Succotash Shut-In Epi246: Trimmin' A Trio

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. Welcome to Succotash Shut-In — I am your every-other week host bringing you this episode which is enumerated #246. Last week my co-host and every-other-week show-host Marc Hershon brought you episode @245 which was a "Chats" episode featuring a conversation with comedian and comedy writer for television, Michael Rowe. It's an fun episode that I recommend you listen to by going to our homesite at www.succotashshow.com…of course if you are listening to this on a podcast service of some other kind such as Apple or Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, the Laughable app, iHeart Radio, or even YouTube, you should most definitely be able to listen to it and other episodes that way.

If this is your first time here, thank you for listening. Aside from chats with notably interesting folks, episodes of Succotash have been known to feature clips of soundcasts from all over the English-speaking parts of the world. This episode is one of those types of episodes. I've got clips from the soundcasts The Brendan Fraser Podcast, Fascination Street, and The Bill Bert Podcast. I've also got a seasonally appropriate bit of advertising for the new Spring Breakers from our longtime sponsor Henderson's Pants for you. So, without further ado, let's get to the clips shall we?

CLIPS

The Bill Bert Podcas‪t‬
In their Episode 50 Bill Burr and Bert Kreischer prattle about shrooms, the royal family, and surf dreams. Our clip contains the beginning of the aformentioned shroom-prattling...

Fascination Stree‪t‬
Hosted by Steve Owens, this soundcast introduces us to Fascinating People with Fascinating Stories. On March 14th, 2021, his guest is John Sylvain (Nooner) and a Game Creator (You Know It!‪) In our clip clip, the game You Know It! is discussed as well as Nooner which has been clipped on this program a few times in the almost 10 years that both that show and THIS show, Succotash have been in existence.

The Brendan Fraser Podcas‪t‬
Hosts Karla and Daniel talk anything and everything Brendan Fraser. And in their Epi 20, entitled "Lemmy or God‪?‬", they've gotten around to discussing the movie Airheads.  In this clip the duo breakdown elements of the plot of the movie with some observations about it's place in comedy history and its cult-film status.

That's what's in this week's installment. In April, Succotash will be celebrating 10 years of soundcasting. It's a little hard for me to believe it has been an entire decade. Maybe it is because my sense of time is somewhat more acute as I scrape the underside of 50…with three years to go admittedly but really, it feels close enough to me…and it only gets closer with every passing moment.

I started listening to podcasts around 2008 and have been participating or interacting with them in various ways since then. In October, my friend Hunter Block and I will have been creating our own soundcast, one Anti Social Show, for 5 years…incidentally, you can find links to that show and pretty much everything I currently have published sound or videowise at www.tysonsaner.com…

This last year was dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic and this year has pretty much continued to be. Vaccines are finally available tho' so…that's a good thing. Thank you again for listening, tune in next week for Marc Hershon's episode 247, wear a mask, wash your hands, be decent to each other, and if you like the show's format and think other folks might also…please pass the Succotash!

Succotash Shut-In Epi245 – Jawin’ with Michael Rowe

Howdy, chum! I am Marc Hershon, your every-other-weekly host for Episode 245 of Succotash Shut-In, the Soundcast Stimulus Package. And this week I come to you semi-immune to the coronavirus, more commonly known as COVID-19. One shot down, one shot to go. I don’t want to seem overly eager to get the next dose over and done with, but my wife and I ARE now starting to plan a getaway to Hawaii just to get the hell outta town for the first time in over a year.

Switching gears: In case you missed my awesome co-host for last week’s Epi244, you can still catch Tyson Saner and his lineup of soundcast clips that included Mayim Bialik's Breakdown, Humboldt Holding Up, and Behind the Bastards. Find it on Apple or Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, the Laughable app, iHeart Radio, YouTube, or right on our very own homesite, SuccotashShow.com.

I have no clips for you this week but, instead, a visit with Michael Rowe, who started out as a standup comedian but who went on to become a comedy writer and producer for TV. Mike’s been nominated for a half dozen Emmy Awards for his work on Futurama and Family Guy – and he even took one home. He also got a WEBBY Award for his own animated series, The Paranormal Action Squad.

