatre of the Deranged, Spaghetti Jam, Improv Incorporated, Papaya Juice, and more – and these guys have either been in or jammed with all of them. They’ve started laying down some of their characters through improvised scenes as soundcast episodes in O’Brien & Bolt: The Podcasts, so I wanted to turn you onto them so you could track down their show. The clip we have on deck introduces us to third base coach Stumpy Wilson and some of his “inside baseball” wisdom.

The Dana Gould Hour
When is an hour not an hour? When it’s The Dana Gould Hour! The latest episode, “House of Halloweenery” runs a good two and a half hours…and I’m not complaining! Host Dana Gould is super-funny, off-kilter, and can get pretty dark. He did, after all, come up with the IFC show Stan Against Evil  and it is a good barometer of Dana’s sense of humor. In the latest episode of his soundcast, he starts out talking to Jeff Abraham and Burt Kearns, authors of “The Show Won’t Go On!”, stories about performers who literally died on stage. This clip is from the back half of the show when he talks horror movies and more with friend-of-Succotash Matt Weinhold and Ken Daly, who I wish was a friend of the show.

The Projection Booth
I’m not sure The Projection Booth qualifies as a comedy soundcast per se but hosts Mike White and Rob St. Mary do have some differences of opinion when it comes to reviewing films that can get a little testy and, frankly, a lot funny. This clip is from a recent episode when the guys put the new Dune movie up against the Dune movie directed by David Lynch back in 1984.

I was late getting this episode up and out this week, mainly because the power was out in Studio N, my Nerd Nook, because of the storms this past weekend in the Bay Area. So I couldn’t harvest clips or get much of anything else done. So we had to dispense with the TweetSack this time around. And there were no calls into the Succotash Soundcast & Runaway Truck Status Hotline.

Succotash Epi275: Nerdin' Out w/Fantasy, Games & Music

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. Welcome to Episode 275 of Succotash — I'm glad you found us. We have been here for over 10 years now, bringing clips of soundcasts from more-or-less around the globe for your ears to sample in the hopes that you might hear something you like and would like to hear more of, well, more of other people's soundcasts, specifically.

Last week in Epi274, my co-host and your every-other-show-host Marc Hershon brought you what he referred to as "a full rack of clips" and I concur. He clipped from soundcasts For What It’s Worth, Storytime with Seth Rogen, How to Survive! with Danielle & Kristine, and Films to Be Buried With with Brett Goldstein. He also featured a bonus clip of a soundcast called "What Are You Watching?, hosted by soundcaster and friend of the show Chris Mancini. The clip was from a recent episode that none other than the aforementioned Marc Hershon was a guest on. Lots of great content in that episode.

This, however, is Epi275 and I've got three clips. One apiece from the soundcasts known as Dragon Talk, Cinemassacre Podcast, and Metaphysical Milkshake with Rainn and Reza. Cinemassacre Podcast
The crew of Cinemassacre (James Rolfe, Kieran Fallon, and Justin Silverman) are out of the Nerd Room and into your ear-holes. They chat about their lives and the stuff they love: movies, games, and making videos. You’ll also hear about behind-the-scenes antics, anecdotes about being long-time YouTubers, and a ton of obscure pop-culture crap. It’s the off-the-cuff banter from Rental Reviews mixed with an AVGN panel, every Tuesday! Our clip comes from just back around the corner - this past September - in an episode entitled, "Wy Do We Destroy Video Games?, Bigfoot, and Re-Editing Star Wars".

Metaphysical Milkshake with Rainn & Reza
Hosted by actor Rainn Wilson and scholar Reza Aslan, Metaphysical Milkshake is a weekly soundcast where they go deep, get weird…and search for the meaning of life along the way. Every week the co-hosts guide you through conversations about Life’s Big Questions. And a clip from just last month, they pose one such query to their guest, Grammy-winning musician Jason Isbell, asking him, "Where Does Music Come From?"

I believe that's a pretty decent selection of audio from other peoples' soundcasts. I do enjoy listening to other people have conversations about all sorts of things. Were it not for being involved with this particular soundcast for the number of years that I have, I don't know if I would have ever heard the variety or sheer amount of other peoples conversations.

I do have soundcasts that I listen to regularly, meaning that I will hear every episode they post as soon as possible after they post and I feel very fortunate to be able to do so. I think it has made me a better listener in general somehow… perhaps it functions the same way practicing anything theoretically is supposed to…I really don't know.

Anyway, next week Marc Hershon will be back with more content in Epi276 and I will should be back the week after that if that is indeed what the future has in store for me. I’m going to kick things off with a special bonus clip! What makes it special? Well, I’m in it. That’s right. It’s me being featured as a guest on another soundcast. Hosted by past Succotash guest and friend of the show Chris Mancini, What Are You Watching? is Chris and a guest talking about what they’re watching, mostly on TV but sometimes movies, too. So we’ve had Chris on, we’ve featured his soundcast, so all it took was a little begging and pleading to be invited to be the guest for his recent Episode 50. It was a nice change of pace to be the interviewee, and we had a great time talking about a bunch of shows. The clip is from our discussion of the Hulu/FX streaming show Y: The Last Man.

