Fandom! The Podcast
I had pretty much pulled all the clips together for this episode and was getting ready to record when I happened to have a text exchange with a couple of old friends of mine from my sketch comedy days in North Hollywood with a group called Fries On The Side. Kenny Stevenson and Dorien Davies have been special guests on Succotash WAY back in Episode 20(!) Anyway, we were texting about something or another and Kenny mentioned that he and another old chum, Alex Enriquez, had just started a new soundcast. Kenny used to co-host a sports soundcast called Knuckle Sanwich – great title – but that had been down for a while. So he and Alex have started a new show – right up my alley as they cover a lot of super-nerdy pop culture territory – and I just got this clip in under the wire for this episode. Their show is called Fandom! The Podcast, from the Fan Controlled Network, and their most recent episode talks a lot about the new Willow streaming show on Disney+.

Jordan Klepper Fingers the Conspiracy
One of the best forces for pseudo-journalism goodness has got to be Jordan Klepper, who’s been a fixture on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show for years. He’s got a six-episode limited-run soundcast under the Comedy Central banner called Jordan Klepper Fingers The Conspiracy, where he digs deep into some of the wildest MAGA theories he’s heard and, according to the show’s description, “traces their origins with journalists, experts, and anyone who might have a lead on when JFK Jr. is coming back. The soundcast offers an opportunity to better understand some of the most extravagant stories Americans tell themselves.” In Epi5 of the series, Jordan wades deep into the history and mystery that is “Hunter Biden’s Laptop.” We have a sample…

Hey Riddle Riddle
I’ll be the first to admit this, but some soundcasts get past me. Maybe I’m not paying attention or maybe it’s because there are a couple hundred THOUSAND of them out there now. But I’m really ashamed to ‘fess up to missing Hey Riddle Riddle, mainly because it’s hosted by a trio of improv and sketch performers and those are MY people. Adal Rifai, Erin Keif, and John Patrick Coan are Chicago-based and they’ve been doing Hey Riddle Riddle for at least 4 years now. Out of the Headgum Studios, their homesite only has shows through their 4th anniversary show, which dropped this past August 27th. But there are still fresh installments coming out, available on Apple Podcasts, etc. What is Hey Riddle Riddle, for those of you who are like me and in the dark? Their show’s description on Apple Podcasts reads, “Riddles! Puzzles! WhoDunnits! Adal Rifai, Erin Keif and John Patrick Coan, three of Chicago's most overrated improvisers, are on the case to solve every riddle, puzzle, brainteaser, and head-scratcher known to humanity. Some riddles are almost impossible, some are absolutely improbable, and some simply have not aged well. And if you don't like riddles, don't worry! This podcast is barely about them!” I bring you a pull from their 4th season finale episode where they get into guessing movie title mashups.

The Salty Language Podcast
If you’ve been a listener to this soundcast for any appreciable length of time, you know that both Tyson and I do have our favorites out there in Soundcastland. So we occasionally show them a bit more love than some of the other shows we feature. Tyson just played a bit last episode from our chum Davian Dent from England. I often talk with Jabs AKA Jason McNamara in Australia. And other folks like Hunter Block from Anti Social Show, Ethan Dettenmeier of Combat Radio, Ed Wallick from the hiatus’ed Don’t Quit Your Daycast, and Travis Clark from, originally, Tiny Odd Conversations. A few shows retweet OUR tweets religiously – like The Jock Doc Podcast and I Shake My Head with Lisa and Sam. So I want to do them a solid and recognize their place in our Soundcast Society, too, which is why we’re featuring a clip from a recent installment of The Salty Language Podcast. Hosted by Tony and Bryan, this show has been around probably as long as Succotash. Sluggin’ out the episodes one after the other. The show’s simple description on their homesite reads, “A soundcast about pop culture, living life, and anything else in our tiny brains.” This clip is about one of the guys having made it to his first in-person medical checkup since COVID started.