Mike’s one of those guys with long roots in comedy that I should know – we have tons of friends in common. In fact, I was turned onto Mike by Jon Manfrellotti, a friend and comic who was on Succotash a decade ago – WAY back in Episode 16! Mike has got a new book coming out — a memoir — called It’s A Funny Thing: How the Professional Comedy Business Made me Fat and Bald.

This chat was actually recorded a couple of weeks ago and I have now finished It’s A Funny Thing. It’s available at Amazon for sure, BearManer Media, and we have links up at the blog entry for this episode at SuccotashShow.com.

Tyson will be with you next week for Episode 246 and I’ll be back the week after that. In the meantime, keep your nose clean, your feel wiped, your teeth brushed, your hands washed, and your faced covered while you socially distance. And, if anyone asked if you’ve heard anything good lately, please do not hesitate to pass the Succotash.

Succotash shut-In Epi244: Honorin' Women with Clips

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. I am your host this week on Succotash Shut-In, The Soundcast Stimulus Package, Epi244. How are you all doing? It's the second week of March, 2021, and according to the news and late-night TV talkshow hosts we here in America have been in the thick of COVID-19 for an entire year now. The virus was actually here earlier than that, but the lockdowns started in March…so cheers to those of you who cared enough to mask up and play it safe to avoid that very real bit of science called asymptomatic spread. Thank you for taking the danger seriously.

I only wish everybody had but…um…humans. That's all, just "Humans"…that says it all. Some of them are very stubborn, some of them are very dumb, and some of them are responsible for killing your loved ones. I feel like there should be accountability for that, but no one is asking me.

In case you missed Episode #243, it was hosted by show creator Marc Hershon and featured clips from Chillpak Hollywood Hour, Screams & Moans, Waking from the American Dream, and the 4 Corners Podcast. You can still listen to it at Spotify, Stitcher, Apple or Google Podcasts, the Laughable app, iHeart Radio, YouTube, or even on our own homesite — http://SuccotashShow.com

But again, this is show #244 and I've got clips for you from the soundcasts Mayim Bialik's Breakdown with Mayim Bialik, Humboldt Holding Up, and Behind the Bastards. There is a sort of theme to this episode…and maybe you can figure out more-or-less what that is before the show is over. This installment is sponsored by Henderson's "Hooray for Hollywood!" Slacks.

THE CLIPS

Mayim Bialik's Breakdow‪n‬
A quirky, informative, and interactive podcast, Mayim Bialik's Breakdow‪n‬ breaks down the myths and misunderstandings about mental health and emotional well-being. Actress, Producer, and neuroscientist Mayim Bialik combines her academic background with vast personal experience to provide listeners with valuable practical advice focusing on removing the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraging an understanding of the mind-body connection. Nothing is off limits as Mayim breaks it down with an amazing collection of guests. Our featured clip is from the March 9th, 2021, episode "Personal Truth, Transformation, and Managing Anxiety" with guest Glennon Doyl‪e‬.

Humboldt Holding U‪p‬
LoCO has a podcast! They check in with Humboldt folk in this odd post-COVID world and you can too! New episodes most weeks, they figure. Our clip hails from January 31st, 2021, and is entitled "Performance Artist Noël August on Adapting Club Triangle, Her Alter Ego Tucker Noir, Pandemic Momming, and Working on That Jason Segel Movi‪e". It's namely LoCO catching up with Noël August/Tucker Noir on all of her pandemic pursuits.

HOST NOTE: I would like to add that although the show description refers to being "in this odd post-COVID world" and currently, as of March 13th, 2021 we are not "Post" in the sense that it is over, but in the sense that it is after COVID-19 began…if anything, we are mid-COVID because we are still very much during-COVID…I do appreciate the bright future the show description brings to mind. Cheers! TS

Behind the Bastard‪s‬
There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist. Our harvested clip is quite recent, from March 9th, 2021 - Part One: The Rush Limbaugh Episodes with Paul F. Tompkin‪s‬

Host Robert Evans is joined by Paul F. Tompkins to discuss the late Rush Limbaugh.