Movies to be Buried With with Brett Goldstein
If you’re a fan of Ted Lasso, the big breakout hit on Apple TV last year starring Jason Sudekis – as I am, regardless of the pounding it’s been taking from people this season – then you probably also love the character of Roy Kent. Portrayed by Brett Goldstein, Roy’s a foul-mouthed contentious veteran footballer who becomes a foul-mouthed, slightly less contentious coach in Season 2. Brett started out as a staff writer on the show who lobbied Sudekis and the producers to let him play Roy and wouldn’t you know? The guy’s perfect. What I didn’t know of, I’m ashamed to say, is that Brett is also a comedian and, what’s more, has been hosting more than 160 of episodes of his own comedy soundcast called Movies To Be Buried With, with Brett Goldstein. He brings in a guest, explains that they’ve been killed in some manner, but the good news is that they go onto an afterlife where they get to explain their life through their favorite movies. Episode 121 featured guest Patton Oswalt and, as you can imagine, hilarity ensued. We have an ear peek for you…

How To Survive! with Danielle & Kristine
Next up is a clip from the debut episode of a brand new comedy soundcast: How To Survive! with Danielle & Kristine. Every episode features hosts Danielle Koenig & Kristine Kimmel doing their best to help you figure out how to “survive the things that could kill you and the stuff that just makes you wish you were dead.” In their kickoff installment, it’s how to both survive a wildfire and also, with the help of their comedic actress friend and guest, Alex Alexander, how to survive being fired. Our clip is from the first part, and jumps into what you should do if you’re at home and can see a fire coming…

Storytime with Seth Rogen
We’ve clipped another soundcast that just kicked off  in recent weeks: Storytime with Seth Rogen. Seth has a very funny and creative mind, and this is a pretty inventive show, with guests popping in an out as he unfolds someone’s story that intersects with other people and becomes their story along the way. In his first episode, the story belongs to Quinta Brunson, a writer, producer, comedian, and actress. You may know her from her self-produced Instagram series Girl Who Has Never Been on a Nice Date. But before she got into showbiz, she was a Jehovah’s Witness, living a pretty buttoned up lifestyle. Until she was on a date in Phildelphia and happened to meet Paul Rudd, yes, that Paul Rudd, at the movie theater she was in. The impact of that encounter changed the course of her life. Our clip is from Seth’s chat with Paul Rudd, who doesn’t recall his encounter with Quinta, but does explain why he’s so damn nice to people.

For What It’s Worth
Murray Valeriano is a comedian and longtime soundcaster – you maybe heard his show Road Stories, where he chatted with fellow comics about mostly hell gigs – and we’ve met repeatedly during the five-year-run of the Los Angeles Podcast Festival. He has a new-ish soundcast up and running, which I reviewed last week for This Week in Comedy Podcasts for Vulture.com called For What It’s Worth and, as Murray calls it, “the only music and comedy game show … that matters!” It’s a fast-paced game show with a lot of opportunities for the comedian contestant to bust each other’s (and Muraay’s) chops while trying desperately to correctly answer music trivia questions. This clip is from a recent episode featuring Jimmy Pardo, Gary Brightwell, and Geoff Tate, and the opening round, called “The Rock Wall”.

Succotash Epi273: Kevin, Kevin & Eddie

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. I am your host for the duration of this episode of Succotash numbering 273. Last week in Epi272, my co-host and every-other-show-host Marc Hershon brought the listener, which may or may not have included you, a Chats episode where he sat down to talk with John Ross Bowie (The Big Bang Theory, Speechless) of the Household Faces soundcast and, as Marc put it "literally dozens and dozens of things". This soundcast provides expert commentary on comedy, music, movies, TV, news, history and everything in between. Hosts Dags and Assistant Manager Mike Resin enjoy their childish comedy and light-hearted fun! Our clip is from August of this year, the episode entitled: "Masters of the Universe: the Kevin Smith Cut". The boys dip into the 2021 Netflix animated series Masters of the Universe: Revelation, developed by Kevin Smith.

Life is Short with Justin Long
Every episode features host Justin Long cracking open the heads of his guests to get to the good stuff: how they find meaning in life, what their favorite snack food is, which emoji they use most, etc. Our clip goes back a couple of years to pre-pandemic November, 2019, and guest Kevin Smith. They swap stories from Tusk, Zack and Miri Make A Porno, and all the other projects they’ve worked on together. And Kevin talks about how his Catholic upbringing was a gateway to his worship of superheroes.

WTF with Marc Maron
Back in March of this year, comedian/actor//writer Marc Maron welcomed Eddie Murphy in to talk about his standup days, Richard Pryor, his movie career, fatherhood and why now was the right time to make Coming 2 America. We clip off a little bitty piece of that convo.

That, then, concludes the first episode of October. I do hope you find some entertainment in what I've brought to you, and I hope it also perhaps gives you one or two ideas as to what you might choose to listen to next. If we piqued your interest in the slightest then we can safely put that one in the "win" column as it were.