Man Thinkers
It’s hard to tell if the attitude of the hardcore male chauvinist is on the run or just biding its time. I’d like to think that kind of backwards attitude that men have towards women is being eclipsed by something more forward-thinking. Whatever the case, it’s a way of thinking that soundcasters are having fun ripping on in a variety of ways. One of those is an iHeart Radio production, a show called Man Thinkers, featuring George Collins and Dan Finklestein. Here is how the show is described over on Apple Podcasts: “Man Thinkers is a podcast where the facts...are up for debate. For decades, the lamestream media has prevented real men from sharing their knowledge. On Man Thinkers, there are no degrees and no rules. The hosts aren't impressed by run-of-the-mill ‘experts.’ Man Thinkers is a new space populated by iconoclastic thinkers, academic renegades, and media personalities that sound unlike anything else. Cable news is for the old and social media has become too toxic to trust. George and Dan courageously have the tough conversations that mainstream media won’t touch. Man Thinkers is a safe space from safe spaces, nothing is off limits.” In a recent episode that dropped back on November 24th of this year, George and Dan had two women on the show: Liz Plank and Monica Padman. Lis is a Canadian journalist, author, and soundcast host. Monica is an actor, podcast producer and co-host – you’ve heard her on here before when we’ve clipped Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard. The Man Thinkers had them on to talk about women freezing their eggs. Here’s how part of the conversation went…

Succotash Epi333: 3 New Clips + 1 Bonus Buddy Clip

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner, one of two rotating hosts of this soundcast called Succotash that numbers 333. Your other host is Marc Hershon who created this show more than 11 years ago to bring you a variety of clips from soundcasts from all around the internet as well as the occasional interview.

The Crazy Life
The Crazy Life soundcast was founded by Gen and Bryan in 2015 to shine a light on the funny side of mental illness. The show features those two and Henno, who pull aside the shame curtain that surrounds mental health. Our featured clip is from the episode from November 19, 2022, entitled "Masking", with Gen and Bryan talk about spending time with yourself, being truthful to yourself by learning new terms for something, then they talk about the topic of masking, and more! Barnes, Brenner, and Fitzgerald
Exclusively on Spotify, iHeart Radio & Anchor.fm, BB&F feature three comics — Joshua Barnes, Lauren Brenner, and Eric Fitzgerald — talking shit about life and various other topics. Our clip was harvested from their second episode that dropped October 20th, 2022, entitled "Space, Where Billionaires Go to Die", in which is discussed (as the episode description indicates) The River in Humboldt, Space, and Billionaires abandoning up for the stars.

The Bitter Sound
In place of our usual phony ad from fake sponsor Henderson's Pants, we have a clip from what I'm told is a future episode of The Bitter Sound", created by friend-of-Succotash Davian Dent. Its description says that it is "A stereophonic journey into a world of dark comedy, music and strange audio."

And hey, just when it is feeling good to be back another show comes to a close. Isn't that the way of things? I do hope you found something of interest in the offerings placed before your hungry-hungry earholes. I listen to a LOT of podcasts, and every time I say that it is even more true. I'm almost certain that I will not be able to hear everyone's podcast at least once before I die due to time and life constraints but I am ok with that…I still listen to a LOT of podcasts…and I usually refer to them as "soundcasts" within the confines of this show as well as when I explain what the show is to other people.

It doesn't come up that often. It's usually related to the "So, what do you do?" part of a getting-to-know-someone conversation, and I don't really have those all that often. I suspect as the world opens up more I will get that opportunity so I guess it is good to practice.

Succotash Epi332: Second Helping - Diggin' Into Mike Birbiglia

Hello there, dear listener, and welcome to Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. Our esteemed announcer, Bill Heywatt, kicks off the show in the usual fashion but I wanted to let you know, personally, that I am on vacation this week and that what we’re serving up for your for Episode 331 is actually a Succotash: Second Helping of Episode 217. It’s our show from August 25th, 2020, in the depths of the COVID pandemic, with my special guest Mike Birbiglia.