And here we are together again at the end my friends. Some of you have already guessed tonight's more-or-less theme. March is Women's history month, which you can learn more about by going to  https://www.womenshistory.org/womens-history/womens-history-month

Also, March 8th was International Women's Day which you can learn more about by going to the very same website.

So, that about all I have to say. I was going to try to write a bit about doing a mic-drop but it really didn't deserve to exist outside of my head. Also, while I am technically speaking into a microphone, it is part of a recording device that I really don't want to damage. That's just true. Tune in next week for Epi245 hosted by Marc Hershon and you'll hear from me next the following week…Until then, be decent to each other, stay safe, avoid the maskless like a literal plague until you have been vaccinated and then after that pay attention to the post-vaccination guidelines, and we'll get thru this together. If you liked the show, tell others about us and where to find us if they show the appropriate level of interest. It's more-or-less what we mean when we gently suggest you please pass the Succotash.

Succotash Shut-In Epi243: Soundcastin' Friends

Hello, friend-o! Marc Hershon here to host Epi243 of Succotash Shut-In, The Soundcast Stimulus Package. By the look of things – fingers cross, masks still on, and socially distanced yet – things in the US of A are sort of showing signs of getting…dare I say it…post-pandemic-ready. Maybe. Who knows? People were burning their masks in Idaho in some bizarre “freedom ritual”. Very reminiscent of the exact same activity that happened right here in San Francisco around 1918 when they thought the Spanish Flu was tapering off. That didn’t go so well and things actually got worse. But we’ll hope for the best and you never know – maybe mask smoke will be as effective as the scientifically developed vaccines in knocking this thing down.

My main point of bringing up the current state of affair is that, as the pandemic eases, me and my every-other-weekly co-host Tyson Saner maybe restoring this soundcast to some semblance of normal. As you may know, the 10th anniversary of this show is just a month away, in April, and if we feel the spirit move us, we’re likely to restoring the original title of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. Although, actually the REAL original title was Succotash, the Comedy PODCAST PODCAST. But we ditched the P-word for the “soundcast” moniker a couple of years in and that’s who we are.

If you have anything to say on the matter, whether it’s about our decade-o-versary or the impending title change, you can write  us at either m-a-r-c@succotashshow.com or t-y-s-o-n@succotashshow.com. Or hit us up on the socials. Or call our toll-full warm line at (818) 921-7212 and leave us a message.

Speaking of Tyson, if you missed his most recent installment, Epi242, never fear! It featured clips from the Valley Boys Podcast, The Dinner Party Download, and The Record Store Day Podcast. Hooray! You can still catch up at Spotify, Stitcher, Apple or Google Podcasts, the Laughable app, iHeart Radio, YouTube, or even on our own damn homesite — http://SuccotashShow.com

But let’s go ahead and get into “now” mode. As in what I have in store for you today, right here. I’m calling Episode 243 “Soundcastin’ Friends” and while, admittedly, we call a lot of soundcasters friends, I pulled out a quartet of clips from some of the ones that popped into mind recently because they either reached out or I heard them talking about me OR I’m actually in the clip. Yes, I’m THAT shallow. The shows in question are Chillpak Hollywood, Screams & Moans, Waking from the American Dream, and the 4 Corners Podcast. The last one actually features a friend of the show who is a guest on 4 Corners, but that’s a technicality.

In addition, this show is sponsored by the Massage-O-Pedic Trousers by Henderson’s Pants.

CLIPS

Chillpak Hollywood Hour
Okay, if you know our show then you know this show, the Chillpak Hollywood Hour, hosted by Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness. Listening to Chillpak was one of the inspirations for me to start up Succotash, and the guys were my first interview outside of Studio P. We even had a couple years run where we were trying to get a real old-fashioned feud going to try to get some press but that never came together. I was recently honored to be asked to be part of a little comedy roundtable on a two-part episode of the show, along with Dean and the thoughtful, insightful, and wickedly funny Suli McCullough. Phil was moderating and we talked about our comedy influences, how we got started performing, and a variety of other topics. In this clip we hit on improv, the San Francisco International Comedy Competition, and Suli’s high school specialty, the Dumb Joke of the Day.

4 Corners Podcast
East Coast comedian Lenny Marcus hosts the 4 Corners Podcast,  and runs a tight ship: 4 topics. 15 minutes per topic. A recent guest on the show was Barry Weintraub, a very funny political comedian and friend of mine for years. He was even my boss at one time, back when I was a stringer for his Comedy USA magazine. He’s been back in his native New York for along time now, was hosting the Schmoozecast out of the Comic Strip and, as I said, was just on 4 Corners where he and Lenny yakked about saving money and a little about comedian and former Succotash guest Ritch Shydner…

Screams & Moans
Okay, this is two soundcast friends at once, neither of who have I ever met face to face. The show is Screams & Moans, hosted by Megan Pentecost, who I only knew for years from her Twitter handle @PodcastWhore, but who was a very early listener to Succotash who went on to start her own jam, to which her logline is: “It's the podcast about movies and sex but not together because that would be porn.” She recently had Jason McNamara guesting, AKA “Jabs” from The Dhead Factor and Boganwood soundcasts. If that name’s familiar, Jabs was on THIS show not long ago, back in Epi213 “Doin’ It Down Under w/Jason McNamara”. And, just like me, Megan screwed up and forgot to hit record the first time around had to re-record the whole episode with Jabs a second time. I guess she picked up a thing or two listening to this show. In this clip, they’re talking about the movie Event Horizon.

Waking from the American Dream
The next clip has a little hair on it because the episode of Waking from the American Dream that I got it from dropped last November 2020. It was the most recent episode I could find. Hosted by yet another friend of this show, Kelly Carlin, it’s not exactly a comedy soundcast but Kelly is witty as hell as well as being smart and insightful as well. She’s been cooped up just like the rest of the intelligent folks for the past year and I love what she has to say here about her jigsaw puzzle experience…

That’s all I got for you this day, friend-o! Tyson Saner will be back in this same feed next week with Episode 244 and a batch of new soundcast clips. I plan to return the week after that with an interview instead of clips, but we’ll have to see if that comes together. It WON’T be Meghan Markle and Prince Harry and that’s all I’m going to say.

Until we meet again stay 6 feet out of trouble, wash those filthy mitts, mask that ugly mug, and if anyone asks if you’re heard anything good lately, won’t you please pass the Succotash?

Succotash Shut-In Epi242: Clippin' Towards Spring

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. I'm your every-other-week host of this program that is currently called Succotash Shut-In. Welcome to Episode 242. Last week on Epi241, "Crossin' The Pond", show creator and other every-other-week host Marc Hershon brought you a quartet of clips from soundcasts from England that we had not featured before. The shows clipped in question are Looks Familiar, CheapShow, Rule of Three, and The Adam Buxton Podcast. It's a fun episode and you can still find it at our homesite, http://SuccotashShow.com, as well as on Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, the Laughable app and wherever soundcasts are found and streamed and/or downloaded.

This show I've put together for you is comprised of a trio of clips from mostly places around the U.S.A. Our featured clips are from Valley Boys Podcast, The Dinner Party Download, and The Record Store Day Podcast. And if you're feeling a tad "kidnappy", this episode is sponsored by Henderson's Pants new Ransom Pants!

CLIPS

Valley Boys Podcas‪t‬
Two unlikely best friends, Dave Weasel and Brandon Collins, fight about everything. One is a cuckservative douchebag, the other a liberal comedian. Our clip is from February 4th, 2021, their Epi30 AKA "Dirty Thirt‪y‬", when the boys were discussing Dave's foiled plot to start an Only Fans scheme, Brandon argues his prostitute habit over dating, Kim Jeong Newsom, and Biden's first two weeks.