Mike’s on Broadway right now, scoring big with his new stage show, “The Old Man and The Pool”, but back then he was still putting the show together and you’ll get to hear him kicking around what he was thinking of doing. It’s a good chat, which I am going to kick back and listen to while I’m polishing off some Thanksgiving leftovers!

My over-qualified co-host Tyson Saner took a well-deserved vacay last week, which is why Epi331 was also a Succotash: Second Helping, featuring Tyson’s chat with J. Elvis Weinstein. Succotash Epi330: Early Thanksgiving Feast O' Clips

Hello, hello, hello. This IS Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, and I AM Marc Hershon, host for Episode 330. Sorry that this installation is a bit late. I caught a little bit of a cold, which you might still hear in my voice, and didn’t want to impinge on your eardrums with my hoarseness.

I’m not the ONLY host of Succotash, as you may well know. I share these duties with my awesome counterpart, Tyson Saner, as we switch off episodes so we can bring you the very most bestest clips from soundcasts across the Interverse.

So now he’s waiting to see if the folks at Team Coco believe in it enough to pony up the scratch to make more episodes. I bet they will.

My Dad Wrote A Porno
One of the most unique soundcasts when it debuted back in 2015 had to be My Dad Wrote A Porno. Jamie Morton discovered that his father, writing under the nom de plume “Rocky Flintstone”, had written a pornographic novel call Belinda Blinked. Reading it aloud to his friends James Cooper and Alice Levine proved to be too hilarious to keep to themselves so they turned the experience into a soundcast. I actually chatted with the trio back in our Episode 141, which you can check out on our SuccotashShow.com homesite. I wanted to revisit the show because they have recently announced that My Dad Wrote A Porno will be closing down next month. Maybe it's because they’re tired of it, or maybe Rocky won’t stop writing porn – he’s up to his 6th book in the Belinda Blinked saga. This clip is from their “Best of Book 6” episode, where they get into some of Belinda’s best bits, so to speak.

Ghosted!There is certainly no shortage of soundcasts dealing with the paramormal out there. Many of them lean into comedy because, otherwise, I guess we’d just be scared shitless all the time. Take, ofr instance, the clip we have from Ghosted! With Roz Hernandez. Specifically from an episode that dropped earlier this month, where Roz’ guest was comedian Matt Braunger. In this part of the show, they listened to a couple of EVPs, or “electronic voice phenomena”. If you don’t know what those are, Roz explains at the top of the clips. And even with Roz and Matt joking about what they’re hearing, you might want to sleep with your light on from now on…

Judith Lucy: Overwhelmed & Living
I was turned onto this next Australian-based soundcast from our friend “Jabs”, or Jason McNamara as it says on his birth certificate, host of The DHead Factor, which is currently on the longest hiatus ever, as well as Boganwood. The soundcast is Judith Lucy: Overwhelmed & Living, and Jabs says Judith Lucy has “very dry but hilarious Australian humor”. The show description on Apple Podcasts reads: “After lockdown Judith is still asking the big questions. Between baking and wondering if she had a drinking problem, Judith wondered how happy we'd been in our old lives and why 'back to normal' is not a good idea for us or the planet. She's out to change her life and yours.” In our clip, she decides to make some changes in her home to save money and to benefit the environment. She invites Brett Hedger, the greenhouse programs officer for the City of Port Phillip, over to see just how bad her place is. It’s…not good.

The Midnight Snack
One of the first Succotash listener-slash-supporters-slash-soundcasters out there to start using the term soundcast  for their own show was Dave In The Cave. That’s the only name I ever called him (although I do know his nae is actually Dave Howard…), and he had a show called Taco Tuesdays. That show ended up, eventually, in the soundcast graveyard – which is a segment we should maybe bring back. After a few years off my radar, Dave In The Cave popped back on when he responded to one of our Succotash tweets last week. It turns out he has a soundcast called The Midnight Snack but he's kind of off the reservation in terms of where the show is distributed. I’m only finding it on Soundcloud, which is a fine place to be – you can find us there, too, of course. The show has an amazing cast of wacky characters who seem to appear only in bumpers between some cool original music. We have a sample from his latest episode 98…

OUr clips is from a-ways back. 4 years back, in fact, from January 16th of 2018 - with guest Eden Rohatensky, whom Tuck talks to about such topics as adding a non-binary voice to the #MeToo movement, the difficulties of coming out as non-binary in other languages, how coming out helped Eden recognize their privilege, navigating the tech industry as a non-straight-white-dude, and exploring the question: Is gender a spooky ghost?