The Dinner Party Downloa‪d‬
The Dinner Party Download is a fast and funny hour of culture, food and conversation: “public radio’s arts & leisure section.” Their blurb tells us that, "In every episode you’ll learn a joke; bone up on an odd bit of history and then wash it down with a themed cocktail recipe; meet artists of note; have your burning etiquette questions answered; savor an emerging food trend; and hear your new favorite song. Plus, unconventional wisdom from hosts Rico Gagliano and Brendan Francis Newnam." OUr clip hails from Episode 269, featuring Mel Brooks, Greta Gerwig, and AC Newma‪n‬, originally broadcast back on September 5th, 2014.

The Record Store Day Podcast‬
From the people who created Record Store Day, The Record Store Day Podcast with Paul Myers is an informative, record store-centric interview show featuring conversations with great guests talking about records, record stores and experiences in the physical retail space. We feature a clip from just a couple of weeks ago that dropped February 22nd, with guests Michael Milosh of Rhye, Dana Gould, and David Swider of indie record store The End Of All Music‪‬.

We here at Succotash Shut-In have been dropping episodes of this sort of "Hey, here's some things you might want to listen to more of..." content in some form or another for almost 10 years now. Sometimes it is mind-boggling to think of how much cumulative content is stored ini the archives at www.succotashshow.com…so many shows clipped and folks spoken to at various points in their existences...which is a result of so much listening to other people speak, sometimes at great length, to find that "perfect" or "surely good enough" moment that we have decided to feature in the "tasting plate" or "Whitman's Sampler" aesthetic that is what this program has mostly been, when it hasn't been about chatting with some of soundcasting's most interesting personalities that is.

BTW, I don't think that I'm the king of run-on sentences but I'm at least peerage.

Next week, Marc Hershon will be your host for Episode 243 and he will have more for you to enjoy. So, until we meet again, please wash your hands, wear a mask in public, be respectful of each other's anxiety as best as you can, and if someone anywhere in the world including on Twitter or whatever social media platform you use to communicate with asks if you've heard any good or interesting podcasts lately…yes, they will probably say "podcasts" still if they haven't been listening to us…would you please, pass the Succotash?

Succotash Shut-In Epi241: Crossin' The Pond

Hello, dear listener. I’m Marc Hershon, your every-other-weekly host of this show. Happy to be back. Last week co-host Tyson Saner was in the hot seat with Succotash Shut-In Epi240, favoring your pearly shell-like ears with clips from such audio wonderments as What Had Happened Was, Oprah's Master Class, and The Al Franken Podcast. You can still catch that installment at our homesite, http://SuccotashShow.com, as well as from Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, the Laughable app and wherever diner soundcasts are streamed and/or downloaded.

Just last week - the past two weeks, actually - I was a guest on the Chillpak Hollywood Hour, with Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness, where, along with comedian and writer Suli McCullough, I participated in a comedy roundtable discussion. We talked about our comedy influences, the effect of the pandemic on live performance and the creative process, and more. Check it out when you can at their homesite: ChillpakHollywood.com, or wherever you grab your favorite soundcasts.

Back in July I did an episode focusing on some soundcasts that I called Doin’ It Down Under with Jason McNamara, and I tapped our old friend Jabs to find me a quartet of soundcasts from Australia and New Zealand. For this installment, Epi241, entitled Crossin’ The Pond, I leaned on another friend of the show, George Grimwood, to load us up with a four-pack of shows from England and he came through with flying colors. It’s not like we don’t occasionally feature British comedy soundcasts. We recently clipped From the Oasthouse with Alan Partridge, and Strange Times with our friend Davian Dent. But on tap today we’ve got four shows we’ve not featured before, including Looks Familiar, The CheapShow, Rule of Three, and The Adam Buxton Podcast. This episode is sponsored by Henderson’s Pants new Camo Cut-Offs.

Let me wax on about George Grimwood for a moment. We met via the socials back in the early 20-teens and then crossed paths in real life at, I believe, the third Los Angeles Podcast Festival. You can hear a short chat I had with him while we were hovering in the lobby area back exactly a hundred episodes ago, in Succotash Episode 141. George runs the Podnose Network that carries a number of soundcast over in England which he points out is “the UK’s leading independent entertainment podcast network,” with thousands of hours of content and more on the way. He himself is rebooting the show he hosts, called The Talk Show Talk Show (no relation to Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast…), in which he analyses classic (and not-so-classic) episodes of Late Night talk shows, including Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, and more.

So George not only suggested the shows we’re clipping today (I actually harvest them myself), but gave me little blurbs about each show which is a tremendous help. Thanks, George!

Without further ado, let’s get into this collection of English clips. (Do you think they call snippets crisps over there?)

Looks Unfamiliar
Our first show, Looks Unfamiliar, features journalist and writer Tim Worthington speaking with a guest about lost nostalgia - aspects of pop culture that have been discarded and forgotten in time, but often remembered fondly or with fear by the guest. Our clip is from recent episode 73 with director Matt Lee, and they’re talking about this service that used to exist called Dial-A-Song, where you could call a number on your phone and hear music played on your phone.

CheapShow
The CheapShow is a soundcast featuring Paul Gannon and Eli Silverman searching for bizarre treasures one may find in the Poundlands – which is a chain of British variety stores – I think it must be like our Dollar Stores here in the US, as well as bargain bins and charity shops, often culminating in some very unusual discoveries and hilarious segments. Our clip has the two lads reading a submission from a listener about a very strange find. Spoiler alert: It’s a turd.

Rule Of Three
This next soundcast, Rule of Three, was the winner of the best Arts and Culture division at last year’s British Podcasts Awards…and then promptly went on hiatus. But comedy writers Jason Hazeley and Joel Morris are coming back for more, according to our man George. And good thing, too – this is a super show! The hosts talk to comedians about something funny that they love. Guests pick whatever it is that makes them laugh — a book, a film, a tv show, a comic, a radio show, anything — and then the hosts and guest dig in. Our clip features a guest that I wish was a friend of Succotash, Eddie Izzard. He’s funny, and smart, and the thing he picked to highlight on the show was John Lithgow, specifically from his appearance on TV’s 3rd Rock from The Sun.

The Adam Buxton Show
The Adam Buxton Show is an interview show, or a “chat show” as they say across the Atlantic. Adam was originally part of Adam & Joe, a thoroughly enjoyable cult television series he did with Joe Cornish. They then became radio personas and, while Joe has been busy directing films, Adam has been podcasting. And writing, too — he recently released a memoir entitled Ramble Book. Our final clip of this episode features Adam’s “Ramble” with Canadian comedian Tony Law, where they share their experiences of being a stranger in a strange land – Disneyland.

That’s a wrap on our listen to a few shows from Across the Pond. I realize that some of those accents from the British Isles might be a bit think for some of our US listeners, so I’ll advise you do what I do – listen again. It’s the King’s English, people! You’re bound to pick it up.

Thanks once again to George Grimwood of the Podnose Network. If you want to reach out to him, you can email him at podnose@gmail.com. He tells me that they are looking to expand beyond the UK content next year. Who knows? Maybe Succotash can finally get our network stripes! I would love to authentically be able to say, “We’re getting the sign from the network to wrap it up…”

Until then, we’re just going to have to wrap it up ourselves. Remember that Tyson will be here next week with another bouquet of soundcasts clips for you. And I’ll be back the week after with something nice for your ears.

Until that time, stay safe, keep warm, wear a mask, wash your hands and if anyone asks if you’ve heard anything good lately, won’t you please pass the Succotash?

Succotash Shut-In Epi240: Gettin' Serious

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. I am your host for this week here on Succotash Shut-In, the Soundcast Stimulas Package Epi240.

In case you missed it, last week on Epi239, "Drollplayin' with Gamecasts", my co-host and your every-other-show host Marc Hershon harvested four clips having the common theme of roleplaying games from the soundcasts The Adventure Zone, AllD20, Critical Role, and Nerd Poker. It's a fun show and I urge you to check it out if you've a mind to. It can be found via Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, the Laughable app, iHeart Radio or even at our homesite, SuccotashShow.com .