The Pen Pals Podcast
As the show's description promises: "Every week, your pen pals, Daniel Van Kirk and Rory Scovel, respond to the letters you send them on topics ranging from free will to freeway etiquette, from mental health to manatees. Seek advice. Tell a story. Vent. Send a letter. It's your podcast, we just talk about it." Our featured clip is lovingly harvested from their episode from just a few week's ago, on October 26th, 2022, and features a guest: Chad Daniels. It's entitled "RE: Turning 40 & Chips".

The Weird Place
As I mentioned, we had Dana Carvey on the show two episodes ago, mostly to talk about The Weird Place, his new comedy scripted show. I encourage you to go listen to that for a lot of inside scoop on the show. And although I played a little one minute teaser for the show, I wasn’t allowed to clip the show until it officially dropped, which JUST happen on Halloween. So here are a few minutes of their very first episode, entitled “Pirates vs. Submarine, Part 1”.

Hamish & Andy
We next venture from The Weird Place to Down Under, and a soundcast called Hamish & Andy. The hosts, Hamish Blake and Andy Lee, got started radio, it seems, but have gone full soundcasts as of about 5 years ago. I checked in with friend-of-the-show Jason McNamara, AKA “Jabs”, who live in Canberra, and he says, “They’re massive here. Have TV shows and everything.” They seem super popular in a lot of places around the world, so it’s high time we gave ‘em a snip on Succotash. In this clip they’ve discovered they have not only been recently featured in a magazine called Podcast Weekly, and there’s the Hamish & Andy quiz, where you can learn if you most like Hamish, Andy, or their producer, Jack.

Spoiler alert: There is no Podcast Weekly magazine. Hamish and Andy are just having their way with you. If. You can swing with the Aussie accent, this show’s pretty good fun. Endless Honeymoon
Co-host Tyson clipped the Endless Honeymoon soundcast a little over a year ago, but hosts Moshe Kasher and Natasha Leggero recently had Dak Sheper, of Armchair Expert soundcast fame, on and they got into a lot of interesting conversational territories. At one point, Dak and Moshe started comparing the sizes of their RVs. As men do.

DorkNation (High School Sucked)
I’m a little confused by our next offering, which is back in the U of A. I first thought the soundcast was called High School Sucked, hosted by Jane Stanton and Darcy Michael. But the most recent three episodes are called DorkNation – one word: Dorknation – and the “About” section on the website says “Jane Stanton hosts new guests each week to dish some dirt on High School. Were they best years of our lives? Does it actually get better? Join us with a new guest each week as we attempt relive the "glory" days.” And then the first episode of “DorkNation has both hosts kicking off what they’re calling “High School Sucked.” This episode, the first of three DorkNation shows – maybe more are coming, I’m not sure – feature just ordinary folks waxing on about how miserable high school was. This clip features a guest named Haylyn talking about how her best friend, who started out as her worst enemy, managed to get through it all.

Callan’s Kicks
Let’s head over to Ireland now for a clip from a soundcast called Callan’s Kicks, featuring Oliver Callan, who is a comedian, a voice actor, and an impressionist. He’s been doing his soundcast almost as long as we have, having started back 10 years ago in 2012. And his “kicks”, are a reference to the satirical shots he takes on the show at a variety of public figures, mostly through audio sketches where he does the voice of whomever he’s sniping at. Our snippet is from the episode that dropped just last week, entitled “Rishi, Bono, and Halloween”. Here’s Bono, reading an excerpt from his new book about Ireland.

Young Man by Old Neil