This week I've got clips from the soundcasts What Had Happened Was, Oprah's Master Class, and The Al Franken Podcast. I've also got a throwback Henderson's Pants ad from way back in Epi200 for their Bicentennial Pants to round out the whole experience.

I haven't really got a whole lot more to say on the subject except thank you for listening so far, I hope you enjoy this episode's offerings. Let's get going!

CLIPS

What Had Happened Wa‪s‬
Open Mike Eagle sits down with the legendary Prince Paul to discuss Prince Paul's life, impact, and role in the world of Hip Hop. Our clip comes from the episode from July 8th, 2020, entitled "3ft High and Rising: The Origins of De La Sou‪l‬". Prince Paul tells the story of producing De La Soul's first album. Along the way we hear how the group was formed, the creative direction behind the album, and how they fit into the burgeoning hip-hop community around them. From the invention of the 'skit' to the first major sampling lawsuit, it's the story of an album that changed the business of rap music forever.  (On a personal note, I owned a copy of the album when it was pretty new and I was in high school. It's one of my all-time-favorite albums and I don't think very many if any of my peers at the time had ever listened to it or had even heard of it. I made sure a few of them would over time. I enjoy sharing music with people even more than listening to in or making it.)

Oprah’s Master Class: The Podcas‪t‬
Hear the greatest life lessons of some of the most respected and renowned actors, musicians, public figures and athletes. Handpicked by Oprah Winfrey, these luminaries reveal their lives with candor and insight — in their own words. We're featuring a clip from December 19, 2018, part of the conversation with the late, great Cicely Tyso‪n‬, who passed away on January 28, 2021. (Yet another personal note: When I was fairly young I was introduced to The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman which also starred Cicely Tyson and is for some reason absent from the episode description. When I saw that movie I learned what racism was. I came to understand that the multi-racial neighborhood portrayed on Sesame Street was not impossible but also not necessarily the norm. I still appreciate the idea of it. Also, there SHOULD be friendly puppets and people breaking out in song in our everyday lives, in my humble opinion…)

The Al Franken Podcas‪t‬
A five-time Emmy winning SNL comedy writer/producer, joins a four-time #1 NYT bestselling author, a three-time highest-rated national progressive radio host, a two-time Grammy winning artist, and a former US Senator. So, it gets a little crowded in the booth when Al Franken talks public policy and sometimes political comedy with notable guests. Our clip hails from September 29th of 2019, repeating a portion of Al's convo with Chris Rock "Because It's So Damn Great‪!", says the host. (ANOTHER personal note: First of all, I did not find out until recently that Mr. Franken HAD a podcast or I certainly would have been listening to it and would have clipped it already. Second, Saturday Night Live had been a huge influence on my life and sense of humor up until around the early-mid 1990's and then I pretty much stopped watching TV regularly. I'd say I missed a lot of great television programming but…did I really? …I certainly missed SOME…priorities change it seems. Anyway, Al Franken and Chris Rock are definitely 2 of my favorite personalities from that show which I am almost 2 years older than…and I really enjoyed the chance to hear them chat as friends.)

That's the lineup of clips for this week. Remember, Marc will be back as host next week in Epi241 with who knows what? Well…YOU know what if you've been listening for a while. It could be clips, it could be a chat…It could be both, really.

We'd both appreciate it if you liked what you heard here and decided to listen to more of us and more of other soundcasts and soundcasters we feature on this soundcast so that you can hear what else is out there and then you take it from there I guess…

It's February 13th, 2021 as I record this and I gotta say…as far as upsetting days go, this one is right up there with January 6th, 2021.…But it's Valentines Day tomorrow, and…well, that's different for everyone so I don't really know what to say about it…It's dead in the middle of this perfect month that begins on a Monday, ends on a Sunday and is 28 days long. I feel like these are infrequent. So, in this most special of months why not take a moment to rate and review us on whichever service you listen to soundcasts on, assuming that that service also provides you the opportunity to do so? We'd really appreciate it. It's what we mean when we ask you to please pass the Succotash…
